GCF - Grishnakh Custom Superhero Cards

Grishnakh's Custom Figures

SUPER HEROES

Welcome to Grishnakh's Custom Figures! (GCF)

Our custom Superhero cards are specifically designed to work with our custom terrain, custom buildings, and Interactive Terrain Rules. You'll occasionally see the acronym ITF on the cards, which refers to Interactive Terrain Features. (For example cards like Magneto who can toss telephone poles and cars from a distance.)

Using these simple rules you'll be able to have your figures pick up cars, telephone poles, etc., and throw/smash with them.

Of course it all comes down to using what customs you like and ultimately choose to game with. If you do not use our terrain rules you can still game with our custom figures. Just ignore any reference to ITFs on our cards.

Regardless, at the end of the day it's your style of gaming that really matters. With customs there is no right or wrong way to any of this. Our hope is that we've added in a tremendous amount of both fun and tactical options to our cards! With all that said we certainly hope you enjoy our customs!

Acknowledgements
A few acknowledgements are in order. First I'd like to thank my son for the many, many, many hours we spent discussing, designing, re-designing, play-testing, scrapping and starting over, that all of these cards have gone through over the past few years. I absolutely treasure the times we've spent together creating these. And when I say Our cards I certainly mean that. We make a pretty good team I think!

Next a shoutout to all of the people that have played with these custom figures and rules at our game days here on Long Island, NY. Everyone, your help and suggestions were invaluable.

Third, I'd like to acknowledge Sherman Davies. Your cards have always inspired me Sherman! If I've borrowed a bit here and there from your cards it's simply because they are just so freak'n cool. You may not know it but you inspired us to start this project in the first place man!

And lastly I'd like to acknowledge borrowing C3Gs wonderful mechanic for their Green and Yellow Lanterns. While we tried to do a different spin ourselves we just kept coming back to their simple mechanic to represent a power drain. Great mechanic guys!

Cutting out the Cards

Our cards are not meant to be trimmed in "traditional" Heroscape fashion. They are meant to stay as 5" x 5" squares. Carefully trim out the printouts with an xacto knife and a metal straight edge. Or just use a pair of scissors and cut carefully. Light grey trim lines are provided on every card as a guide to trimming.

If you want to protect your cards you can use 5" x 5" CD sleeves. Protects the cards and, if you are using the optional text backings, keeps everything together in one neat package. Slip them into the sleeve back to back. In most cases the backing contains a short bio of the character. In a few cases the backing contains examples of a particular, custom rule.

_____________________________________________________

As of August 6th, 2017 this is an all new, updated set of cards.

You'll note the text "V2 1.0" under the points box of each card. If we ever update a card we'll update that number to 2.0, 3.0, etc. This should make it easy to know if you have the most up-to-date version.

Card Symbols Explained:

_____________________________________________________

A Note on Special Abilities

There are three new types of color coded, sub categories on our cards. They are: Assets (green), Weaknesses (red), and Healing (blue). Assets are abilities that help the character, usually in a way that deals more damage to a weakness. A weakness can and will work against the character. Healing covers the various ways a character can remove wounds. By separating these abilities into three color coded categories we've found that it makes the card easier to understand.

The abilities on these cards are listed in the order that they occur in a turn. Doing it this way allows you to quickly scan down the list and follow them point by point as you take a turn with the character. My hope is this makes all my cards that much easier to understand and play.

1 - Before turn powers / Outside of your turn
2 - Bonding
3 - Movement powers
4 - Defense powers
5 - Attack powers
6 - Special Attacks
7 - End of the turn powers
8 - Other special powers, Assets, Weaknesses, and Healing abilities.

A Note on Card Organization

The cards are organized into the next four posts below, plus a fifth post that contains extra rules and glyphs. The categories are Marvel Heroes, Marvel Villains, DC Heroes, and DC Villains,

The cards are added as I create them and, unfortunately at this time, are not in alphabetical order.

The miniatures they can be achieved in two ways:

• First: There's a lot of green and yellow figures included in the Heroclix War of Light series. Most of these are indeed known characters, however, at this time we have no plans to create cards for them. Besides, it would just get too unwieldy to have a whole lot of individual cards. So we've clumped them into squads. The choice of figures you use is totally up to you.

• The second way is to do what we do. We simply ordered a bunch of cheap figures and painted their costumes on. You don't have to be that detailed with this, just sort of get the general idea of which team they are on. During play no one is honestly going to examine a figure that closely. This of course is a little more work but in the end you have a unique set of figures. Plus it's much cheaper than searching eBay for War of Light figures.

Mantripod (Black Manta)

Notes:
The Mantripod is a McDonalds Happy Meal Toy from 2010. From the Batman Brave and the Bold set. They are named the “Manta Sub-Launcher”.
.

The rules for moving the Mantripod are located on the text card.

Additional Notes and Card Variant:
Realizing that not everyone uses our backing text cards we've included a version of the Mantripod with a full set of movement rules. Doing this, of course, this makes the text much smaller and harder to read. Our personal taste is to not have "rules" on a card, but in this case we made an exception. In all honesty the movement rules for these three space figures are so easy to memorize that you really don't need them constantly in front of you. That's we suggest using the simpler card above.

TERROR VINE FIGURES
When creating figures for the Terror Vines you have lots of choices. Since these are plants, and plants grow in many wild and strange ways, you can use your imagination when creating them. I'll give you two examples. I'm sure you'll be able to find other ways to create these vines.

• The first is to simply use four jungle bushes from the Ticalla Jungle set as the figures. While this looks pretty cool and will work well if you are playing on a flat battlefield like a street, it will be difficult to move the figures around on a battlefield with a lot of raised spaces. Regardless, it works in a pinch.

• Another option is to simply make them by gluing cheap artificial plants/vines found at most craft stores to a base, then covering the base with flocking or more greenery. To keep the figure steady glue a metal washer to the underside of each base.

What figure you use to represent Bomb is totally up to you. The figure should be roughly the height of the Joker’s figure and should only occupy one space. It should also look like it’s able to walk or move somehow. In keeping with the Joker’s theme it should be comical in nature, even if it is extremely deadly. We usually use a Star Wars Gonk Power Droid miniature but any kind of small child's toy, like a clown figure, will work. When we play around the end of the year we use a Mage Knight miniature called the “Santa Clockworkclause 2.0”, a wind up, robot Santa Claus! Recently we acquired a "Symbol Clanking Monkey" Heroclix figure. He's perfect! Be creative and have fun finding a miniature to use!

Grishnakh's Custom Super Hero Figures

Rules Additions and Equipment Glyphs

_____________________________________________________________

Specific, Custom Rules that our cards use:

_____________________________________________________________

FLYING FIGURES AND FALLING
Flying figures never take any type of falling damage.
_____________________________________________________________

MIND CONTROL
Any figure temporarily controlled by another figure will act independently, any bonding the controlled figure might have with any other figure(s) is negated for the turn. If a squad figure is temporarily taken over only that one single figure, not the rest of the squad, is controlled.
• Mindless figures cannot be mind controlled.
• Machines cannot be mind controlled.

Harmful Action Save:
If a controlled figure is moved into a space, or takes an action, that would potentially cause that figure harm on that turn, it gets a chance to avoid taking the action. (This includes moving into Lava, jumping off of buildings, destroying an adjacent ITF that explodes, hitting a character with counter strike, etc.)

To avoid completing the harmful move or action the player that originally owns the controlled figure rolls the 20-sided die. If a Hero figure rolls a 6 or higher it automatically breaks the control and the chosen figure returns to the player who controlled the figure before being controlled. A single squad figure, or a Dimwitted figure, needs to roll a 12 or higher to break the control.
_______________________________________________

VEHICLES
Operators: If there are any usage restrictions as to who can operate the vehicle it will be listed on the vehicle’s card.

Order markers cannot be placed on a Machine card. They are placed on the card of any occupant instead.

If all possible operators are destroyed the vehicle is deactivated and becomes an ITF based on it’s Length.

If the vehicle is destroyed immediately place wreckage in the spaces that it occupied and place all occupants in any adjacent space(s).

Machines cannot be Mind Controlled.

Occupants: Restrictions on the number of occupants that can occupy the vehicle will be listed on the vehicles card.

Entering: If an operator ends their move adjacent to the vehicle, instead of attacking, you may place them on the vehicle’s card.

Occupying: Figures on the vehicle’s card lose the use of all of their special powers and must use the move, range, attack and defense values of the vehicle instead of their own. A figure cannot be targeted while they are on the vehicle’s card.

Exiting: After moving, and instead of attacking, you can place an occupant in any space adjacent to the vehicle.

Placement: This lists the total number of spaces the vehicle occupies on the battlefield.

Length: This number represents the total length of the vehicle. (Not all parts of a vehicle actually rest in spaces, there can be some overhang. The Mole Machine is a good example of this.)

_______________________________________________

SHALLOW WATER
Shallow Water is treated exactly like Swamp Water:
• Shallow Water does not stop movement of any figures (single or doubled spaced).
• Figures will receive falling damage if they fall into a space containing Shallow Water.
• A space with Shallow Water placed on top of it is considered to be a type of water space in regards to any water related Special Abilities or Weaknesses.

Here are the special rules concerning Shallow Water:
• When Shallow Water is placed on the battlefield it is placed on top of the hex tile, but under any figure, ITF, or Glyph that is in that space.
• Shallow Water does not add height to a space.
• Remove a Shallow Water marker at the end of any turn that it is placed on the following types of spaces: Water, Swamp Water, Snow, Ice, Molten Lava, or Lava Field tiles.
• The space that Shallow Water was placed on works just like the land that's under it for all game purposes. For example if placed on Road, Concrete or Asphalt, moving figures would still receive any road bonus movement if they move through it.

Instructions:
Print out the 8.5 x 11 file at 100%. Spray mount the printout to a piece of thin cardboard such as mat board. Using a metal straight edge and an xacto knife carefully cut down each line that the sides of the hexes create. Start and finish your cuts within the boundaries of the sheet. That way all of the pieces will stay in place so it will be easy to make the rest of the cuts. This technique will work fairly well until you get to the last few cuts, in which case you’ll probably need to cut out some of the left over sides one at a time.

_____________________________________________________________

UNDERWATER COMBAT
All figures are considered to be in contact with water for any Special Powers or Weaknesses. For example figures with the special ability "Aquatic" add in their movement bonus. This will also render some Special Abilities or powers obsolete. Atlantean Warriors, for example, have no need to carry and drop shallow water in an underwater battle.

All figures underwater now have the Special Ability “Swimming”, which translates into the same powers that the Special Ability “Flying” gives you.

No figure underwater may use the Special Ability “Flying”. They must now “Swim.”

Movement:
• Figures with Super Strength may move their listed Move number while moving or Swimming.

• Figures with the Flying Special Ability symbol on their army card may move their listed Move number while moving or Swimming.

• All other figures must subtract 1 from their listed Move number while moving or Swimming.

Even though figures can, in a sense “fly” underwater, they can, if needed, walk along the ocean floor as well. This allows them to avoid leaving engagement attacks for example.

Black shadow hexes can be used to represent deep ocean trenches. While we allow figures to swim over these hexes the only characters than can stop on them are The Trench. If a non-Trench figure moves or is forced onto a deep ocean trench space that figure must roll the 20-sided die. On a roll of a 1 they survive and may occupy the hex. On any other roll the figure is destroyed.

It is understood that all figures have some sort of breathing apparatus, unless of course the character is from the deep ocean originally. They will also have the means to propel themselves through, or to fight in, water. Batman, for example, might have a Waterarang. There are no rules for any of this, it’s just meant to add flavor to the game. Feel free to house rule anything you’d like in this regard.

See my Custom Terrain thread for more photos and ideas about how to create your own underwater battle.

INTERACTIVE TERRAIN FEATURES (ITF) Rules

New ITF chart coming soon!

Class:
Each terrain feature has a Class. Typical Classes are:

0-Hand Held (terrain feature can fit in one hand, equipment glyphs)

1-Small (terrain feature occupies one space)

2-Medium (terrain feature occupies 2 to 3 spaces)

3-Large (terrain feature occupies 5 spaces)

4-Huge (terrain feature occupies 7 spaces)
_______________________________________________

Restrictions on use:
• Anyone can pick up and use a Class 0 ITF (Equipment Glyph).

• Only figures with Super Strength can pick up and use Class 1 and higher ITFs. 2 x Class = the amount of Life points you need to use a particular ITF.

Class 1 = Life 2

Class 2 = Life 4

Class 3 = Life 6

Class 4 = Life 8

Note: Tiny figures with Super Strength are limited to picking up Class 1 ITFs.
_______________________________________________

ITF Defense:
ITFs do not roll defense dice. They receive automatic shields equal to 2 x Class. If damage is ever given higher than this number the ITF is destroyed.

Class 0 = Equipment Glyphs cannot be destroyed.

Class 1 = 2 Defense

Class 2 = 4 Defense

Class 3 = 6 Defense

Class 4 = 8 Defense
_______________________________________________

Picking up an ITF:
The class of the object is the cost to pick up that object. If you do not have enough Move left you can still pick up the object but you must roll 1 die strain for each extra Move point.

Carrying an ITF:
If you start your turn carrying an ITF you must subtract the objects Class from your Move. If this takes you below a 1 then you cannot move!

Attacked while carrying an ITF:
If a figure is attacked while carrying an object they must subtract the objects Class from their defense, down to a minimum of 1.
_______________________________________________

Smash Attack Dice:
Figures Normal attack number + the Class of the object. (Target an opponent or ITF on the same level of the attacker, or attackers Height higher or lower.)
(Design notes: Attack = Fist, like using a big baseball bat)

Throw Attack Dice:
Figures Normal Attack number + the Class of the object, divided by 2 (round up fractions).
(Design notes: Attack = Your skill using an object in an attack, Class = the weight of the object being thrown, divided by 2 represents the unwieldy nature of using a non-aerodynamic object as a missile.)

Throw Range:
Figures original Life. Range and height advantage is calculated from the figure.
(Design notes: Life = Strength of figure throwing the object)

Vertical Range:

Class 1 6 Stories (36 levels vertical)

Class 2 4 Stories (24 levels vertical)

Class 3 2 Stories (12 levels vertical)

Class 4 1 Story (6 levels vertical)
_______________________________________________

Rules for specific ITFs:
The height and special rules for each current ITF that we use is listed on the ITF chart.
_______________________________________________

ITF Destruction:
• A Class 0 ITF, or Glyph, cannot be thrown.

• Once thrown a Class 1 (single space ITF) is destroyed, remove it from play.

• When throwing a Class 2+, multi-spaced ITF, target one figure or empty space within range and then place the rest of the object centered in any adjacent space (or spaces). Any figures in a space where an object is placed must first roll defense, and then vacate to any open space adjacent to that figure. Once thrown, or used in a Smash attack a multi-spaced ITF is destroyed. In addition, multi-spaced ITFs used in an attack will create Class 1 Wreckage in the spaces where the object was used.

Catching a thrown ITF:
However, if a figure that could pickup the thrown ITF is attacked with any size, thrown object, and that defending figure takes no damage from the attack, they can elect to catch the object (before any other affected figures roll defense dice). In this case any other targeted figures would not need to roll defense as the object would not hit them. They’d be saved!

Terrain Terminology
Our terminology as it pertains to terrain features. We identify 3 types of terrain on the battlefield:

Terrain Tiles
These are the actual tiles that you build the battlefield out of (grass, rock, sand, water, ice, snow, road, lava, lava field, etc.). At the moment we do not have any specific rules regarding these types of tiles other than the normal Heroscape rules associated with those tiles.

Objects
These are basically Non-Destructible Objects. They are placed onto the battlefield, but you cannot interact with them, nor destroy them. Some examples would be buildings, trees, large rocks, castle walls, bridges, etc.

Interactive Terrain Features (ITFs)
ITFs are terrain that is placed on the battlefield that you can use, or interact with. You can pick up these items and carry them, or use them as weapons. These items are such things as cars, street signs, computer consoles, train cars, equipment "glyphs", etc. All Interactive Terrain Features fit neatly into 1 of 5 categories, or Classes. This allows you to purchase or make ANY type of terrain for your games. All you need to do is to determine what class the item fits into, both size and weight wise, and determine if there is any special rules based on that object (like explodes when destroyed, etc.).

A note on Destructible Objects
There are only two Destructible Objects (or DOs) associated with the official game, the castle door and the wall section of the ruined warehouse. Both of these are static objects. We currently do not have any specific rules regarding this type of terrain other than the normal Heroscape rules for them. Our group always felt that DOs were way too limiting in what you can actually "do" with them, which is to just destroy them. Unless they are part of a very specific scenario objective (like destroy mole man's underground earthquake beam before it destroys New York) we do not use Destructible Objects.

Equipment Glyphs:

Here are the equipment glyphs. Print them out, adhere them to some thick mat board and trim them out. We'll be updating this image as we add more equipment glyphs.

Undersea Adventure!
Specialty Cards, Rules, and Scenario:

_____________________________________________________________

All of these creatures can be purchased at most arts and craft store such as Michael’s. For our set we purchased two of the Safari Ltd. “Ocean Toob” and one package of the Safari Ltd. “Deep Sea Creatures Toob.”

It’s really easy to base these. All you need is a couple of packages of Drapery T-Pins and some plastic bases from Impact Miniatures. Take a pair of pliers and bend the bottom of the T-Pin at a 45 degree angle as close to the “T” junction as you can. This part will lay flat under the hollowed out area of the base. Then carefully push the pin through the base so that the “T” section will fit underneath. We used a dab of superglue to hold it in place. Then it’s easy enough to center the soft plastic “fish” over the pin and push it on.

Since they must start in “Deep” water spaces the neutral, specialty squads and three uncommon heroes can really only be used if you are playing an undersea adventure.

• The Creatures of the Deep are Neutral Common Squads, each containing three figures. They are evenly scattered around in the middle of the board, at least 10 spaces away from any starting zones. Since they are a neutral squad either side can use them during a battle. They are activated through Aquaman, Mera, or Ocean Master’s card. In this case it’s best to print two copies of the card.

• The three Trench Monsters are given to the bad guys side. You have to place order markers on these cards to be able to use them.

Scenario:
In an effort to raise awareness of Atlantis, and to promote peace between the ocean dwellers and their land based counterparts, Aquaman has decided to lend the “Crown Jewels of Atlantis” to the Metropolis Museum of Natural History. Needless to say citizens line up around the block to get a rare glimpse of the fabulous treasures of the undersea kingdom. Back in Atlantis however, Black Manta, sensing an opportunity, goes to Aquaman’s half brother Orm (Ocean Master) and enrages him. “How dare our land loving King remove the Crown Jewels! I shall not suffer this insult to Atlantis!” Black Manta’s plan works as Ocean Master gathers an army of the deep to march on Metropolis to recover the Crown Jewels. Upon hearing this news Aquaman contacts the Justice League for help. Thus the first part of the battle is joined beneath the waves on the ocean floor.

Setup and Rules:
The board is longer than it is wide, with the deep sea trenches at one end where the bad guys set up. The good guys set up on the opposite end. The object is for the bad guys to get a percentage of their forces off the good guys end of the board so they can storm onto the shore of Metropolis for part two of the battle, the taking of the museum. How many depends on the number of players and the number of figures being used. A good number to shoot for is around 20% of the bad guys total army.

Looking forward to these.

Also, I assume your son will be duly credited at a later date for his help with this project.

You are absolutely correct in assuming that! It truly has been a partnership. My son has been playing Scape for the past 6 years and was our very own IslandScape champion last year. He really knows his Scape!

So the way we've been working is that I come up with the initial design, he looks it over and tells me he likes it and then what's wrong with it, I go back and tweak it, he tells me where it's working and where it's not, etc. We then sit down and play one-on-one using the new card along with the older ones. Then we adjust some more, etc. I hate to think how much ink we've wasted printing out cards that wound up crumpled in the garbage can.

The last step is to bring them to our monthly gaming group and let them give them a spin. Sometimes we get feedback, sometimes we don't. But they seem to be generally liked (or perhaps tolerated). Remember, some of these guys are the ones designing C3V customs so we listen pretty intently when a card is questioned.

Anyway, these are the cards you gamed with when you were here a few weeks ago. Even though that was a massive, confusion of a game, I certainly hope you liked what you saw! At the very least they give just one more option to game with.

Hopefully you're at least printing out first drafts in black & white, not color.

For my own designs, I usually just write out the necessary details on scrap paper for playtests.

You know I value your opinion on how these play Mr. Davies. In fact several of your own card designs were the creative inspiration for several of my cards. As I mentioned, there's bound to be a lot of overlap here.

We do the whole scrap paper thing on occasion. It's just that the right art is so important to the look and feel of my cards that I really need to get that right first. (As you may note I'm breaking the rules of card design with the art here. Super art for Super Heroes!)

That also helps with the research I do on each and every character. Once I have the art and the research done the abilities and stats start to fall into place. Especially since I have a power grid of the characters I've already nailed down. That helps when it comes to plugging in new characters on the grid strength, speed, and intelligence wise. That's why the first 30 or so characters were the hardest to make. I had to establish the grid first.

Anyway, what that all means is a lot of wasted ink. Recently I've started just printing out patches when the wording of a card changed. That's helped save on ink!

Those cards look amazing. Very nice work.
I agree, Dimwitted is a very cool power, I may have to steal, errr, borrow that sometime. Man, that Rhino card looks awesome.

The power is yours to use Mr. Tornado! I'm sure you'll see it crop back up, say on Killer Croc perhaps?
