I first started noticing/getting irritated with the names HeroScape when my buddy complained about Sudema: “what, they couldn’t get the rights to just use Medusa?” Then I read about the Sacred Band in Larry Gonick’s “Cartoon History of the Universe” and, while researching an argument against Ehud Barak with my brother, I saw that he was trained as a Krav Maga specialist. And everybody knows about Spartacus.

With the help of Google, I put together the following list of HeroScape name origins. Some of these are probably a stretch, like “Kiova” coming from the Finnish name for Kiev, but other names seem like they were just completely lifted off a map. Anybody know some others?

  • • 4th Massachusetts Line – Taken from the “Massachusetts Line,” an army in the American Revolutionary War – the “4th Massachusetts Regiment” was instrumental in the battles of Bunker Hill and Trenton
    • 9th Roman Legion – A Roman legion that attacked the Vikings and other Barbarians in the British Isles
    • Anubian Wolves – Considering Khosumet’s Egyptian style, there is a connection with the Nubian people who live in Sudan and southern Egypt – during their days as the Ku****es, they conquered Egypt and kept the Romans at bay
    • Ashigaru - Japenese soldiers, see this recent thread and some others
    • Braxas – “Abraxas” is a demon in Egyptian mythology
    • Charo – Singer/Actress from Spain…”Coochi! Coochi!”
    • Crixus – Fought with Spartacus during the slave revolt
    • Einar – A surname in Norse mythology and the name for Dwarves in the D&D Dragonlance series

    • Kiova – Finnish name for the city of Kiev
    • Kaemon – A Japanese surname
    • Kozuke – A province in Japan
    • Krav Maga – An Israeli martial art
    • Kyrie – Flying humans from the D&D Dragonlance series
    • Macdirk – About as generic a Scottish name as you can come up with
    • Nakita – A Russian name (like Nakita Kruschev) and the name from the movie La Femme Nakita, about a female assassin
    • Nilfheim – A world of ice and cold in Norse mythology
    • Parmenio –A general for Phillip II and Alexander

    • Shaolin – A Chinese martial art
    • Spartacus – Legendary gladiator-slave who led an unsuccessful revolt against Roman Republic
    • Sudema – Anagram for Medusa
    • Tagawa – A province in Japan
    • Thorgrim – Name for Dwarves in the Warhammer series
    • Ullar – Thor’s son in Norse mythology
    • Vydar – Odin’s son in Norse mythology
I just want to know why they use Spartacus or Jotun and then they mix up Medusa’s name. That really irritates me. I don’t know why.

Now, I know some of the contributors have a penchant for flaming first-time posters and you’re going to think I’m trying to ruin the game for you or criticize me for not knowing every thread on the board. Just know that I’m having fun with the game.

Welcome to 'Scapers.
While never giving much thought to the names, some seem like scabble pieces thrown on a table and put together in order of landing, your research is interesting. A small piece of me wonders what the naming process involves.

Again, Welcome

What an awesome first post! Welcome to the boards mvblair. I think that as long as you present coherent messages here no one is going to flame you.

Several unit names have been assigned by Hasbro as nods to folks that have worked on the game itself. The Knights of Weston, Saylind, Nerak, and Sir Hawthorne come to mind. I'm sure that there are others that fall into that category too.

And the great thing about this community is that someone is going to come along shortly with a huge amount of this information codified into one useful post.

Cheers,
markwars

The anubian wolves are probably more closely tied to Anubis, Egyptian lord of the dead:

But yeah, cool post! Interesting to hear this stuff!

Hi mvblair!

Welcome to Heroscapers.com!

Now, I don't know where you got the idea that anyone is out to flame 1st time posters.
I like to think this community is very welcoming to new members.

Ture, some of the long time members don't like it when new members are rude (some here consider poor writing due to laziness to be rude,) or demanding, or for asking questions without looking at any of the stickies or the FAQ.

But your post it quite interesting! Name origins is one of my favorite subjects.

I'm pretty sure that Charo wasn't the inspiration for Charos!
I mean, he's a King, not a Queen. Charon is the name of the ferrryman from Greek mythology who transported souls across the River Styx to the underworld, the land of the dead, but that doesn't really seem to fit Charos at all, so there must be some other inspiration...
(Mark this one for further study.)

I like to think he's "Finn MacCool" of Celtic legend.

Hmmmm... I thnk there is a more likely another source...
Let's leave that "A" on there and we can easily relate them to Anubis...
He was the jackal headed god of the Dead in Eqyptian mythology.
I would say that Khosumet resembles Anubis even more than the Wolves, but I guess they are his underlings, thus "Anubian" wolves.

Why in the world would it irritate you/anyone that the names of some Heroscape figures just happen to be similar to real life names? *GASP* How dare Hasbro take ideas from real life!
Especially any of Einar's troops, as, if you hadn't noticed, he's the historical general. So what if his guys come from real life?
And if this is Heroscape, the Battle for All Time, why the heck would it bother you that someone like the 4th Mass., who were instrumental at Bunker Hill bother you? Were they not heroes enough for you?!

Hey Necroblade...chill out it's a first post and IMHO a very good first post.
He did say some of the ideas were a stretch, and I do not recall a statement that he was irrated by the 4th Mass. Just Sudema. I’m pretty sure he just investigated to see if there was a 4th Regiment in history or if Hasbro made up the number. And i'm also sure that Charo was ment as a
:P

Mvblair
Medusa of mythology was from Earth mythology and Sudema is from Feyland, therefore they could not use Medusa directly because that would contradict the storyline behind the character. Instead the loosly based her on Meduas and used a acronym to name her. IMHO…brilliant
