It looks like Barter in Blood is stronger than Mental Agony, since it can deal damage (to Planeswalkers too!) as well as being playable on Heroes.

Mental Agony has the upside of triggering even if your figure doesn't get killed, so it's effect is more reliable. It's also a hidden enchantment, but that is irrelevant unless your playing Sorin.

Both have the downside that your opponent can attack freely attack the enchanted units if they burned through their entire hand, and it's worse since you still lose the card. But what do you want for 5 points?

Question about “card at random.” Say you don’t have cards in your hand or library, but do have enchantment cards in play. Can they be destroyed by this?

Now why is that? Is the key word “discard?”

Yes. It only affects cards in your hand. If you have no cards, no effect.
