Rooting for the Broncos and Seahawks, but I'll take ....

Patriots over Broncos
Seahawks over Niners

Re: Sports: NFL

Seahawks over 49ers. They are just a more solid team. While the 49ers have more weapons on offense, Seattle is decisively better at quarterback and to some extent running back. Plus, they're at Century Link.

Broncos over Patriots. The Broncos are at home, and I feel like Manning will have a good day with all his receivers to throw to.

You're probably right, but just the fact that the Pats aren't going into the game one dimensional (or at the very least are making opponents consider the run D) gives them a different look to throw at Denver this time around. I'm not sure much can be taken from the game in New England earlier in the season considering the number of turnovers.

Re: Sports: NFL

Jim Caldwell???!!!

Good luck, Detroit Lions fans. We've had many good-to-very-good-to-excellent coordinators come through Baltimore over the years. Many of them went on to be head coaches after establishing themselves here.

The personnel the Ravens had on offense this year was not bad, but its output was awful. It was really, really bad, and we had a Super Bowl MVP quarterback and a Pro Bowl tailback alongside him.

I am amazed that Jim Caldwell was hired away.

Many, many thanks to the Detroit organization for taking Caldwell off our hands before the Ravens had to decide for themselves whether to can him.

Have fun storming the castle!

Wasn't he also the guy who took over for Cam mid-season and orchastrated the best offense the Ravens have ever had on the way to the Super Bowl?

I'm not excited about the hire, but I also do not think he's a bad hire. I think the Ravens loss of key personnell on the offensive side lead to the awful season. (Ie Pitta, many offensive linemen to injuries, Anquan Boldin)

Yeah, not thrilled with that one. Bummed we missed out on Whiz and bummed we hired Caldwell.

Re: Sports: NFL

Zaphod, it wasn't midway through the season. It followed the Redskins game, which IIRC was Week 15 or thereabout. Boldin did very little for us in the regular season last year.

According to the stats at The Sporting News site, which I was just looking at a moment ago, the Ravens' final YPC for the year was 3.1. That's .2 behind Jacksonville, handily beating them for the distinction of worst in the league, and .4 yards - almost a half a yard! - behind the rest of the league. Plus we gave up the most sacks of any team in the league.

Zaphod, I have not followed the Lions really at all. I had a mild interest in Jim Schwartz from when he was an ex-Baltimorean coaching at Tennessee, and I always kind of liked him. The Lions did ok under him, I'm skeptical you'll see much of an improvement under Caldwell.

Good luck. Bats, I understand.

Re: Sports: NFL

I'm really happy with the Whisenhunt hiring for the Titans. Of all the former head coaches available, I think he's the best. Kinda wish they'd pushed hard for James Franklin though, or another rising star of a college coach. Seems to me that the Niners and Seahawks have done pretty well following that path to success.

Now we get to figure out what we have on offense - assuming Locker can manage to stay on his feet for an entire season. We also get to find out if we're still a 4-3 defense. Personnel just got FUN in Nashville.

Re: Sports: NFL

D_S was high on Caldwell when he was hired as the OC in Baltimore. Obviously, he hasn't done great this year, but players make plays and he didn't have a very strong lineup, I think.

That said, there's a difference between being a good coordinator and a good head coach. Caldwell's most recent coaching experience is this. Moreover, I think the Lions, perhaps more than any other team on the coaching carousel, needed a big name who could lay down the law. Caldwell ain't that.

But, hey, it's a racial milestone for us at least.

Just wish it came with a more promising candidate.
