Help from science people

I am doing an experiment where I gather Oxygen gas and Hydrogen gas in a pipet bulb in different ratios. The bulb can consist of 6 parts. After we've gathered the gas (using water displacement) we squeeze it out of the bulb into a lit match and see how to get the biggest pop. So far I know that Oxygen by itself is non combustible. I know that because we tried it and I know Oxygen just helps cause combustion. Later we will use our findings to design "rocket fuel" and see who can shoot theirs the farthest. So far my biggest pops have resulted from a 2:4 ratio on both ends. 2:4 Oxygen to Hydrogen and 4:2 Oxygen to Hydrogen. My teacher said there is a trick, so would anyone out there know what the best ratio might be? Keep in mind this is out of 6 parts.

It's been over 20 years but I'll take a crack at it.

To maximize your power, you need to burn all of your fuel (hydrogen). So you really need to know, how much hydrogen and oxygen in a part. You'll need two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atoms when you are burning. So by determining how many atoms of each in a part, you should be able to come up with the correct ratio. Assuming you will not get nice, round numbers, you'll want some more oxygen atoms available than hydrogen, to make sure you burn all the hydrogen available.

So I'd want 4 parts hydrogen 2 parts oxygen?

How many hydrogen molecules in a part?

How many oxygen molecules in a part?

No clue... However many are in one 6th of a pipette bulb... I can ask for an equation for that tomorrow to see if my teacher even knows...

H2O. 2 parts Hydrogen to 1 part Oxygen, or 4 and 2. There isn't any leftover reactants, and the reaction is incredibly fast. The number of atoms is the same unless the gases are at different temperatures and pressures. I can't remember the name of the law that states that. I want to say the Ideal Gas Law, but I'm not sure.

Yeah that's what my results were leaning towards. It was a loud quick pop which would be just the thing that would propel a rocket. A slower combustion wouldn't give it the distance it needs.
