Map size essentially determines the amount of conflict in the game. It's pretty easy to shrink the map to make it a little more ruthless or expand it to make it more of a solitaire/min-max experience. My only concern with increasing the conflict is that a lot of the slow races might not get time to shine. Of course, they can often make do with less area, so it might work in their favor as well. Might have to give it a try.
