Poll: Painting Water Tiles Black/Red/Green - Yay or Nay?

I was considering spray painting some of my extra water tiles black, red, and green for shadow, lava, and swamp (respectively). I am curious about other people's opinions on this. Why or why not?

Significantly cheaper than buying the official versions!!

I think I’ve seen people say that spraypainting terrain is a no no because the terrain has a hard time going together.

I recommend not doing this. You have a bigger chance at ruining your tiles. Ive ruined my share. If you do it anyway, try to use higher quality spray paint and dont spray too closely or too much. Especially avoid hitting the interlocking bits with as much as the tops. My advice. 3D print them with the same or similar colored filament.

Well this got out of hand... anyway, I think it's a good idea, buying the actual terrain pieces is too expensive.

Would recommend using a sealer as well.

Re: Poll: Painting Water Tiles Black/Red/Green - Yay or Nay?

It would only work with black, but you can use clothes dye. It's time consuming, and easy to make a mess, but you end up with tiles that are the same size as when they started, and they don't chip.

Get some black Rit Dye, a pot that you will never use for food again, and a slotted spoon (or similar) that you will never use for food again. Heat water to boiling in the pot, add dye, and then repeatedly dip the tiles in the hot dye solution. If they stay in too long they can warp from the heat. Do a bunch of brief dips and the water will turn black. I've done it and you can still see a little bit of blue on the bottom of the tiles, but otherwise they are almost identical to the shadow tiles from the D&D set.

My post was replied from experience in the matter. Ive got it to work later on but there is a good chance that your tiles wont interlock as easily. This puts more stress on them when putting them together and taking them apart making them break easier. The reason I would suggest using a high quality spraypaint in moderation is that it has a sealer built in rather than adding one on top of brushed on paint. I personally dont even play on tiles anymore at my place. I use my Gridless format in my signature, but still play the occasional game on tiles at tournaments.

Just paint the top and leave the edges as-is. Works great.
Problem is the water tiles crumbling.

If doing it this way you can still use spray paint if you connect all your water tiles together and spray them from above in a group. Ive done this as well at one point. Good call T.

Re: Poll: Painting Water Tiles Black/Red/Green - Yay or Nay?

Good tip, never done more than one at a time but linking them together before painting is a great idea.

Oh yeah, I was speaking to the gross spam posts that got deleted as "getting out of hand" and I haven't personally tried it but I would assume using spray paint in layers and adding a sealer would give the tile a nice look as well as protecting it.
