That part is coming soon. Today, hopefully. But the basic is that before you take a turn with any Villain Card (including a Villain Team Card) you roll one combat die to help direct its behavior for that turn. So basically anything that has a Skull by it only activates on turns where you roll a Skull, and so forth.

C3G RULES FOR SOLO AND COOPERATIVE PLAY

SET UP AND HOW TO PLAY

In order to play C3G Superheroscape against an automated opponent, simply choose either an Event Villain Card or a Villain Team Card and the matching Villain Cards listed on that Team Card. Then assemble an Army of your own of matching points.

It is possible to oppose multiple Villain Armies at once and play with multiple players at once. For each additional player you add, you may do one of two things: You may either add an additional Villain Army with points that match that player’s Army or, if you wish to collaboratively fight an Event Villain, you may simply add X+5 to that Event Villain’s Life Number for the game, where X = the printed Life Number for that Event Villain.

ANATOMY OF A VILLAIN CARD

A Villain Card comes with standard Life, Move, Range, Attack, and Defense number, points, and special powers. Special powers are worded in a way that guides the activation of that card within the overall rules for automated cards and may come with Skull, Shield, or Blank symbols beside them.

A Villain Card also has up to three additional numbers, which include Threat Range, Attack Range, and Support Range.

Threat Range is simply a figure’s Movement number plus its Range number. For instance, Cyclops (I) has a Move number of 5 and a Range number of 8, making his Threat Range 13.

Attack Range is the greatest distance from which a Villain figure can target an opposing figure with at least one of its normal attack, special attack, or a special power on its Army Card. For instance, Cyclops (I) has an Attack Range of 8.

Note: Sometimes a figure’s Attack Range will be greater than its Threat Range due to its having a special power that has a greater range than its combined Move and Range numbers. In this case, the figure should use its Attack Range as its Threat Range.

If a Villain figure does not have any special powers that allow it to target an opposing figure without needing clear sight and the closest opposing figure has a special power preventing it from being targeted without clear sight, then the Villain figure’s Attack Range is considered to be 1 instead of the number listed on its card.

Support Range is the lowest listed range on a figure’s power that positively affects friendly figures. For instance, Invisible Woman has one special power that affects friendly figures, her Fantastic Force Field 4. Fantastic Force Field 4 affects figures that are 4 spaces away, so Invisible Woman’s Support Range is 4.

Only figures with the Supportive Personality have a listed Support Range.

Player controlled figures also have Threat Range, Attack Range, and Support Range, but these are not listed on their Army Cards and may need to be calculated by players during gameplay.

A Villain Card still has a listed Species, Class, Size, and Height, but begins to differentiate from there.

Rather than being a Common, Event, Uncommon, or Unique Hero, it is a Common, Uncommon, Unique, or Event Villain. Rather than being Common, Event, or Unique Squads, they are Common, Event, or Unique Villain Squads.

If a special power refers to a Hero, it refers to a Villain as well. If a special power refers to a Squad, it refers to a Villain Squad as well.
Villain Cards come with one of three Personalities, which help dictate how they play. These Personalities are: Aggressive, Calculating, and Supportive.

Note: If all figures in a Villain Army that are on the battlefield have the Supportive Personality, their Personalities become Aggressive instead of what is printed on their Villain Cards.

VILLAIN TEAM CARDS

TEAM CARDS/REINFORCEMENTS
A Villain Team Card will specify all of the Villain Cards that are in an army, which are placed in the start zone at the beginning of the game, and which are reinforcements, as well as the activation order and any special activation rules for each of those cards that influence how they operate as an army.

Villain Team Cards have a Cost Range, which is a series of point totals that they can be played at (such as 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300). When determining Armies at the start of a game, ignore the points on any individual Villain Cards and use the Villain Team Card’s Cost as the total point value for that army.

When Villain Team Cards list the Villain Cards included with that Team Card, the core group will be listed first, followed by any cards that are added on to reach higher point totals.

Reinforcements are figures that do not start the game on the battlefield. Each category of reinforcements will have a number at the end. At the end of that numbered round, those figures should be placed in the Villain start zone according to their listed personalities.

START ZONE PLACEMENT

Aggressive figures are placed first. Each Aggressive figure is placed on an empty start zone space that is as close as possible to at least one enemy start zone space.

After any Aggressive figures are placed, each Calculating figure is placed on an empty start zone space that is as far as possible from the closest enemy start zone space.

Supportive figures are placed last. Each Supportive figure is placed on an empty start zone space that is adjacent to as many friendly figures as possible. If more than one space fits this definition, choose the space that is as far as possible from the closest enemy start zone space.

ORDER MARKER PLACEMENT AND INITIATIVE

Each Villain Army should have a standard set of Order Markers, all of which should be placed, at random, on either the single Event Villain Card or the Villain Team Card.

The Order Markers on a Villain Team Card are considered to be placed on the Army Cards of each figure in the Villain Team for the sake of special powers.

At the start of each round, roll a 20-sided die for each Villain Army, adding any relevant bonuses, to establish that Army’s initiative for the round.

THE ULTIMATE TIE-BREAKER
When activating a figure, if that figure ever has a choice between two or more options that cannot be resolved with the existing tie-breakers, roll a 20-sided die for each option and the highest roll wins out.

REVEALING AN ORDER MARKER

Each time a numbered Order Marker is revealed on a Villain Army Card, all figures associated with that Army Card are activated. For an Event Villain this will mean a single figure. For a Villain Team the order of activation is the order figures are listed on the Team Card.

Once an Army Card that is part of a Villain Team is activated this way, its associated Villain Card should be tapped (turned to the side at a 90-degree angle) to show that it has been activated. At the end of each Player Turn, return any tapped Villain Cards to their original positioning.

SPECIAL POWERS

Before activating any Villain Card, including a Villain Team Card, roll a single combat die and check the results against that Villain Card to see how their special powers influence their activation this turn. Skull, Shield, and Blank symbols will be listed next to any parts of a special power that require those particular rolls to activate during the turn. All other special powers activate normally, based on the timing and triggers specified on the Villain Card.

If a special power would require a Villain Player to choose one of your Order Markers, use the 20-sided die to determine the choice of Order Markers at random (Order Marker 1 = 1-5; Order Marker 2 = 6-10; Order Marker 3 = 11-15; Order Marker “X” = 16-20).

MOVING

Before moving, a figure should determine an Objective for the turn. Figures should always move towards their Objectives. The following principles illustrate how a Villain figure’s Objective is chosen and what principles guide the ensuing movement.


DETERMINING THREAT

When activating a Villain figure with the Calculating or Supportive Personality, its behavior may change based on whether or not that figure is under threat.

To determine whether or not a Villain figure is under threat, assess whether or not that Villain figure is within the Threat Range of one or more player-controlled figures. If the Villain figure is in the Threat Range of at least one player-controlled figure, that Villain figure is considered under threat.

IDENTIFYING OBJECTIVE

When moving, a Villain figure should attempt to move into the closest space where it has its Objective in Attack Range. If it already has an Objective in its Attack Range, it should not move, unless it is an Aggressive figure or it can move toward an Optimal space (see the

Always Optimize section).
If a Villain figure with the Calculating or Supportive Personality is under threat their Objective becomes the closest player-controlled figure. If more than one figure meets this criterion, their Objective should be the figure with the most unrevealed Order Markers on its Army Card.

If a Villain figure is not under threat or if it is an Aggressive figure Under Threat their Objective is determined by the figure’s Personality.

• Aggressive figures always consider the closest non-adjacent player-controlled figure to be their Objective, even while under threat. If more than one figure meets this criterion, their Objective should be the figure with the most unrevealed Order Markers on its Army Card.

When moving, an Aggressive figure should attempt to move into the closest space that is in engagement with its Objective.

• Calculating figures consider the Optimal Space on the battlefield to be their Objective. If more than one space meets this criteria, their Objective should be the closest Optimal Space.

When moving, a Calculating figure should attempt to move onto their Objective space. If a Calculating figure that is not under threat is already on an Optimal Space, it should not move.

• Support figures consider the highest point friendly figure to be their Objective. If there is a tie, their Objective should be the closest of these figures.

When moving, a Support figure should attempt to move onto the Optimal space within Support Range of their Objective. If a Support figure that is not Under Threat is already on an Optimal space within Support Range of their Objective, it should not move.

FIRST DO NO HARM

When moving, a Villain figure will never move in a way that would trigger leaving engagement attacks, immediate damage from terrain (so yes they move onto lava field, no they don’t move onto molten lava), falling damage, or any special powers that would negatively affect that Villain figure’s Life, ability to move, ability to attack, or Order Markers.

The only exceptions to this are either when a Villain Card specifies otherwise or when a Villain figure is both Under Threat and has no enemy figures in its Attack Range and no other path to get an enemy figure into its Attack Range. In the latter case, the First Do No Harm rule should be ignored during movement when it comes to any space that the figure must move onto in order to move toward Attack Range of a Player controlled figure.

MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY

If a Villain figure cannot reach its intended destination during its movement, it should use its full movement to move to the nearest space to its objective that is possible.

If a Villain figure has multiple paths it can take to move towards its Objective, it should choose the one that first follows the First Do No Harm rule and then the one that is the most efficient among possible paths that follow this rule.

If a Villain figure reaches a space that fulfills its Objective, it should stop its movement unless it can continue moving and reach a more Optimal space.

ALWAYS OPTIMIZE

When Villain figures move (including through Villain placement powers), they should always move as to an Optimal space, if possible. An Optimal space fulfills the following criteria:

1. It is unoccupied and that Villain figure could legally occupy it
2. It fulfills that figure’s Objective
3. The space contains a Power-Side up Glyph that will not be harmful to that figure (if applicable)
4. The space contains a Symbol-Side up Glyph (if applicable)
5. The space is the highest level of elevation on the battlefield
6. The space is higher than the level of the space the figure currently occupies
7. The space is the closer to the figure than other spaces that fulfill the same criteria

If a Villain figure occupies an Optimal Space (one that fulfills all of the above criteria that is applicable), it should not move. Otherwise, that figure should go through this list of criteria, in numerical order, to select a more Optimal space to move towards.

When you get to a specific criterion on this list, if a space on the battlefield can fulfill that specific criterion without nullifying a criterion previously fulfilled by another space on the battlefield, including the space the Villain figure currently occupies, then that specific criterion must be fulfilled in the selection of the Optimal space.

Once an Optimal space is determined, a figure should move to that space or as close to that space as it can during its movement.

ATTACKING

After moving, if a Villain figure can attack an enemy figure, it should.

Before a Villain figure attacks, determine how many available enemy targets there are for that attack. If there is only one available enemy target, the Villain figure must attack that target. If there are multiple enemy targets available, use the following priorities to determine which target the Villain figure attacks:

1.Its Objective (Aggressive figures only)
2. If it cannot attack its Objective or does not have an enemy figure as its Objective, it should attack the most Vulnerable figure.
3. If there is a tie, the figure with the most unrevealed Order Markers.

The Vulnerability of a figure is calculated by adding its Life Number and the number of defense dice that figure would roll if attacked by the Villain figure. The lower the total is, the more Vulnerable that figure is considered.

Example: Two players are facing Godzilla and player A rolls a 20, player B rolls a 10, and Godzilla rolls a 2. With these results player A goes first this round, followed by Godzilla’s first Order Marker 1, followed by player B’s first turn of the round, followed by Godzilla’s second Order Marker 1, and so forth.

The Vulnerability of a figure is calculated by adding its Life Number and the number of defense dice that figure would roll if attacked by the Villain figure. The lower the total is, the more Vulnerable that figure is considered.

HOW CLOSE IS CLOSE?

When determining the “closest” figure or space, closeness shouldn’t be measured simply by counting spaces away, but by determining the number of spaces a Villain figure would have to move in order to reach that space. The closest space is the one that takes the least amount of movement for the moving figure to reach.

If an available space fulfills a piece of criteria without nullifying a previously fulfilled piece of criteria, that available space is more Optimal.

Attack and Special Power Optimization

Aggressive figures always consider the closest non-adjacent player-controlled figure to be their Movement Objective. If more than one applicable figure is tied for the most vulnerable, the figure among these with the most unrevealed Order Markers on its Army Card is the Objective.

When moving, an Aggressive figure should attempt to move into engagement with its Objective.

ATTACKING

JUGGERNAUT OF THE JUNGLE

I have to take another look at it, but I think I may be able to cut the Threat Range stuff, as I'm not sure it's relevant for Aggressive figures.
