Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

I think Settlers has some flaws that are too frustrating for playing too often, but I enjoy playing it now and then. My wife and her family still like it. One of the major pros that Catan has over one of my favorite games, Dominion, is that the player interaction level is fairly high.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

The table-top gamers part of our local gaming group had a X-Wing tournament yesterday. I borrowed an army & participated. I had a lot of fun. The army I was running was:
X-Wing: Wedge Antilles - Outmaneuver, Shield Upgrade, R5-P9
E-Wing: Corran Horn - Predator, Shield Upgrade, R2-D2
A-Wing: Prototype Pilot - Chaardaan Refit

Sadly I came 8th-out-of-9 . There were 4 rounds & a knockout semi-final & final rounds scored on points destroyed. The first round I didn't destroyed any of my opponents ships but he only got Wedge. Next I lost the A-Wing & took out a Z-95. Then I had the bye. Last game I won only losing my A-Wing.

While the finals were happening some of played King of New York. Lots of fun. Similar to King of Tokyo but has few more elements that make think a little more.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Board game day today! I always look forward to heading to the monthly board game day at my local game store. I ended up getting a few games in this time around.

First up was a 3 player game of Ticket to Ride that I ended up winning. One of the players was probably around 8 years old so I was holding back a bit and we were helping her here and there, although she ended up doing quite well and wasn't all that far behind me at the end of the game. That game is pretty much always lax and pleasant, but 3 player games are especially easy going with pretty minimal chances of fighting other players for routes and getting blocked.

The next game was a 2 player run of Contagion, the Pandemic-themed game where you play the diseases trying to wipe out humanity. The person who brought the game had just gotten the it so we were still flipping through the rulebook as we went along. We had to correct ourselves on a few points as we went along but I didn't feel like there was much of a game there, at least not with 2 players. The game limits you on actions and on the cards you have to perform them, so I just spent the early game making sure I was able to get as many cards as possible and then just funneling that advantage to have the lead for the rest of the game. I'd hope some of the gameplay could be a little tighter with more players as you fight to wipe out cities.

I next jumped over to a quick 2 player game of Love Letter. It's a game that I really like that is fun and quick, but I had some rotten luck. I made probably one incorrect play and went 0-7 in the match. More than half the games I lost first turn without being able to do anything, but that's more of a risk for 2 players and the game is still light and fast enough that I don't mind.

Lastly we launched into a game of Galactic Strike Force. Like Contagion, the person who had brought the game had never played before. He ended up overseeing a 4 player game where he was scanning the rules and helped us run the game. I am told it was quite a bit like Sentinels of the Multiverse as it was made by the same people. The early game was pretty difficult as we were overwhelmed by enemy ships and took some getting used to how exactly shields and damage work. We ended up moving most of the enemy ships over to one sector and basically ignoring them. As the game went on, enough of the players upgraded enough to take begin wracking up kills and completely shirking off damage of enemies until we just rolled over the final boss.

In all, I didn't love the game that much. It seems to have a pretty cascading effect of playing. Once you start getting good upgrades going and build your ship up enough, things get pretty easy. If you start out a little weaker, things can snow ball and run out of hand where you are just too weak to accomplish much of anything. Apart from that, each and every card (and there are a ton of them) have little rules governing how they change and affect the game. Some are more one-shot-effects that you can then ignore but there is a lot of cross-referencing and different things to resolve that can grind the game down a bit. I'd be willing to try it again (I have a pretty low bar for games that I'm willing to play with people, even games that I hate) but it didn't give me a great first impression.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Monopoly? Isn't that the game where everyone played by different house rules growing up and you argue as you go over which ones should be implemented while at least one person loses interest and is in the kitchen, two people are talking sports, the banker is screwing up the monetary transactions and the person perceived as the "best player" is routinely screwed over by all their friends who see this as a perfect opportunity to get back some of their own as the hours crawl by past midnight and the last two or three people finally just agree that someone won because they're jealous from looking over at the people who already lost getting in their third game of Summoner Wars?

No! You start the game with $100 on Free Parking then you add all the taxes and fines to the pot.

. . . and then you go to the liquor cabinet and fix yourself a martini to enjoy, while others play the game. Here's the trick:

When the first guy gets eliminated from Monopoly, play a round or two of Summoner Wars, as Aldin suggested. When the second guy gets eliminated, you can move on to Love Letter or (if you have it) Sheriff of Nottingham, which is an excellent game. Both are quick; you can switch back and forth, depending. Or, given slightly more time (you'll have to estimate), King of Tokyo or your deckbuilder of choice. Or if the remaining two players in Monopoly are closely matched, you can just play Power Grid.

The main thing is, fix yourself a martini while you wait for the first castoff from Monopoly. Perhaps you can solo Dungeon Roll while you mark time.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

The story about Monopoly I tell goes way back to my college years:

I. Three of us guys needed an extra Monopoly player or two, so we rounded up a couple of girl friends who were not so inclined, saying it was too competitive. Three hours later the rest of us had been eliminated, and the two women each owned half the board. It took another hour to get them to quit and call it a draw.

II. During the game, noticing an item I'd never seen on a pizza takeout menu before, I suggested it--tuna fish-- on the pizza we were ordering as one of several other items we'd agreed on. They all acted disgusted, but unbeknowst to them, I ordered it anyway. After tasting it, everyone agreed it was a particularly delicious pizza, although they couldn't tell what was different. Naturally I enjoyed watching their faces when I told them.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Tuna fish pizza does sound disgusting.

I'd be happy if I never played Monopoly again. Settlers of Catan is okay, but if you add in Cities and Knights expansion it becomes a pretty good game. There's enough depth with the different paths that it makes it interesting.

Played Cities and Knights once. Never again. Still love Settlers though.

Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide shot selection!

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Hey, leave the Monopoly bashing to BGG - they've got it to a science over there.

Personally I still enjoy Monopoly because I still enjoy what the heart of the game really is - knowing the other players.

I'll happily sit down to a game of Monopoly or a game of Dominant Species. Games are fun largely because of the who, not the what.

Though I do tend to pick other things over Monopoly - no sense in denying that certain things are more my style, but it also feels disingenuous to say that I hate it, when I don't, even though it's been years since I've played it.

I guess I think of it like candy. I loved certain kinds of candy as a kid, but as I grew up there were so many new things to try and so many of those things that I now like better. But that never killed my enjoyment of the things of my childhood, it merely gave me perspective. I'll still eat those little hard candies with the strawberry jam in the center, I just usually choose something else nowadays.

Eh. I never, ever liked Monopoly. I'm not trying to make an art out of shooting a fish in a barrel, because it can't be done. But why shouldn't I entertain myself at Monopoly's expense? You like it, you should play it.
