Movie: 30 Days of Night

I never really read the comic, but I thought the premise behind 30 Days of Night was brilliant. What happens when a bunch of vampires invade northern Alaska where they don't have to worry about sunlight for 30 Days?

Here's the trailer..

If sunlight is a problem, why not just move to Antarctica where they won't have to worry about it for half a year?

That looks pretty cool. I love the camera work in the trailer.

I'd say lack of food would be a problem.

Looks wickedly good.
I've never even heard of the graphic novel!

I think the look of some of the scenes owes a lot to John Carpenter's The Thing.

Here's the Wiki entry on it to give some more background. Templesmith's art takes awhile to get used to.

Josh Hartnett really shined in Lucky Number Slevin and Sam Raimi is a beast of a director for things like this. I say this movie is looking like it will stand in the top ranks at the end of the year. Just one more reason why 2007 will be remembered as the year of the elite for movies in my book...

You better hang up garlic and leave your light on or the vampires will eat you.

Raimi isn't actually directing. David Slade is. (Not Spade) Raimi's production studio "Ghost House" is producing. That's why his name's attached. It's the same studio that produced The Grudge and The Messengers.

I certainly hope this film is better than the two you mentioned above, as those were pretty lack-luster. Again, no fault of Raimi. Because you know the studio tags his name on everything they can to make more money.

While I did enjoy the trailer, I'm not much of a Hartnett fan. I think the most I've liked him was his work in Sin City (a limited part, obviously), and Black Hawk Down. Everything else I've seen him in has been pretty weak.

But as I mentioned above, the movie looks promising. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the issue of time (if they do at all), in that the premise is vampires feasting on a town where night lasts more than a month.
