For anything that says "space" and refers to any figure (there are almost certainly placement powers that do so elsewhere) I assume for double spaced figures that it means spaces rather than space. Otherwise we'd have to say "space or spaces" for every power that affects anything bigger than medium.
Edit: Does seem like a mighty powerful mallet, though, from a thematic angle. C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.
