If you have or can get your hands on the latest version of Illustrator you can also use Live Trace to convert it. Set the options to color and the max colors to 256. That converts it to a set of color objects, that makes it look a bit tiled or stain glassed, instead of bitmap image. At that point you can select colors or whole color groups and change the colors or apply gradients easily, etc.
Or you could leave the settings at black and white for a whole different look, save it, put it into photoshop and apply some layer styles or other effects. May not be quite as easy as you are looking for but lots of options there as well. |

I have been lookinf online for a good tutorial to do this but most I find don't come out looking right. Grish's has a little bit different filter setting then what I have tried (inverting the image)I will have to try it my self though |

Re: "Cartoonizing" an image?
Another great open source software you can do this easily with is InkScape(I know, even the name is better!)
GET IT HERE http://www.inkscape.org/ In Inkscape it is as easy as: File->Import.. Select the bitmap/photo and Path->Trace Bitmap... adjust some setting based on the desired result and your are done! |
