RIP Sir Thomas Sean Connery
Once in NYC's Central Park in my twenties (probably in the late Seventies) I was wearing on of those soft British houndstooth cloth caps on a walk in the Fall, and noticed an older fellow also wearing one, just standing there taking in the scenery. Upon looking at him more closely, I realized, although he wasn't particularly tall, that he looked just like Sean Connery. He saw me regard him a moment more than would be usual, but then I just nodded in a typical polite European fashion (my grandfather was English), and he nodded back.
Moving on through the nearest tree line, I came upon a movie set with a beautiful blonde actress being made up in a chair between takes, and realized for sure that it had been him. Later on I saw the movie poster on the non James Bond spy type movie they'd been making, and recognized the actress I'd seen on it, although I couldn't tell you her name today nor the name of the picture.
The first time I saw him in a film was in his 1959 young lead role in the Disney Irish myth flic Darby O'Gill and the Little People. I was a kid back then. I acquired it many years later on DVD. He also played an Irishman in The Longest Day, back when a child got into the theater for 50 cents. Since then I've enjoyed him in many other films. Ninety when he passed on, he will always be a treasure we can sit back and enjoy.
