HeroSpace Project Thread

Hello!

Inspired by the Heroscape Giant thread, I would like to try and create a working version of some form of space combat game using the Heroscape ruleset. As most of my appropriately-sized miniatures are Star Wars ones, that's what I will be using to create a playable base game that the community is more than welcome to improve on!

Changes to the original rules:

All units are presumed to have the fly ability

Levels are ignored except for determining line of sight (which should be from any cockpit or bridge, if they are obvious)


I'll add to this 'list' once I begin testing the game. For now, the rules I have are as follows:

Proton Torpedos
IF an X-wing Squad unit attacks an enemy that is Large or bigger, it may roll 1 extra die in the attack

Evasive action
If the X-wing squadron does not attack during its turn, it gains +1 defence

Y-wing Squad
Common Unit

Range 2
Attack 1
Defence 1
Move 6
Small 1
Units 3

Bomber
IF an Y-wing Squad unit attacks an enemy that is Large or bigger, it may roll 2 extra dice in the attack


B-wing Squad

Fighter-killer
When a B-wing Squad attacks a small unit, it may add 1 die to its attack and re-roll up to 1 die


The Milennium Falcon

This unit takes no damage from asteroid fields it moves through (WIP)


TIE Fighter Squadron

Unrelenting assault
When you activate at TIE Fighter Squadron, you may move up to 8 TIE Fighter Squadron units, though only 4 may attack

Blazing speed
If a TIE fighter unit moves its maximum movement in an activation, it gains +1 defence

Star Destroyer

Point Defence
Any skulls you roll when defending against small units that the small unit does not roll shields to counter cause damage to that small unit

Corellian Corvette
Common Hero

Blockade Runner
The Corellian Corvette may move twice in its turn if it does not attack

Double Attack

Fighter Bonding 1
When you activate this unit, you may also activate up to 1 fighter model

Imperial Assault Carrier
Common Squad

Defence 2
Move 4
Medium 3
Units 2

Transport 4
This unit may have up to 4 embarked model’s on it at any point (place these on the unit’s army card). These models are destroyed when the Imperial Assault Transport is destroyed if they are still on its army card


Fighter Bonding 2
When you activate this unit, you may also activate up to 2 fighter models

Normal HS units/scenery that interacts with HeroSpace games (if you want to play side-by-side)

Ion Cannon shots
When you activate the ion cannon, you may select one HeroSpace model. Roll the D20 and halve your result, rounding up. If your result is higher than that of the enemy model, that model may no longer take any action until next round

Emplacement Bonding 1
When this unit is activated, you may activate up to 1 other model with the type 'emplacement'

Glyph of Planetfall
If a figure stands on this glyph and a figure on the corresponding planet on the space map has transport capacity, you may remove this model and place it on the space model's card, and now counts as being embarked within the space model.
If a space model takes an activation and ends its move on a planet space, it may place any embarked models onto the Glyph of Planetfall or as close as possible. Those models may not take any action during this activation

So is the idea here that the battlefield scale will be such that spaceships will be the units represented (with people being too small to represent?).

Are you wanting to create any actual “outer space” terrain? (I envision a mostly black star field mat broken up by the occasional rock or stone piece representing cosmic bodies like meteors).

There are some cool maps here that are resisting my linking them to show them off, but if you Google "Hex Space Map" you'll see the kind of thing I had in mind.

Neat idea! I feel like there could absolutely be some unique rules added to make it feel separate. Maybe some sort of aerial maneuvers?

I actually had a similar idea involving nautical battles within the Heroscape universe. This looks interesting!

I would think most of those maneuvers should come from special powers on cards.

This is a fair point. I think a good source of inspiration to look at would be OG Battlefront 2 space levels, which to me is the best space combat there is short of Starfox.

Thanks for all your help - and yes, I see the game similar to how you do. I want to do terrain, but I don't know how I'd do it if everything is basically floating all the time (for example, how would LoS work with this terrain? do we just pretend this is a 2D world?)

Thanks for the support guys. And thanks for this awesome idea! One of my other customs (the Giant-scale HS Helicopter squadrons) has something kinda like this, where it gains +1 defence if it doesn't attack on a turn. I'll add it to the tie fighter and X-wing and see how it goes
