Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
Yup.
I feel like Black Mirror hits you pretty hard over the head, as (I suspect, not having finished it) did The Circle. I thought Ready Player One was a good delivery of the same theme, by putting story first and messaging second. |

Quote:
The movie is framed as if the actions she's taking are somehow leading to a desirable result, but that doesn't pass the sniff test, as what she does leads to as horrific an end as what the antagonists were doing. Upon close inspection, it's really unclear what makes them and their actions any worse than hers. And I'm also very shaky on what motivates a certain ally of hers and why he'd help her at all given some of the things she does. C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
I also have been watching Black Mirror and saw Ready Player One this weekend. I would not have drawn the connection between them that you two did, but I can totally see it now. I'm only one episode into season 2, so I still have quite a few episodes to view, but so far I really like the tone of the show. Every episode really makes you think. LOVED Ready Player One and its throw back easter eggs and cameos. If the book is as good as you all say it is, I may need to read it soon.
Semi-Retired C3G Hero (and first Official Member of the C3G Target Audience!) The correct way to add C3G playtests to posts. My favorite day EVER on heroscapers. Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
I imagine that fans of Heroscape would be the book's target audience.

Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
Some mild dissent on Ready Player One (the book; I'm yet to see the movie).
I read it a few weeks ago and enjoyed it well enough, but did not find it especially deep or challenging. Fun, very page-turny, some pleasing references to stuff I know and love, but mostly forgettable. I'd definitely recommend reading it, but it's no Neuromancer or Snow Crash in terms of tech-heavy, decade-defining, thought-provoking novels, which it seems to be getting pitched as in some places. [Wrong thread, but what are the challengers for current-decade novels in this category? I've recently discovered Nick Harkaway, and either Gone-Away World or Tigerman could be contenders (I'm currently reading Angelmaker).] |

Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
I believe they are talking about Ready Player One. The movie is adapted from a book.
I was interested in American Assassin when I saw it advertised last fall so I rented it the other day, it was okay. There were some things I liked about it but the bad guy being another American who had been part of the same program just seemed kind of lame (which I kind of knew from the ads going into it but I still wanted to check it out as I thought the premise of a terror attack survivor going Rambo could have been fun if done right). Reminded me of how the villain of the first two Mission Impossible movies was just another Mission Impossible agent, makes you wonder why the organization exists if they only deal with threats they created themselves. Furthermore his motivation seemed rather underdeveloped. They just don't make generic action movies like they use to. |

Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
No disagreement from me, Ollie. It’s no great work of art. But it’s a fun romp through nerd pop culture of the late 70s through the mid-80s, which is the answer to Tornado’s question.

Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
I do not see the correlation (spelled that right on the first try) with Heroscapers as the 'scape seems to attract all ages from what I have seen.
RPO sounds like a Gen X geared film. Which sounds awesome. The Iron Giant is my all time favorite feature length animated movie. |

Is the Iron Giant just a gun in Ready Player One?

Re: Movies: What did You Watch Last Night?
I am older than Gen-X and my son is younger. We both enjoyed the book and the movie. I feel like Heroscape is a pop culture mishmash and so is RPO, but I have no attachment to whether you are persuaded or not, Tornado.
