Are you kidding me? They are wonderful and brutally hard to find. I jealously guard mine and all the expansions. I've got hundreds of hours into them. I've actually been expecting whoever owns the rights to them to turn them into an iOS app because in a lot of ways, they're pre-computer game computer games. Tons of fun - play it as a campaign with a customized squad that gains experience and you will absolutely be crushed the first time you lose someone you've grown attached to. Couldn't recommend the game more highly!

Thanks, david and Aldin. I'll probably give it a try, since it's easier to play by myself than drive the approximatley hour and fifteen minute round trip to play with Zarovich and his group, even thought it's great fun to play with them. Looking online, Aldin, I don't see many more expansions to the game than I have; I got Ambush!, and the Purple Heart, Move Out!, and Silver Star expansions, along with Battle Hymn. The wikipedia entry only indicates that I'm missing the Open Fire! (tank warfare?) version, the Battle Hymn expansion Leatherneck, and the two-player Shell Shock version; does this sound about right?

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Today I'll be going back to Winter Wars, the Battle of the Bulge expansion for MEMOIR 44. i've played through the six regular scenarios; now its time for the four in the bREAKTHROUGH format. Rather than increase a standard game size by 300% for multiplayer games ("Overlord"), the Breakthrough format increases a regular game 30%, with a 30% larger board and special scenarios. The format is now complete with the new Breakthrough Command Card Deck (80 cards) included in Winter Wars..

Where the Overlord/Multiplayer format is fine for a gang (usually 4 per side), its a bit much for just two players (although I've done it). The Breakthrough Format is a super sized version that can be comfortable for two players. Instead of playing for about 6 Banners, for example, you're now playing for 9-11 in the larger format. The new cards allow you to sometimes activate some units as usual, but then also Move Out. This means you can move but not attack with additional units anywhere on the board, not limited to your specific sector specified on your card! Which makes the game move faster to get those additional units into the game--and in the upcoming scenario I set up last night, each side has 18 units, as opposed to say, 12 or so in regular format.

I've played Breakthrough scenarios before, and they suggested putting two regular command decks together. Now, however, it will be a slightly different experience. Also I'll be using the Winter Rules as well as the extra unit types featured in the expansion, as these Breakthroughs are Bulge games as well. That means throwing in the Winter Combat cards as well, which are similar to the Urban Combat Cards introduced for Stalingrad Overlord games earlier. The second deck is a counterpart in function to the Lore Deck in Battlelore and the Dragon Card Deck in the new Samurai Battles.

Meanwhihe I'm looking forward to the upcoming Memoir 44 Equipment Pack, which will have grey colored minis for almost all of the specialized units covered in the various game expansions over the years, and some, like British Funny Tanks (D-Day) which are brand new will have their own new scenarios as well. Once again, I prepare to be absorbed by the "Borg Collective." Richard Borg's Commands & Colors system, that is.

Sounds fun. I love this game, but I tend to play it online just because I play too many games that have longish setup times. Memoir is definitely better on the tabletop though. Have fun.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

This past weekend had some good gaming going on with my friend Jeff stealing everyone elses luck for Friday and Saturday. He dominated on Lords of Waterdeep with every quest he recieved including both his starting ones were the right type for his lord. Both times I tried to bury his warfare quests to find some that I needed, more of his quests came up. When he buried the current quests he recieved the types he was after....grrrrr.

Next he easily won a game of Merchants and Marauders on Saturday with a fast win of getting a glory point every time he came into port with cargo. He found three of a kind every time he bought cargo. Plus because of his starting captain, his sloop was able to hold three cargo. He kept the sloop through the entire game too. He then went on to win King of Tokyo easily enough and the dice were giving him exactly what he needed for additional victory points.

On Sunday I was about tired of his luck and I thought it would be a good day to play Mage Knight especially since luck plays a very small role. I came out on top and is still undefeated in Mage Knight at 7-0.

We've also played 4 more games of Descent 2nd Edition and currently the Heroes are 1-8. It seems the heroes need the hot dice in order to stand a chance against a decent played Overlord so far. Too many bad rolls for them and their sunk while the Overlord has cards that will allow him to reroll missed attacks or add damage to dice. The amount of damage dealt seems to far out weigh the amount of healing/defense dice in the game.

This looks good and on my watch list Ona. I hope it's nothing like Tooth & Nail, which I should be getting from Kickstarter sometime this month (I hope!).

Also can't wait for Police Precinct to come this month from KS (again, I hope!).

I just ordered D-Day Dice, so that should maybe be in by GenCon. I played it once this past Saturday and really liked it. A couple guys in my game group posted on Facebook to see if anyone wanted to add to their order to get the free shipping, so I said "sure" and asked them to order D-Day Dice for me. It's a lot different than I thought it would be as it's more of a resource management game and that's what the dice rolls are for. You gain Courage, Soldiers, Leadership and Tool resources and have to use them to gain specialist soldiers, tools and need to burn the courage to get to another part of the map and soldiers are always getting killed, so getting more of them is key too. So it's a balancing act of getting what you need to progress up the map and into the bunker. Pretty darn fun and in a relatively compact package

Has anyone tried the Dungeon Command games? I'm considering getting one or both, but to use them as add-on's to the Ravenloft and Ashardalon games. Are the extra tiles and cards worth it as a Ravenloft expansion?

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Played some Quarriors! today. Haven't played in ages since my cousin doesn't like it, so glad to get another play in with the neighbor.

Also played Munchkin Quest tonight. The game took 2 hours to finish, which it really shouldn't have. We forgot that you drew a new card every turn, so we just couldn't kill anything in the dungeon. Nonetheless, I absolutely love this game. It has a ton more depth and is loads more fun than regular Munchkin.

A few things to consider:

1. You have to split the game in two if you only buy one of them if you want to play with two players. It really plays better with one set per player.
2. The tiles, while they physically fit the Adventure Series games, aren'd designed for them, so you would have to live without many of the things that are printed on the AS tiles.

3. The cards allow you to use the minis in the AS games, so I can't help but see that as a good thing. All that being said though, I haven't tried combining anything into the AS games yet.

Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide shot selection!

Eclipse 2-player

War of the Ring I was the free peoples as I almost always am. My opponent decided to try to swarm me everywhere on the eastern front, and put three dice in the hunt box on the first turn. They brought the easterlings to war and mustered some groups with some good cards, and I tried moving the fellowship, but took a 1 damage and then hid them. I spent my other two dice moving Gondor and the elves closer to war. Next round, my opponent put another three dice in the hunt box, and I drew "Fear, Fire, Foes!", and decided to try for a military victory which I had never tried before. I separated Gimli from the fellowship, played "Fear, Fire, Foes!" moving Gimli to Bree and moving the North to War, mustering a leader in bree and a regular in the Shire and finally moving the elite in the north downs and the two regulars in the shire closer to Bree. Meanwhile, my opponent mustered the last of the southern groups, and moved the easterlings to war. Next round, I moved the group in Bree and the group near bee towards Moria while my opponent brought Mordor to war. I used a character die to move my army one space away from Moria while my opponent mustered an elite there. I used a character die to move my army into Moria and used "Charge" while my opponent used "Deadly Strife" I failed the charge. I then rolled enough to deal three hits, and my opponent whiffed. On the reroll, I got another hit and took out all of the troops in Moria before it even went to a siege. I used my last die to move the elves closer to war. I'm not quite sure what happened next turn, but on my opponent's turn, they attacked my army and I used "scouts" to escape to an empty Dol Guildor. We weren't quite sure that it was legal to do that, but it didn't matter, becuase it was there last die and I still had all three elven rings, so it didn't matter

To be fair though, was only our second game and I own most of the games we play, so I am more familiar with available cards and strategies.

But I can Jimmycard though...

I like it. It's no replacement for Scape, but it is a fun little tactical minis game. It has been said elsewhere that it feels like a mix of Magic: The Gathering and a minis game, and that is not entirely untrue. You can construct your decks (and you can buy additional decks and single minis from Auggies!), but you never know if, when you play your devastating attack card, your opponent will be able to prevent it.

Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide shot selection!
