On my customs when I want to armored skin that was tougher than 1 automatic shield, I did 1 extra defense die plus 1 automatic shield. I've made over 160 customs now, and playtested at least 30 of them so far. It's true, 2 automatic shields is pretty tough to get through especially with 7 life.
Oh, and if you use the Helvetica Neue Lite Condensed 47 font, you can fit more on there. That's the same font used on the official cards. The downside is that it isn't free. If you don't have access to it through work or something, I think it's $20-25 to purchase. It also comes on a collection of fonts called the LinoType Gold Edition 1.7, but I'm not sure how much that costs.
