Even though I admire and respect Mr. Asimov writing's I think that Heroscape owes more to Tolkien than to him. This might be debatable however since 'scape does have science fiction elements. However, I do not think that the robots in 'scape are based on his "I Robot" series or any of his other books while Orcs definitely come from the Professor. Non-the-less I will wish the late, great Mr. Asimov a happy belated b'day.

Good points Theats! And I'm still calling that "short viking" a (norse) dwarf.

ZODGILLA! Woo who?
Simply the best.

Tolkien is one of my heroes. The man was a genius. He completely and utterly changed my life, and set the bar so very high for fantasy writers. The innocence, bravery, and nobility of his characters always leaves a lump in my throat.

BILBO
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then I cannot say.

FRODO
Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the sun.

Blessed be the storytellers.

ZODGILLA!
Not bad monster.
(Ten foot tall and bulletproof.)

I don't know who I prefer, Tolkien or Asimov. However, Asimov has inspired some great poetry, while Tolkien inspire Fantasy novel elve crap.

A Letter from Isaac Asimov to His Wife Janet,
Written On His Deathbed

One night, studying an egg tray in my kitchen, that first novel
fell together in my mind: apes blowing blood into the air, the robot
nymphs dipping their slender metal legs into an ammonia brook.

I began those flights from Earth in plywood space capsules,
fleeing to a place Satan could not find. That was my hope. Getting
away from the chain letters, fever, rats, and unemployment, away
from the dark uncles that strayed over the glove, cutting brake lines
and loosening screws.

And as a Jew i asked myself what good are hidden things, and as
a Jew I admonished myself for asking. I knew that the best things
were hidden, and all of this was said in a private voice, a cousin to the
one I used to speak to pets.

I am writing this under the illumination of an old American
stereo. For once I donít want to know the weather forecast. In fact,
I canít bear to hear it. The jealousy would kill me before midnight.
Perhaps they will make jokes at Doubleday tomorrow.
I can imagine an intern asking, ďWhat were his last ten thousand
words . . .Ē

I want to know too. From my sickbed Iíve seen cellophane rams
shimmering in the yard and cardinals that look like quarts of blood
balanced in the branches. The doctor calls them apparitions.
Perhaps my last words will be random.

I am so drowsy, here listening to the wild dressage of a housefly,
thinking about the loyal robots in my paperbacks. Thinking about
the little chalet I would have built for you on Neptune.

A Neptune indiscernible from Vermont.

Re: Happy Birthday Professor Tolkien! 1/3/07

Today (January 3rd) is J. R. R. Tolkien's Birthday. He would have been 126 this year. I vividly recall reading "The Lord of the Rings" in the summer of '76. No work of literature before or since has effected my life as much. So, in honor of his birthday, I'd like to raise a toast and simply say: "To the Professor!"

Re: Happy Birthday Professor Tolkien! 1/3/07

It wasn't quite '76 when I first read it (more like '84). Nevertheless, "TO THE PROFESSOR!"

Re: Happy Birthday Professor Tolkien! 1/3/07

It's been fourteen years since I first tried to read the Lord of the Rings, and gave up (I was a precocious first grader, but not that precocious). It's been eight since I finished them, and my life hasn't been the same since.

"To the Professor!"
