Re: College Major

Elstree has a good, solid point - becoming a big-shot director isn't easy. But directing direct-to-video stuff, cable TV shows and commercials is still a job. And there is a lot in film that you can do without having to be a director. You may get your degree and realize that what you always wanted to do was video editing, or writing Super Bowl commercials, or movie reviewing.

Taelord, if you want to do anything in film, I highly recommend a film degree. I know several film majors, and even if you don't get to be the next Spielberg, you still get to work in film. You might write commercial ditties, or cast actors, or even become an actor. If film is your bag, do that.

On the other hand, if all you want to do is write movies, creative writing is going to be the way to go. Because you may not end up writing screenplays, but you might end up writing short stories, novels, poetry, or even just ad copy for Gold Bond Medicated Powder. Keep in mind that the jobs that are the most plentiful and pay reasonably well are the ones doing completely banal stuff - it's nearly impossible to get a job at LucasArts, but it's not too hard to get a job doing CGI cleanup for a small editing studio. You may never get to write summer blockbusters, but it's a lot easier to break into scripting for bad sitcoms.
