**Vine Bridge UPDATE!!!!!!!!**Aquamaniac27's Custom Terrain

After looking through multiple Custom Terrain posts, (mostly Grishnakh's thread) I felt inspired to make some of my own customs and repaint/finish painting some I made last year.

So I went to our craft closet looking for dark gray, brown, and light brown paint, only to find a TON of black and some sparkly beads. This is what I made.
Custom #1: Mini-Stone Statues

I was digging through all my Heroscape stuff, when something(s) caught my eye. My 8 bright blue order markers from my Marvel set. Didn't like it enough to buy a 2nd, so I had these markers that no one ever used.
I pulled out some clay, and got to working on an idea in my head: Stone obstacles.

I ended up doing all 8 (marvel) order markers. This is what a finished painted one looks like (you can see a side shot of one to the left):


Here's a (crappy) shot of one next to Cyprein.


They make decent tombstones in a graveyard setting.


My friends and I decided to give the statues some special rules. They are going to be destructible objects, and one of the powers will be that any figure advance to a Statue may leave an engagement with out taking a wound as long as the moving figure stays adjacent to the statue.

I really want to make a special mini-scenario for a map like this now...

Custom #2: Bridges

I made these two about a year ago, but painted the hex tiles on the swamp bridge worng, and didn't have any brown paint then either.

This one came from me having a ton of extra balsa wood, and nothing else better to do. My covered bridge. I need to go get some paint for this one. I also screwed up the hex outlines on top of it. Works for regular Heroscape and Marvelscape, as you can tell by the pics.


There are 3 spaces on top, and 6 on the bottom.

Dr. Doom vs. Arkmer.


The hexes on the top are crooked. Those will get fixed when I paint it.


The trimmed edges make putting ladders next to it easy.

Custom #3: Flocked Snow Tiles

Yes, yes, flocking. Been done before. Most notably by Grishnakh. If you haven't seen his thread yet, go read it NOW.

These are my snow tiles. I don't own a TT set, but most of Waves 6 & 7, so I have a bunch of lonely, empty, snow tiles.

I mentioned above I found sparkly bead things. (LOOK ON THE RIGHT!)





Look at how the light catches on the glitter in the beads when I turn the flash on.


The figures balance fine, and they stack normally. The tiles look like snow when the top freezes.

Great job! The vine bridge looks nice. I wanna see what it looks like in full (better vines, etc). Plus those flocked snow tiles look very icy- like Antarctica snow... or like salt mine floors

Thanks. I'll probably run out to Michael's soon and pick a bunch of stuff up. I don't have wave 9 yet, but plan on making a 2-part cave/tunnel out of clay, and using the beads as diamonds inside for the dwarves. Maybe but some hex spaces on top for some extra height advantage.

That's pretty awesome! The flocked snow was my favorite, the way that the light reflects off of them. They look WAY better than the plain white ones. The vine bridge and the Order marker things (Are they gravestones?) are really creative. Great job!

Thanks. And yes, they are gravestones.
As I type this, I have My ice trees and some destructible spikes drying from paint, and I made 2 simple fences that are drying from glue.

Alright! i got three more sets of custom terrain done today! (Thus being a life of a teen in high school during summer...)

Custom #4: Spikes - I broke these...

I'm going to start with the simplest and shortest custom--spikes.
Yes, single hex tile spikes. They're not even on the hexes themselves, for more diversity.

I just made a lump of clay, and stuck tooth picks broken in half in it, then baked it.


I only had enough clay left to make 2. I painted them black and green. I want to get a green paint that better matches the grass tiles though. I'm going to repaint the spikes themselves, and maybe add some red "blood" on the tips.


Here's on orc "falling" into one.


I even made the, draftable. I know 15pts isn't much for these things, but the don't actually count as units, and can't really attack or move. I will set limits on placement when I use them though. Putting them in your starting zone would be a waste of points. Get Otanashi or Isamu. Enough rambling, here's the card:


I tried to make them hazardous enough for the enemy, but safe for who ever has them. I'm assuming if a general is going to put spikes around his army, he's gonna train his army how NOT to impale themselves upon them during battle.

Custom #5: Simple Fence

A very simple fence, been done before. But I found my giant bag of balsa wood sticks, so I can now make a TON of these things.

I just started by cutting strips that fit nicely between hexes.


I made 6...


Then placed three parallel to each other like this:


Placed some on top of those... [NOTE THE STICK ON THE FAR LEFT!]


When I glued the stick on the left down (no, not to the tile) I had to use a "paper weight." Here is Q9 modeling the "pose" for us:


In the end, I had to make 3 more to finish it off.


I made out to be a height of 2. [I'm going to make special rules about fighting over fences/vaulting over them. I'll post those when they get finalized.]


You can twist these around hexes to form different shapes.

All in all, they turned out great. They are durable enough (don't step on or bend them hard!) and are very light weight. I just want to get some brown to paint these. I plan on making on and adding toothpicks to look like spikes for an orc-themed fence. I also want to make one that is closed of to fit on a 7-hex space as sort of a cattle pen.

Custom #6: Ice Trees

Yes! I got these finished! funny thing about these trees, you can get them for $15 at A.C. Moore!


BUT! There was one problem. The one I made, and the one I bought are DIFFERENT! Mine has lots of beads and hot-glue, and the beads stay on. The store bought one has few beads, the hot-glue strings are hanging on still, the beads shed like a dog, and the entire thing is covered in GLITTER!!!!

Anyway... I found a bag of these... rocks (?) as I dug farther in the craft closet.


The light blue ones make nice ice formations!
"Wut is dis!?!? Wut arr dese tings!!!" (Sez Krazy Orc Archer!)


So I cut out a 2-hex base on some wood, lumped the clay on (I made these before the spikes) to make some hills, and stuck my homemade tree on one of the hexes, then imprinted my ice things where I would glue them after the paint.


I painted the clay and base with this metallic white paint on for some extra "gloss". Looks like real snow!


So I added real glitter to it!


Next came the sparkly beads! My favorite!


Let that dry, then glued the ice stones down. (No, they're not horizontal, turn your head!)

Makes for a nice "Winter Forest" scene.


The three traveling vikings come across something none of them had seen before--a Killer Frost HeroClix figure!!


And yes, that is the graveyard from before in the back. I'm going to work on a scene/scenario for it. Probably keep the same scene.

So that is it for my new customs...

OH WAIT! I've decided to paint my covered bridge with one of the Valkyrie's color scheme. Since I want to do a special one for Utgar, It wouldn't look good for Vydar, I have few Einar and no Aquilla figures, and I like the RTTFF for Jandar the best, it's getting an Ullar color shceme!!!! Yay for the color GREEN!!!

Those look great, I would suggest a black wash to that shiny wood, to make it loom more worn however.

Thanks for all your feedback. I dont have much more planed to do for now other than a few more fences and that compound. i want to start looking into doing some Marvel custom terrain, only because I have a boatload of HeroClix (from Marvel and DC) figures waiting to be made into custom cards.

So those are finished. As you've probably guessed by now, I made it out to A. C. Moore and got a bunch of stuff.

Custom #7: Orc Fence

Basically a simple fence, but with spikes (toothpicks). I am going to dry brush the fence and paint the spikes red, after filling in the uncovered spots. I was going to put an Utgar flag on it, but I cant draw, and couldn't get Gimp to size my image right.

Anyway, here's the fence. The shape is perfect for putting on raised ground 7-hex tiles like shown below.


Here is a pic of the fence by itself.


Once I finish painting these, i will get the pics up.

Custom #8: Stone Pillars

The instructions on how to make these can be found in Grishnakh's thread. I made them a little differently, but hey, its customization. You can do whatever you want. Thats the best part about Heroscape...

...Back to the columns, After "chipping" the pillars, I painted them dark gray, then dry brushed them black. They turned out really good.


Just like Grishnakh, I painted both ends of the pillars, and they do indeed make great obstacles when places horizontally.


This was the first custom I played a game with before posting it, so I got to mess around with some rules. Single hex flying characters may land on top of the pillars. The pillars have a height of about 8 1/2, so I just made them 9. It worked out fine. (These are not shots from the game, but in the game, Iskra DID fly on top of one. ) They make decent LOS blockers--for zombies.

Custom #9: Jungle Foliage

Another Grishnakh original custom. Well, the trees anyway. The rest is MINE!

I got the vines and plants for the trees and real vines for my vine bridge (next custom up), but after pulling apart my fake plant and constructing my trees, I had a ton of plant stuff left that couldn't be made into another tree, but other "Jungle Foliage".

Here are trees:


Here is the random plant... ...thing...? Kinda looks like a tentacle vine. Maybe a n EVIL PLANT CUSTOM!!! Nah... better off getting SOTM. If I ever FIND it... I can make 2 more of these.


Here are some reeds. I place them on water tiles, but I think it would look
better on swamp water. I can make 2 or 3 more of these.


I also have these other pieces kind of the like "The Tentacle", but covered in mini-flowers. Haven't decided what to do with those yet.

I thought Abomination looked Swamp-Thingish enough to make into these pics!

Just some close ups:
The bark looks kinda real. I like the mangrove root base, but its a pain to balance out the tree (it has wires running up through it) with it like that.


This is the other base I did. Easy to balance. The gap in the tree isn't intentional, but I have seen trees of vine like this with gaps in them. Even more realistic.


Better to see how tall the tree really is. I need to compare it to a castle wall.


Ahhh... if only Wal-Mart carried SOTM instead of Marvel...
This one was surprisingly tall, but it makes the area seem some much more like an actually jungle.

So those are my customs for now, I have a few more to do. I'll get those up when I finish them.
