Joseph Sweeny: You should look him up on the internet for some details. Basically, he's a British adventuring hero who is semi immortal, and "regenerates" whenever they need to change the casting. He's been on British TV for many, many years as many, many actors! He is currently on US TV's SyFy Channel as about his 10th incarnation...

He is one man (well... one alien) that can, like chas stated, regenerate into a new form when mortally wounded.

As far as who he is:

"I'm The Doctor, I'm a TimeLord, I'm from the planet Gallifrey, in the constellation Kasterborous, I'm 9 hundred and 3 years old, and I'm the man whose going to save your life's and all 6 billion people on the planet below!"


He's older now, but you get the idea.
