Shao Kahn Painting Guide

Like many MK characters Shao Kahn has had a lot of looks, I'll mostly be going off of the caped version of him since it matches the figure and simpler to paint.

We're starting with Stryfe (#041 Giant Size X-Men Marvel Heroclix) as our base figure, you can find him for about 2-3 bucks on ebay along with shipping. After that I use a Samuroid and Angrir's Hammer, both of which should only be a dollar or two, but if these aren't available to you any Samurai figure and hammer will do, I recommend picking up Horrorclix Vampire Roustabout since that figure minus the hammer makes for an excellent Jax repaint.


Remove the head, on this figure you can pry it off, and carve out the face just above the eyes, we only want the helmet (or kabuto) and maybe a bit of the forehead if you can get it. Remove the some armor pieces along the waist as well.
On the Stryfe figure, the are 2 or 3 sections of ridges you can easily pull off on the back and back of the head. The head also comes off super easy. Carve off all the edges and some of the back of the head but keep the hole so you can easily slot the face back onto the neck.
The large ridges on the shoulders can be cut into two section to represent the more hornlike ridges on Shao Kahn's shoulders. Shave off those circles above the chest as well.


Now you should have Stryfe's face, the samurai helmet, and the hammer in two pieces to glue on either side of the clenched fist.
Here is where you can choose whether you want to keep the armor in front of the crotch to paint and glue two pieces on the sides for extra armor OR just cut the front one off and replace it with a single samurai armor piece. I went with a single piece since the one on Stryfe is kind of skinny and Shao Kahn thinking he doesn't need much armor to win tracks.

PAINT

Go over all the obvious areas in the skintone you want to use for him, hitting the torso, lower face, upper arms and legs, hands, and the spaces in the forearm gauntlets. It's pretty straightforward.
The armor color can vary, you can also do a gold outline around it all to if you like. Then I mixed a red/brown to paint his armor on the forearms, lower legs, and belt. I painted the crotch armor a brighter red to match the cape. The boots are a leather brown, you can add some skin there too if you want his feet to show. I also used leather brown for the X strap on his chest.
I painted the ridge/crest on the helmet a goldlike color, the helmet is already gold so you can leave as is or paint silver, take whatever liberties you want.
Lastly use white to make two small skulls, one in the middle of his belt, one in the middle of the X. And then cover his upper face down to his upper lip (see reference art in spoilers above. Color his eye area beneath the mask black and give him little red dots for eyes.

If you want extra cool points you can paint the MK dragon logo on the hammer.
