Ten years from now I know I’ll wish I’d kept track of my games. In the year or so since I’ve begun playing competitive ‘Scape I’ve learned so much, so I want to be able to look back and see my growth over the years. The forums seem like a nice place to keep track of these. I’m not sure yet if I like delineating online events or if I should just lump all online games together, but to me OST feels way different than OHS feels way different than SHCCL feels way different than single-day events, etc. I’m pretty confident that I should keep Lincoln tournaments and other tournaments separate. I never bring a “winning” army because it feels weird to want to win your own event.

Always the bridesmaid (well, 2/5 finals for OHS seasons isn’t bad). Still would’ve been nice to win this one, and it would’ve been an impressive comeback story after a first round loss. Still, my opponent got the ideal dice-off/map/drop/initiative combo in the finals, and while I dragged the game out as long as possible, it wasn’t meant to be. Disappointing, but there will be more finals to come.

A first round loss never feels good, especially one as close as this. My opponent got to draft first and picked the Ravager pod, which made sense on the swamp map. I drafted his Braxas and my Airborne pod to counter the Heracles pick I knew was coming. Had I got the first round drop, I’m sure I could have won the game, and the airborne should take out Heracles in a round, even without an initiative win. They didn’t drop until round 3. However, I managed to dance around with Braxas and only take 5 wounds before aciding Heracles out of existence. With a ninja down from throw, I moved out Braxas and started blasting Ravagers. That’s when the Airborne dropped, and they killed Olog before the Hide in Swamp started popping off for knightoflight. I should’ve used my grenade drop on Braxas, who was absolutely tanking attacks. That was my big mistake of the game. But I kept using the powerful normal attacks and hoping for misses on the hide, which wasn’t working. The ninjas made it really close, but failed the key Vanishes.

I picked first and went with the airborne. I was hoping that a good drop would dominate any other pod, and it did. My opponent picked the Eilan and Kaemon, which was a solid army on the jungle map. I went with Heracles because none of the other options seemed too appealing, although the black wyrmlings were pretty tempting. But I trusted Heracles into Kaemon and the Sentinels more. The round 1 drop went perfectly, although the grenades only went 1/2 twice, and the other two were duds. Still, it took out two Eilan, and the Airborne were able to kite all but three. Heracles then went to town on Concan, the last Eilan, and Kaemon. The sentinels survived but some solid ninja strikes and a missed Reconstitute let me corner the last one without a Reconstitute spot. Really close one.

Cubbage drafted first and went with the Dzu-The. I like the spiders into that pod, so I went with them and Kaemon Awa. Cubbage took the other map pod, and so we set up a spiders into Dzu-Teh which went horribly wrong. Wyvern got burned and the spiders’ offense never showed. However, Kaemon went insane, taking out all the blade gruts, both Ice Trolls, the White Wyrmling, and dropping the Dzu-Teh down to three squads. The wound glyph was a problem for the Sentinels, but a nice Reconstitute roll let them finish off the Dzu-Teh.

Stupendous picked first and went with Kaemon. I went with the airborne to counter it, and also Heracles to pre-counter the map pod of Avernus and Shurrak. The gorillitroopers were the next choice. Another first round airborne drop sealed the deal for me, especially since they just refused to die to both Kaemon or any gorillitroopers. By the time they’d worked through them, it was just one squad vs Heracles, which is a nice matchup for Heracles. With a lot of wounds to spare he went after the Sentinels and Otonashi, closing the game without having to put any OMs on the ninjas.

I picked first and went with Kaemon/Sentinels. Chris went with the Nakita pod and the Drudge pod. The Drudge seem decent but the Ravagers seem like a much more obvious choice. I guess Chris was worried about a Kaemon opened and Quick Release killing 5-6 in a round. I went with the Varks since I wanted to charge in and didn’t want a melee screen. An aggressive strategy was the correct play. Chris barely got out of his startzone when I went all Varks. Some lucky hits on Re-Tak-Shi at the end of the round forced Re-Tak-Shi next to the Kelda glyph, but the height and Arktos-boosted attacks shredded the drudge and RTS. I charged back down into the start zone and tangled with the Nakitas, who missed the two smoke powders they hit. A Kozuke took out a Greyspear but that just let Arktos finally attack. Clean game from start to finish.

One of the longest and most exhausting games I’ve ever played, but in a good way. We ended up with Airborne/Ninjas/Kaemon/Sentinels on my side and Eilan/Racheim/MWs/Concan on mega’s side. The airborne didn’t drop the first round, so I opened with the ninjas, hoping to get some solid hits on Racheim in the startzone by ignoring the Eilan. However, the first and second strikes by the Eilan on the ninjas both hit, and the last ninja killed an Eilan on a glyph, which was the only offense they generated all game.
The airborne. Did. Not. Drop. All. Game. 9 rounds, 9 rolls, 2% chance to not drop and I managed it. Truly unbelievable. And yet, once again, Kaemon went off, killing Racheim, the Marro Warriors, and 5 Eilan, before falling to a one-wound Concan thanks to a poor initiative roll. Concan swooped in and killed a Sentinel, but they reconstituted immediately and finished him off. They ground through the last two Eilan without dropping, and Kira Jax get the hit through. Super intense, long game where I started round two essentially 200+ points down.

RIP. He picked first and went with the airborne. Fine, Kaemon and Heracles for a Shurrak counterpick should be perfect if the airborne don’t drop round one. Develop up, hide the Sentinels and Heracles behind the big ruin, get Kaemon in position to take height if they drop round two. Well, vegie got the crucial roll and that’s all he needed. I played super well with Heracles but the Sentinels just weren’t fast enough to get through the last cowboys (vegie also got some super clutch safe lava rolls to keep some key wounds off cowboys). But I just couldn’t get through the range, and eventually my reconstitute fell. Wouldn’t have played it any different except for placing Heracles for a more desperate Clayton Pierce play in Round 1.

Lincoln Season II (January 2023)
Format: Classic General Wars (470 points, at least 370 same general, 19 figure limit, no VC)

Second tournament I ran, and it was a ton of fun. In hindsight, I would really like to be able to set up maps the day before somehow. I had some maps set up on poster board that helped with setup, but it was just way too stressful anyway. However, once the tournament got running, I could relax and have fun playing Heroscape. And I had a ton of fun! We had some very new players and some very experienced players. I brought a goofy army again because I didn’t want to win all my games, but I didn’t want to lose them all either. However, everyone happened to win at least one game, so that was also pretty cool. I’m looking forward to the next Seasonal, hoping an even bigger group!

This army went on to play in the finals. This is obviously the only viable General Wars Greenscales army. It’s also a super rough matchup for the Guardians because they can’t get to high ground before the greenscale advance can. Charos did end up going down, but not before I’d lost all but 2 granites. Johnny fell to a swarm of greenscales pretty quickly, and Marcu finished up the last elementars. Almost winnable if I get some more early hits from range on Charos, but they weren’t rolling super great.

It’s always interesting to see how people fill out the figure limits. This one was pretty comfortable. The guardians had some trouble getting onto the single hex 4 height on Aeon, but once they were there, they were absolutely unassailable. It also helped that the only time my opponent maxed out the Wolves’ attack dice was when there was only one wolf within striking range. Marcu did come out and start chomping granites pretty easily toward the end, but Johnny stone-cold stunnered him with a 3/3 shotgun blast on my own Granite Guardian. It was such a great ending, I actually wrote about it in my short stories thread. Great game, super fun opponent.

Round 3 Opponent: Madelaine

A loss by one phantom knight. The closest it could have been. I wasn’t too disappointed about it since I’d already won a game, and that was enough for me. I wanted to just trade granites for phantom knights, but they got more kills than they should. I maybe did too, since I went three for three kills on phantom knights from range in one round. But, the PKs chewed through some pretty abysmal defense rolls, and Me-Burq-Sa managed to snipe another with a paralyzing stare (although the previous paralyzing stare success had blanked, which was pretty funny). Johnny’s special came in super handy, but his low defense was rough against the remaining four phantoms. Still a fun game.

Round 4 Opponent: Malachi

Pretty comfortable win. I pushed for the Valda glyph while he went for Wannok instead, but then accidentally left an order marker on Nerak which wasted a turn and pretty much sealed the game for me. 5 move GGs is super scary, and I was able to take out Nerak in one turn, Grimnak the next round, and worked my way through the remaining heavies pretty easily.

OST Season 1 (November 2022-January 2023)
Format: Bring 4 (500 points, Delta pricing, first Master set and waves, can share and play in order)

Eh. Not a huge fan of the bring 4, play 4 in that order format. I had a decent sense of the meta I think. I had identical armies to a lot of the top cut players, I just got pretty unlucky with matchups, which is a big part I don’t like. You could bring the best armies, but play the wrong players in the wrong order and you’ll be 0-4. The whole thing feels luck based to me. I get that unlucky matchups happen and you should prepare for it, but if that’s the case, you should just run the same army every time, so what’s the point of the bring 4? There’s no fun in that. The only part I like was the wayback machine. It was fun because I was an actual child when this game came out, so I had no idea what the competitive scene was like back then. Turns out they played on some horrible maps.

This was unbelievable. Turns out Turret Rocks was in the map pool. I didn’t look at the map pool. I wasn’t glued to the Discord, and I didn’t realize the map pool would contain incredibly unbalanced maps from the bad ol’ days. Least fun I’ve ever had playing a game (no fault of Sheep, they were a good sport). I thought about conceding before the match even started, and I might as well have for all that happened. I think I killed two of his arrow gruts. Genuinely wanted to quit the tournament, I hated it so much. My cat could have beat me with that matchup on that map. Truly a mind-boggling tournament choice, and a main part of the reason I’m keeping OST separate from OHS. I’ve never considered conceding an OHS game before it started. That truly should never happen, and that’s on the tournament design, not the player.

This one almost felt winnable. I led with the knights to try to hold Wannok, since another really weird map choice meant I had a knight totally isolated on Valda. But, that turned out to be a mistake. I should have just huddled with the knights and blasted with the Krav. The Zettian Guards also fell way too easily. Oh well.

This one felt bad. 11 rolls for the Drones and I only got a 13 or higher twice, and only 1 of those was a 9 activation in which I could only make four attacks. The worst part about this was that it was highways and dieways but with the attack and defense glyph. Krug sat on that attack glyph and it was a miserable experience, but would have been mitigated had I hit the expected 5 six-activations or higher. The drones relied too much on RNG, and Raelin just made this a slog. Wouldn’t recommend.

My only win of the season. Caps opened with the MWs, which wasn’t a terrible idea. However, I actually had 2 OMs on Thorgrimm, and threw him up to the hill closest to his start zone, getting a kill with a solid 3/3. He tanked the MW attacks, and then the 4th mass moved into position on another initiative win to force the MWs to clone. Unfortunately caps got both clones without water, but I did kill one on the next turn without WTF. He killed a 4th Mass, but the next WTF got two more Warriors, so caps had to retreat and attempt to clone, which failed. After that, it was pretty easy cleanup with the Thorgrimm boosted 4th on a hill making it pretty unassailable for the Knights. Going with the Zettians may have been the better choice, but it maybe didn’t matter with 5 defense. Finished the game with only 5 dead 4th.

2022 C3V Playtesting Tournament (August-November 2022)

This tournament was pretty fun for the most part (with the exception of the last game, but that wasn’t my opponent’s fault). My Nidhogg army never got played, and my ‘Cron army always got played, so it was an interesting one for sure. At the 550 point values Omegacron just becomes way more viable, although I argued through the playtesting that Betacron at his current points is pretty useless when you could replace him with another squad of Repulsors. Regardless, I had fun testing out all the new units, and I’m thrilled Maekor is out now!

Brean picked first and went with my ‘Crons. I figured the Greenscales/Janos had the best chance to win, and they almost pulled it off. They were super tricky to play, but there are some really fun tricks the mercenary faction can pull with treasure glyphs, and it kept them alive for a long time. My best shot was Maekor into Omegacron 4 v 6 twice that failed to do a single wound. Had those done one or two, I would have been a closer game, since Isamu managed to wound Omegacron as well before falling. If Omega had gone down, the two snipers and two repulsors left may not have been enough. But it was not to be.

This was a crazy game. Possibly the top finish of a competitive game I’ve had so far. I drafted the ‘Crons first and kevindola went with the Dreadguls. He opened with Guilty who did squat before dying, even though he really should have gotten some kills. The real kicker was Wannok, which I failed twice in a row, which not only killed two of my repulsors instead of dealing two wounds to him, but it allowed him to get onto Wannok as well. That 5 wound swing was pretty critical. The game came down to an initiative roll. A 1-life Janos faced a 1-life Omegacron next to my start zone, and a 4-life Maekor sat next to my Repulsor on Wannok while a lone sniper looked down. Kevindola won initative, and took out Omegacron with Janos. That was my turn 1, but he’d also hedged his bets and switched to Maekor, whose 1/4 was blocked by the little repulsor. I didn’t like to 1 dice shot into Janos with Maekor right next to Wannok, so I took a shot down on Maekor which dealt two wounds. Maekor again took a shot at the Repulsor, who valiantly blocked it, and that changed the game. Instead of having to take a chance on Janos to not have another initiative roll to bet on, I focused down on Maekor again. A 3/3 from the sniper blew him off the board, and a successful Wannok roll brought down Janos. Crazy finish and crazy game, still a legendary one in my mind.

I got to pick first, which was basically the game right there since I could pick the ‘Trons. There wasn’t a single good army into them. Maybe the greenscales could’ve done something, but they got totally outranged. Chris went with the Deathstalkers, and while a Patroller opening did present some challenge, I managed to kill him before his power cells got going. Then the deathstalkers just had to bash their heads against the wall, and there were enough repulsors left that Eltahale didn’t really stand a chance against heighted repulsors. Just a really solid matchup for me. I did love Patroller E-25 though.

This one was sad. He deferred first pick. I went with the ‘Crons and he went with the Cathar. Unfortunately, I’d apparently been misreading Omegacron’s card all that time. He needs line of sight to a targeted figure, not the targeting figure. I called the game with only 4 dead snipers and 2 dead repulsors, because it was clear it was over with all the LoS blockers on the map. I’d moved Omegacron into the worst position until Blue Trails pointed it out to me a round in. Just sad honestly. I read new (to me) cards much carefully from now on.

OHS Season 49 (August-October 2022)
Format: Delta Classic (555 points, 24 hex limit, no VC, reverse draft playoffs)
Army: Nilfheim, Raelin (RotV), Greenscale Warriors x3, Isamu
Record: 4-1 (Quarterfinals Loss)

Man this was disappointing. This is a clear contender for the top Delta Classic army. That army (kinseth brought an identical one) went 7-1 in the regular season before the reverse draft playoffs, losing only to a Krav/Raelin/Warriors of Ashra build. When the reverse draft hit, my own nerfed army still beat me. With the more recent Delta changes (30 point increase on Rae+Nilf) I’ll be curious to see if it holds. To be honest, I never really needed another squad of greenscales because Nilfheim never died, and I stretched them out a lot (who needs development? It’s all about engagement). But, this was my only 4-0 regular season playoff, and had it been straight single elim, I’m pretty sure I would’ve had a good shot at the finals.

The closest game all season in my opinion, although the result with Nilf still on the board didn’t show it. Vegie dad developed super well, staying just out of Nilf’s shard+aura range until he could get on the road. I did my best to block with Greenscales, but I couldn’t keep Spartacus from hunting Nilf. Spartacus hit a 5/6 on a half-life Nilfheim, which Nilfheim countered with an unbelievable 5/6 defense. Then Nilf and the Greenscales came out swinging, and once Spartacus went down it was pretty easy cleanup. If Nilf blanks on that single roll, or even rolls an average 2/6, it’s a loss. Really wild outcome.

Round 2 Opponent: Megasilver

Very interesting army. Taelord did not move the whole game, while I threw Raelin up pretty far forward on height next to jungle, which was the right call. Then, I essentially had to time Nilfheim dodging in and out of Raelin’s aura with Greenscale engagements. It was pretty tricky managing placement, especially since all Mega had to do was continuously move up and take shots of 3 at full range. I did make a mistake placing Nilf in shadow and jungle, forgetting that it doesn’t affect him, and Mega had two shots from height without Nilf in the aura, but they didn’t go through, and Nilf survived with only 1 wound to show for it. 18 dead Tagawa later and it was Nilfheim’s game.

This game and the next played out almost identically. I lost init and threw up Raelin to a decent spot. He rushed with one squad of 4th mass and peppered Raelin. Nilf charged in and took out only 1 4th mass. Wait then fire killed Raelin but didn’t do much to Nilf. Then Ice Shards went hot and finished off the forward 4th mass. The greenscales and their king climbed to height, and the engagement mechanics kept Nilf from ever taking all 4 attacks of 2 v 5, which has a pretty solid chance to do at least 1 wound in a round. Nilf did finish with 2 lives left, and I had a full squad of greenscales still in my startzone, with 1 in the center of the map. Interesting pounding through 20 figures. Having to choose between proper development and hitting an exposed Raelin is too good of a choice, and once Nilf gets momentum he’s impossible to stop.

Again, almost an identical game. A squad of 10th rushed up to kill Raelin on a won 1st round initiative, which they did successfully. It wasn’t enough to keep Nilf from rampaging on height. Kevindola did pull a surprise Iskra turn and get the Rechets out successfully, which almost swung the game. But they never landed the 3/3 on Nilfheim that they needed, and Nilf survived with 1 life left. This time, the last squad of Greenscales were at least out of my startzone.

The blasted reverse draft. I coaxed dysole down to only 7 greenscales and no Isamu. I should’ve prepped better; I’d always won the other games with at least three greenscales on the board, and the cutters are so bad into Nilfheim. My Nilfheim also totally bricked his ice shards, putting no wounds on their Nilf and killing only 2 greenscales. Their Nilf also hit crazy Ice Shards into my Nilf. Maybe I should’ve gone in for the bite, but with those dice, it wouldn’t have mattered, and I wanted to clear out Greenscales to get good cutter runs on Nilf. Either way, it’s such a brutal matchup, and I just needed to draft better. That was my first ever reverse draft game, so I have the benefit of hindsight.

I finished 5th in the tournament despite going 3-1 with only 13 attendees. I’m not sure if there was some sort of confusion with matchups, but I don’t know mathematically how 40% of the attendees can have a record of 3-1 or better with proper placement. However, I know at least 2 of the 4 people in front of me took byes, and it could have been more. Honestly, I should’ve won this tournament. My one loss was against the most annoying, cheesiest army I’ve ever seen, and it was a loss to a single-health Q9. I feel disgust every time I think about it. Frankly, that might be what spites me, but I’m still very suspicious of how rankings ended up. I played the last place finisher in the last round when I was 2-1? Why?? Very frustrating. I know this is not a very sportsmanlike attitude to have, especially for a tabletop game. But as a TO, a player, and a generally competitive person, I feel I should still be allowed to voice my complaints, as petty as they may be.

Raelin made this matchup pretty easy. Nilfheim was able to swoop in within range of her aura and start taking shots at the startzone, taking out Q10, putting a wound on Zetacron, and killing a few Greenscales. It then took Charos and the Greenscales a long time to kill Nilf. They did manage to get through the Iron Golem as well, but the endgame came down to Charos trying to chomp Raelin while the Marro Warriors fired from height, and eventually the big beasty fell.

UGH. The only thing stopping him from taking the Marro Warriors instead of MBS was the 11 figure limit. I opened with Zetacron and hit a 3/3 from height into Raelin-backed Q9. Unfortunately, Q9 blocked 3 of those 6 hits, and those were the only wounds he took all game. Zetacron fell to the rats, but Nilfheim came in and cleaned them out while killing Raelin and damaging my opponent’s Nilf enough that it was an easy kill for my Hydra. The Iron Golem tried to get to Q9 who was blocked by the last two rats, but Me-Burq-Sa came in and rolled a 4/4 on an attack and a 3/4 the next, which the Iron Golem couldn’t handle out of Raelin’s aura. The Hydra was too far away to stop Q9 from running onto the 2-hex height by his start zone, and got taken out way too easily with the Queglix gun while also producing 0 offense. The MWs also couldn’t finish it off, and even though Raelin also got two heighted attacks, nothing could bring him down. One of the top 5 most frustrating games I’ve ever played, and I still fume thinking about it. There’s no reason that Q9 should have survived that many attacks of three and four with a single life left, but somehow he did. I wouldn’t have played it any differently either, every one of my pieces went perfectly to counter his, and yet, Q9 lived on. Skill-based my ass.

Our first in-person meeting was pretty one-sided, with another Zetacron 3/3 into Mimring only rolling 1 shield in Raelin’s aura. Brutal. With his range mostly gone, he had to run Ice Trolls into Nilf and Fen Hydra tag teaming them. Krug did some work but it wasn’t enough, and the Marro Warriors cleaned up the arrow gruts in the meantime. I didn’t play super clinically, but I didn’t need to. It would’ve gone much differently without that Zetacron one-shot.

This game was very close. The Raelin auras+range space clashed right in the center of the map, and it pretty much game down to who got the better rolls, although I was able to nab Kelda with Nilfheim before he was. That sealed the deal, even though it came down to Marro Warriors vs a full health Fen hydra at the end.

My first ever hosted tournament, and it went very well, both in terms of running the event and in terms of how the elementals played. I didn’t keep a good record of this tournament, so these will be the spottiest battle reports and results I have. But, it was a great day, the start of a good relationship with Mana, and the start of a small community of Heroscapers in Lincoln.

This was a really fun use of the 19-figure limit. This is an interesting matchup and I’m really not sure how it plays out with a more experience player. But my opponent had limited knowledge of the Firestorm, and so the vipers fell before I needed to revive an elemental.

Also a really interesting use of the figure limit. We also played on a snow map, which I was pretty worried about for the Ice Elemental. Fortunately, I only lost 1 Fire to the Ice Spikes before getting super hot (pun intended) with the flames. Got lucky my opponent also had little experience with Kurrok, because the PKs kept running to take out the fires instead of swarming Kurrok.

This army won the tournament, and deservedly so. With Raelin banned, this seemed like the strongest version of Quahon/Spiders for a newer player (this was a pretty new ‘scaper who I made the army for). Even if Quahon goes down, Kozil is such a beast. However, in this game, it didn’t matter. Quahon and the spiders totally crushed me. This is the definition of a hard counter, even though Quahon isn’t specifically designed to take out Kurrok, it’s just a really good army. I didn’t stand a chance.

I don’t hate the choice of Redcoats if Sir Gilbert isn’t there and Isamu is. Unfortunately, Thorgrim doesn’t really help against the Firestorm rolls, and I was rolling hot again. It got pretty close but the Marvel/fortress map really helped protect Kurrok against Redcoat sightlines, and the Fire Elementals gobbled up the knights. Good way to end the tournament.

OHS Season 48 (June-August 2022)

I really thought this army would do better. Or maybe I thought I’d play this army better. Either way, the Glad/Blasts would really do better with no figure restrictions. I don’t think the 1:1 army is stronger, but I just struggled to come up with an army for this one. I retrospect, I think Nilfheim/Greenscales/Raelin would have dominated with the season 49 hindsight. But, overall a perfectly average performance.

This loss didn’t feel good. The glads should’ve done much better against the elves. To vegie’s credit, He podded up the elves perfectly so that Arkmer blocked both road entrances to the elves. I also debated heavily about opening with the Krav, and that was probably the smarter move. But the salt in the wound was Morsbane blasting a full health Laglor out of the game with a nat 20 as he was working his way through the Jordawn and Ulginesh. Ouch.

I definitely underestimated Zogross going in. This time, I opened with the Krav to try to snipe Raelin, and it worked even with jungle adjacent to the start zone. Van Nessing was a real pain, taking out a Krav with his double turn getting him adjacent. The glad/blasts tried to grind their way through the greenscales, which should have been a good matchup, but Zogross’ defense held so strong, and I never got the height that the blastatrons need.

Only real win of the tournament. The slow speed of the monarchs and the movement bonding let me get essentially all 16 of my ‘trons on the height in the middle of the map and ping from range. I started with the runners and ignored the Monarch until I was able to get huge attacks off with a full glad swarm. Sir Heroscape upgraded one sentinel to a monarch and the last runner to a sentinel, but I easily killed the runner respawn and took down the sentinel as well, and the monarch, consistently killing glads, couldn’t do it at a fast enough pace at that point.

OHS Season 47 (April-June 2022)

After that last tournament, I was ready for a good showing, and a finals appearance definitely made a point. At the time, I was just a big fan of Heracles, and I thought that the Varkaanan made for some interesting draft/counterdraft problems. I’m still a huge fan of Heracles in any “bring XX play X” format. He is currently and probably will remain one of my favorite VC figures. His versatility even when matching up versus all small/medium figures is so powerful. Stingers as backup is just icing on the cake. I would’ve really liked to take home a championship title in my second season ever, but it was not to be. This tournament also allowed me to create the best army names I’ve ever created: “Stinger? I Hardly Know Her” and “There Are Two Wolves Inside of You. Seek Medical Attention.”

Dok picked first and went with the Heracles/Stingers. It made sense; at the time, I also thought that army into the Varks was an auto-win. Even after some pretty solid plays with the Varks, Heracles demolished what was left, although the Darkclaws put a fair amount of wounds on him. Marcu was the one to actually save the day. It’s so fascinating how a 20 point figure completely renders all powers on a 200 point figure’s card useless. Despite a betrayal and a good beating from Heracles, Marcu got in a huge attack at the buzzer to win.

Cleon picked first and picked the Heracles/Stingers build. Despite a win against it with my Varkaanan, I felt pretty unsure still, and picked cleon’s gladiators. It…did not go well. Crixus blanked too many times, and I had to focus too much on Heracles (lava map, his strongest map type) while the stingers blasted away. Spartacus was too little developed to help. Isamu managed about 8 vanishes in a row, but it wasn’t quite enough.

I got to pick first, and it was an easy choice with all the other armies containing large figures (although I do think Braxas is actually a swingy but passable huge counter to Heracles, same as Grimnak). But quozl went with the Varks, and the stingers managed to take care of business despite a jungle/shadow map. Heracles didn’t have too much cleanup to do.

I chose first and picked Heracles/stingers. Grey waves went with the only viable options, the Varks. Kelda was on the map, so Grey Waves attacked Marcu with his turn 1 Greyspears, then flew Marcu over to burn the glyph. It was a pretty solid play, and probably the only way to pull out a win. It did let me develop stingers onto height and onto the Valda glyph, and it was just a constant rush from there. Heracles came in for cleanup once I dropped below a squad of stingers, but he only took two wounds before finishing off the Varks.

Dysole picked first and chose Heracles/stingers, so of course I had to go with Varks. I opened extremely aggressively with Swift to Greys, and Greys to Quickblades twice. That let me pound multiple attacks of four into the stingers from range while the other units just engaged to tie them up. The defense held long enough that the Quickblades/Darkclaws combo managed to take out Heracles before Marcu had to get involved.

I chose first and went with Heracles/stingers. I was fully expecting Varks, but Megasilver went with the Death Chasers build. Deathchasers with shadow and Nerak is pretty scary, and he did a good job of keeping my stingers from being able to hit Nerak. Fortunately, the stingers themselves were on fire thanks to double-hex height next to the start zone, making the position pretty unassailable. I was happy to trade stingers 1/1 for death chasers, as that’s an easy endgame win for Heracles. As icing on the cake, they managed to take out the ogre pulverizer thanks to some absolutely atrocious offense rolls from the ogre. As it happened, my opponent conceded with 6 stingers and a full health Heracles on the board vs his full health Nerak, Me-Burq-Sa, and two death chasers.

Cleon won the dice off but actually deferred to me, so I went with Heracles and the Varks, since it seemed like the most consistent winning chance. Cleon played the Varks like a violin, getting perfect engagement opportunities. The move glyph wasn’t enough to keep the stinger offense flowing. The switch to Heracles was the right move. He tore through the Varks with incredible rolls and taking 6 wounds. Unfortunately, that’s where the offense ended. Two 2/6 rolls from Heracles only brought Marcu down to half health before a 3/4 from Marcu took down Heracles rolling 5 defense. I tried to position the stinger properly but failed, and a 1/4 went through to end the game. Super disappointing.

My first ever competitive Heroscape event. Also my first ever competitive online event. Ah, I was so young then. I was barely equipped to survive a normal Delta event, much less a complex, multi-format event like this. But, I always learn more when I lose than when I win, and boy did I lose badly. However, the friendliness and humor of my competitors meant I didn’t get discouraged. Quite the opposite, this gave me a taste for more, and I’ve been playing as much competitive Heroscape as I can ever since. This truly is the best community.

Round 1 was the Heat of Battle format. I was one of the first to test out the Amberhive Protectors in a competitive game, and probably one of the last. Chris got the dice-off win to either place first or go first, of which he chose to go first, and that basically decided the game. He got 7 bee kills in the first turn of the game, which was devastating. Cyprien had a few opportunities to ice Raelin which might have swung the game (and so did Sujoah), but after several failed attempts, Grimnak promptly chomped him on the first try. It took a full five turns to kill Raelin, and at that point the game was over. Completely and utterly crushed, and it opened my eyes to the power of Kuthnak.

Round 2 was the Control Points format. This one was closer, but the game still ended 5-0 on victory points despite Sujoah taking out Sir Gilbert in a single turn with powerful Poison Stings. At this time I really had no grasp of concepts like board control, variance, positioning, etc. I also don’t think I really understood the control points format very well. I would’ve played this a lot more conservatively in retrospect, but the knights army was so strong into my build anyway that it probably wouldn’t have mattered how expertly I played it.

This loss hurt. This was the Assassination format. I picked Racheim, guild picked Sujoah for our targets. I opened mostly Amberhive twice to get to the move glyph and choke up points from the goblins, then went pure Cyprien from there. Unfortunately, Cyprien’s offense stalled for the third game in a row and only managed to deal a few wounds to Racheim while having to kill Goblins along the way to life drain. I finally went for it with Sujoah, knowing that one good poison sting, or even 1 wound plus a lucky poison roll would do it, Racheim blocked the attack and then proceeded to go 9/9 with his triple attack, killing Sujoah in a single turn. Absolutely brutal and pretty disappointing.

The last format of the tournament was the Treasure Quest format. My opponent opened with Nicholas, but failed the first glyph trap and hit a wound. That pinned him down while the Amberhives got situated, and Sujoah managed to go on another poison sting rampaged that, combined with a bee sacrifice, killed Nicholas. Then the momentum totally shifted. Kon-Tar-Na and Wo-Sa-Ga have some good offense, but the bees normal attacks were killing Nagrubs faster than they could heal, and Sujoah also took down Wo-Sa-Ga pretty efficiently. Ended up just clearing out the board, as Treasure Quest games usually end up. Was happy to not have my first tournament be winless, and overall pretty happy with how the Amberhive/Sujoah combo played this game.
