Re: "Use The Search!"

In theory there is no need to even correct someone. If people would not post on their boards then their boards will vanish and the person wil be forced to figure out why nobody is posting on their boad.

The problem is, some people are very slow learners. We don't want the boards clogged up with 100 new threads a day about a questions that were answered yesterday.

Re: "Use The Search!"

If you let threads quickly die then there is no threat of the boards being clogged, it is much more likely for clogging when bad boards get bumped repeatedly

Re: "Use The Search!"

Letting the thread die is one option, but I agree with many of the vets in their opinion that the new members need to be corrected. Maybe "educated" is an even better word. If we want heroscapers.com to continue to be a sleek, streamlined, navigable source of information, the new members need to be shown the ropes.

But in no way is it necessary to berate those new members who make innocent mistakes out of simple ignorance. I was a recipient of that type of insult, and I'm sick of seeing it elsewhere.

And again, because it's worth repeating: it's only a small number of veterans guilty of this snide behavior. But it's giving the rest of the site a bad rep.

Re: "Use The Search!"

On the front of the heroscape box it says "ages 8 and up".

So the "newb" that someone is being rude too, could potentially be a young kid.

I agree whole-heartedly that members of the site, young kid or not, should be corrected and taught how to use a forum correctly. But this can be done in a polite manner.

Instead of:

have:spoiler tags

want: people to use them

you could say

"Hi there so and so, welcome to heroscapers, I just wanted to let you know we have these things called spoiler tags to make things easier, Please "use the search" to learn how to use them.
Or
here is the link to how they work <insert link here>

You too can be part of Heroscapers welcoming party.

Even if you only have 6-7 posts feel free to link to other threads or explain how to use common functions like spoilers or quotes. You can even follow around older posters and add corrections to their posts to make them seem nicer by quoting them and adding the nice corrections in underline.

Also feel free to send an apology on behalf of the offending person explaining that not all heroscapers are like that, and that given time they will meet nice scapers like Revdyer, Jexik, 1Mmrig and many others who are always happy to lend a helping hand, not to mention all the nice Admins that keep the site running.

We were all new once.
