What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Friend of mine got this game for Christmas, so we gave it a spin yesterday.



Ended up playing 3 games of it and everyone seemed to be into it. Turns go pretty quick once you learn how to play and one game might consist of 25 turns or so. We averaged about 1.5 hours per game. Goal is to build a city with 7 buildings in it. Once one player builds their 7th building, that becomes the final round of the game and everyone who hasn't already gone can still make moves. Then each player scores their city, player with the highest score wins. You can technically still win without reaching the 7 building goal if the buildings you built score more points for you that everyone else. You do get a bonus for finishing your city first, having a mixture of different types of buildings (5 types in total), and from special powers on cards.

Lots of replay potential due to the many alternate cards to choose from. Their are 8 or 9 different roles used each game, and each role has 3 different classes with different powers to choose from, so you can mix and match different role/class combos each game. Then their are a bunch of unique building cards, of which you only use 14 of each game along side the 54 common building cards. The unique buildings have special powers you can use once they are built, so the building options can change up from game to game as well.

I suspect this is a game we will play more going forward. Not much set up time required or table space needed to play. Now that everyone is more comfortable and familiar with the rules, the different character powers, and developed some game strategies, the games should go a little quicker too I would think.

I haven't played Citadels in a long time, but I remember liking it.

Christmas included Fox in the Forest and expansions for X-Wing, 7 Wonders, 7 Wonders Duel, and Eldritch Horror. Plus promos for Parks, Fog of Love, and Codenames. Eldritch Horror has already seen play, hopefully the rest will soon follow!

Got in a boatload of exploding kittens in today with my wife, daughter, and brother. Along with another one called 5 second rule. I’ll have to say exploding kittens looks incredibly dumb by looking at the box but is so much fun. I made a custom deck using a handful of cards of our choosing from the expansions. 5 second rule are both fun and quick games that can be played by most ages. I also got in a game of an The Office, trivia boardgame. I was surprised I didn’t win even though I’ve watched the show 12 times through the entire series. Fun stuff. I’ve been hard pressed to get any mini board games to the table lately. Planning on getting Star Wars legion to the table this week to teach my one brother and two nephews how to play.

Exploding Kittens is simply a game of joy.

Just played my first round of Gloomhaven tonight, was a lot to wrap my brain around in one go and setup took awhile, but it'll probably be more rewarding the deeper we delve.

Also played The Quiet Year over discord a few days ago, which is a game that I now love and highly recommend.

Gloomhaven is awesome. The leveling is one of the best parts, though, and that of course takes place over time. What characters are you playing as?

Why the Scoundrel of course
It's me, a Tinkerer, and a Spell weaver.
We had to restart the first scenario and play carefully since we were new and I died first round since we have no damage soak.

Scoundrel is pretty cool. I think the Spell Weaver is my favorite of that set.

I won a 4-player game of Above and Below. Then we played Azul. We topped the night off with Spirit Island with some of the expansion material. We beat the game.

Here in NYC we're back to staying in semi isolation, so I'm solitairing the many modes and expansions of my new giant Awakened Realms Kickstarter The Great Wall. I just got this after a two year wait! So far I've done Competitive, Cooperative, and the two biggest expansions, Gengis Khan and Black Powder (plus the Iron Dragon).

My regular opponent and I are also solitairing Undaunted North Africa weekly on TTS after switching sides; after previously having gone through Undaunted Normandy with switching sides as well. I now have the physical games also, as well as the new Undaunted Reinforcements, which has additions to both games. They are just starting to put its new scenarios on TTS, so that will be next for us. Undaunted Stalingrad has just been announced for December 2022.

Today my last of six PrePandemic Kickstarters is finally due for delivery. Its Hellenica: Story of Greece Leaders and Legends Expansion, with the Game Mat. This is the first game mat I every bought; I've gotten a few others as gifts from Taeblewalker. The mounted board gets crowded with all the 3D building and mini types.

I bought and played just a little of Brian Boru before Omicron hit; its a great game with simple rules. The last I heard the first printing was pretty much sold out.

Got in an epic game of Star Wars legion with my brother. MVP was Han Solo. He took 45 hits from my units with white dice saves and didn’t die. The bulk of those being concentrated fire from one of my ATST walkers. Han and Chewie, Cassian and K2S0 were the stars . All his other forces were obliterated by my Imperial Army but with those heroes that just wouldn’t die, won him the game 6-5 victory points. I poured tons of hits into Cassian as well. He fell after three full rounds of barrages from my second ATST. Blows me away how lucky my brother always is on dice rolls. I need to take him to the casino one day.
