An exciting end-of-final-exams game

This was a 3 on 3 team game with 5 of my students. (End of finals celebration game.)
We made a simple not-so-big board because we wanted a somewhat quick game and maybe get in two games.
It turned out to be a longish game mainly because there were so many strategic decisions to be made and that slowed down the game.
(Many probability calculations along the way )
This was one exciting and nerve-racking game. The game went back and forth.
There were some really lucky and some really unlucky rolls.

Here is the board:

It is a fairly flat board with embedded roads and a center raised arena with two gateways and ladders up to the top of the gateway;
various trees and ruins fill out the board. Here are closeups of the center arena.

The teams (3 on 3) (400 pts each player) were:
Team 1:
(A) Venoc Warlord, Venoc Vipers (x4), Elite Onyx Vipers, Dumatef.
(B) Krav Maga Agents, DeathStalkers (x3).
(C) Su-bak-na, Kee-mo-shi, Marro Warriors, Me-Burq-Sa.
Team2:
(D) Q9, Kaemon Awa, Warriors of Ashra (x2).
(E) Deathwalker 9000, Zettian Guards, Raelin, Guilty McCreech, Deathreavers (x2).
(F) Nilfheim, Airborne Elite, Shotgun Sullivan, Theracus.

Although the following two pictures are in the middle of the first round,
you see roughly where the units had started.

ROUND 1:
The Airborne Elite drop, two onto the top of the gates and two onto the arena, ready to run up to grenade the enemy.
The initiative rolls go: AECDFB. (Too bad for the AE.)
(1) The venoc vipers move and frenzy and kill 2 AE. The robo rats move up. The Marros kill another AE.
Q9 kills a viper on the Attack+1 glyph. The 1 remaining Airborne elite runs up a ladder and shoots dead a marro (revenge). Some Deathstalkers move up.
(2) More venoc vipers move up. no frenzy. The rats capture 2 glyphs. The marros shoot at the rats, kills 1 on the glyph,
but another just takes its place. Q9 kills another 2 vipers. The marros shoot at the last AE and Q9 (the latter from a ladder).
Theracus flies up, bringing a rat. The Krav Maga shoot at rats, they scatter some more.
[This is where the following picture is taken. Note the marro on the ladder and the AE on a ladder.]
(3) More venoc vipers move up. Raelin flies forward (prepping for DW advances). The marros kill the last AE and scatter some rats.
Q9 moves across and shoots at the Krav with 1 die at a time and manages to kill 1 Krav. The Deathstalkers attack Q9. No damage.

ROUND 2:
The initiative rolls go: FDCAEB
(1) Nilfheim moves up. Q9 moves to engage the marro on the ladder, killing it, and attacks adjacent deathstalker unsuccessfully.
The 2 marro warriors attack the rat from height disadvantage, because the robo rat is blocking the gate entrance. Another rat dies, but more scatter.
The deathstalkers attack Q9 but no damage. DW9K moves up and explosion attacks the 2 marros and 1 deathstalker (see their clustered formation
in above pic) and kills both marros! All marro warriors dead now (owner's remaining 2 turns will be skipped this round!). More venoc vipers move up, attack and kill robo rat. (Down to only 2 rats now.)
(2) Nilfheim flies up to top of gate and attacks deathstalkers, no success. Q9 is forced to only attack adjacent Deathstalkers, no success.
The vipers attack Q9, one damage. The vipers frenzy and attack Q9 again, 2 more wounds (2 skulls and no shields). Zettian guards move up and attack deathstalkers unsuccessfully. Deathstalkers kill off theone more robo rat.
(3) Nilfheim attacks deathstalkers and kills 2. Q9 kills off the adjacent vipers. The EOV move up, two attack Q9 no damage.
DW9K moves up to the arena, attacks but no damage. More deathstalkers move up, attack DW9K, but with 11 defense, no damage.

ROUND 3:
FIGURES LEFT
Team 1:
(A) Venoc Warlord, 3 Venoc Vipers, Elite Onyx Vipers, Dumatef.
(B) 2 Krav Maga Agents, 4 DeathStalkers.
(C) Su-bak-na, Kee-mo-shi, Me-Burq-Sa.
Team2:
(D) Q9 (3 wounds), Kaemon Awa, 6 Warriors of Ashra.
(E) Deathwalker 9000, Zettian Guards, Raelin, Guilty McCreech, 1 Deathreaver.
(F) Nilfheim, Shotgun Sullivan, Theracus.
It looks like Team 2 is winning... (but Q9 has 3 wounds though)

The initiative rolls go: EBDFAC
(1) The Zettian Guards move up, attack with no success. The deathstalkers attack the Zettian Guards (defense 9), with one successful MAUL!
Q9 attacks the adjacent EOV, but none are killed! Nilfheim attacks deathstalkers and EOV, no success.
[This is when the following picture was taken]
The EOV attack Q9, no damage. But they frenzy and attack Q9 again and kills Q9 Ouch! Kee-Mo-Shi moves up. Shotgun Sullivan moves up.
(2) DW9K does no damage. The deathstalkers attack the Zettian Guard and kills with MAUL again! The last robo rat is also killed.
Nilfheim attacks unsuccessfully the EOVs. The deathstalkers attack DW9K unsuccessfully. Kee-Mo-Shi moves adjacent to DW9K, fails the
mindshackle roll, and DW9K survives the regular attack too.
(3) DW9K attacks KMS rolling 3 skulls but KMS defends with 2 shields. Nifheim flies down to do his regular 6 att on KMS in an attempt
to take her out quickly before she can mindshackle anyone, but rolls 6 blanks. Ouch. The Deathstalkers hit Nilfheim for 2 wounds.
The EOV hit Raelin for 4 damage. KMS fails the mindshackle, but rolls 2 skulls on DW9K, and DW9K rolls only 1 shield out of 11 dice. OUCH! Bye Bye DW9K.
And Toxic Skin gives Nilfheim a 3rd wound.

ROUND 4:
FIGURES LEFT
Team 1:
(A) Venoc Warlord, 3 Venoc Vipers, Elite Onyx Vipers, Dumatef.
(B) 2 Krav Maga Agents, 4 DeathStalkers.
(C) Su-bak-na, Kee-mo-shi, Me-Burq-Sa.
Team2:
(D) Kaemon Awa, 6 Warriors of Ashra.
(E) Raelin (4 wounds), Guilty McCreech.
(F) Nilfheim (3 wounds), Shotgun Sullivan, Theracus.
It now looks like Team 1 is winning...

(1) Kaemon Awa moves up. Nilfheim ice attacks KMS and Deathstalker and EOV, kills 1 deathstalker and 1 EOV. The EOVs finish off Raelin.
Guilty McCreech moves up, takes pot shots at KMS, no luck. KMS fails the mind shackle on
attacks Nilfheim and rolls 3 skull and Nilfheim whiffs. Bye bye Nilfheim. The Deathstalker attacks Theracus, no hits.
(2) Kaemon gets close enough to do double attack on KMS, and kills KMS. The EOV and Deathstalker attack Theracus with height advantage,
trying to finishing him off. But Theracus lives. Guilty McCreech climbs onto the arena, takes unsuccessful pot shots.
(3) Kaemon Awa climbs onto arena, no success with attacks. One Deathstalkers attacks Kaemon with 1 wound.
The last EOV and a Deathstalker finish off Theracus. Guilty climgs up a ladder and takes pot shots at an EOV and one EOV whiffs on defense.

ROUND 5:
FIGURES LEFT
Team 1:
(A) 2 Venoc Vipers, 1 EOV, Venoc Warlord, Dumatef
(B) 2 Krav Maga Agents, 2 deathstalkers.
(C) Su-Bak-Na, Me-Burq-Sa.
Team2:
(D) Kaemon Awa (1 wound), 6 WoA
(E) Guilty McCreech.
(F) Shotgun Sullivan.
It looks like Team 1 is still winning...

(1) Shotgun Sullivan moves up, attacks DS unsuccessfully.
The 2 deathstalkers attack Kaemon, no wounds and 1 deathstalker is killed by COUNTERSTRIKE. Kaemon attacks unsuccessfully.
Guilty goes to the top of the gate and attacks unsuccessfully. Su-Bak-na moves up.
The EOV attacks Kaemon and is killed by COUNTERSTRIKE.
(2) Shotgun Sullivan can't quite reach the cluster of 2 Kravs and SBN to shotgun, so instead does a regular attack, but no damage.
The last Deathstalker attacks Kaemon and is killed by COUNTERSTRIKE. Kaemon moves to a strategic location (see following picture and
guess which hex it is)
and attacks Su-bak-na twice for only 1 wound (nice defense rolls). Su-Bak-na can only attack Kaemon from height
disadvantage, and rolls 2 skulls out of 7 only and Kaemon rolls 3 shields out of 5 for 1 COUNTERSTRIKE wound on Su-Bak-na.
The Venoc Warlord moves up.
(3) ShotgunSullivan moves up the ladder and attacks Venoc Warlord, no damage despite rolling 3 skulls!
The KM attack Kaemon, but no damage. Kaemon double attacks SBN and kills SBN. Ouch.
Guilty McCreech takes shots at Venoc Warlord, but no damage.

ROUND 6:
FIGURES LEFT
Team 1:
(A) 2 Venoc Vipers, Venoc Warlord, Dumatef
(B) 2 Krav Maga Agents
(C) Me-Burq-Sa.
Team2:
(D) Kaemon Awa (1 wound), 6 WoA
(E) Guilty McCreech.
(F) Shotgun Sullivan.
It now looks like Team 2 is slightly ahead.

(1) Me-Burq-Sa attempts paralyzing stare and fails and attacks Kaemon for no damage.
Krav spread out to attack Kaemon, no success. Kaemon charges one Krav and adjacent attacks the Krav and kills.
Venoc Warlord catches Shotgun Sullivan and does 1 damage.
Shotgun fires back and hits for 1 damage. Guilty double attacks the VW for another 1 damage.
(2) Me-Burq-Sa succeeds in paralyzing stare and rolls 3 skulls to exactly kill Kaemon.
The remaining 1 Krav get onto the arena and shoots at ShotgunSullivan for 1 more damage. VW attacks Shotgun for no damage.
Shotgun Sullivan takes a disengage (1 wound rolled) from VW to adjacent-attack the last Krav and kills.
(Team 2 thought that the ranged figures would be the most dangerous in the end game and that the WoA would be able to handle the non-ranged figures on Team 1.)
VW chases Shotgun and attacks [See picture below] and successfully kills Shotgun.
Guilty shoots twice at MBS, rolling blanks on first attack, but 3 skulls on second attack and MBS whiffs and dies.
(3) VW goes up ladder towards Guilty. Guilty moves to edge of ladder to prevent VW from getting even height; attacks VW for 1 damage.

ROUND 7:
FIGURES LEFT
Team 1:
(A) 2 Venoc Vipers
(B) Venoc Warlord (3 wounds)
(C) Dumatef
Team2:
(D) 6 WoA
(E) Guilty McCreech.
(F)
It now looks like Team 2 is ahead very slightly.

[Note that we house rule that at the end of a round, when one teammate is out of figures, another teammate may "donate" an army card.
Hence Team 1 has the 3 army cards spread out above. But note that VW no longer enhances the frenzy rolls of the vipers.]
(1) The vipers, Dumatef, WoA all advance. VW attacks Guilty, no damage. Guilty kills VW (3 skulls and no shields!) and then kills one viper.
(2) The WoA move to the edge of the gate. Dumatef attacks the WoA, killing one. Guilty kills last viper.
(3) The WoA attack Dumatef unsuccessfully. Dumatef kills another WoA. [See picture below]Guilty kills Dumatef. Game over.

Team 2 wins with Guilty and 4 WoA left on the board. (97 points)

[edited to include 2 more pics]

Wow, great battle report. It was well-written and fun to follow.

And since you are a Math Olympian, you probably didn't even need to take any notes to remember it all

You're right, I didn't take notes. Although I did have trouble remember the exact initiative rolls in the later rounds.

The MVP of the game is clearly Kaemon, who brought Team 2 back from the brink.
Other figures that did better than usual are the vipers (largely responsible for killing Q9), the EOV, Kee-Mo-Shi, and the Deathstalkers (2 MAULs on otherwise tough-to-kill Zettians who had 9 defense).

I was player E. I was really bummed when I was reduced to just Guilty. But then Guilty actually did very well at the end. Because the other team couldn't really attack Guilty because they had better targets or because they were engaged.
