Blood-bound Draft - Alternate Format

This is an idea I’ve had bouncing around in my head for a new format that is similar to Reverse Draft, but with a twist.

  • Each player submits one army of between 450 and 550 points, and between 7 and 20 figures. Army submissions may have more than 20 figures, but no more than 20 can be placed at the start of the game. VC Allowed, no Marvel. Standard 24-hex startzone restrictions apply when placing your army.
  • There is a dice-off at the beginning of the game. The winner of the dice-off chooses whether to make the first army selection, or defer the opening choice to their opponent.
  • For the opening army selection, a player selects one of the two armies to play (their army or their opponent's army).
  • The player who did not select an army has two choices:
  • Let their opponent play the chosen army, and take the other army.
  • Make a counter-offer for the chosen army. This is done by bidding up to three wound markers.
  • Continue the counter-offer process until one player decides to take the other army (with all figures available) instead of increasing their bid.
  • After one player has decided not to increase their bid, the player who won the bid must assign all of their bid wound markers to army cards in their army. Instead of assigning a wound marker to an army card, the player may choose to remove a squad figure from their army. Once an army card has received a number of wound markers equal to the Life number on the army card, remove that figure from the army.
This format was inspired by a similar method used to balance matchups in the CCG Keyforge. I also based the structure of the format on the rules for Reverse Draft found here: https://www.heroscapers.com/communit...ad.php?t=52279.

Despite their similarities, I think the Blood-bound Draft improves Reverse Draft in two ways. First, it eliminates the need for mathematically calculating partial card point totals during the bidding process, which should make the bidding process faster and more intuitive. Secondly, it provides the option of placing starting wounds on heroes, whereas in Reverse Draft heroes must be removed entirely. This makes hero-based armies much more viable in the format.

This format would present a few unique changes to the meta. Armies with figures like Azazel, Krug, or Evar become much stronger, as these figures don’t mind beginning the game with wounds nearly as much. Figures with healing powers also become more effective. This could be minimized by adding a rule stating that “starting wound markers cannot be removed from an army card” and using pennies or something to differentiate between bid wounds and normal wounds. However, I’m not sure this rule would be necessary and would want to see how the meta evolved without it before suggesting that it be implemented.
