C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

Best way in my opinion is just to play both sides. That’s how we typically playtest for the various custom projects here like C3G.

There are Google Docs or Tabletop Simulator ways to play with others virtually too.

I second this if you cant find an opponent. Basic rule of thumb is to play both sides to their optimal abilities and strategies without bias to one side or the other. It can be some fun. Not as fun as playing against an opponent though.

I play both sides often when I want to playtest customs I have made or am trying out a new army and my girlfriend (who I usually play with) is busy. It works decently well if you are using units where order markers aren't part of their kit but with units like Shiori it feels a bit off.

Yeah, Gloomhaven is a great source of inspiration. I think when it comes to enemy figure activation, movement, and targeting, they're a great place to look.

To me the toughest two things to "automate" are Order Marker placement and special power uses.
