I'm not a part of this Pod, but I also like the idea of starting at 5 defense and letting Combined Heat only boost their attack by +1 each, for what it's worth. It's simple but quite thematic.

I am concerned about these guys being potentially better at the Kozuke's job as shock troops with their much better defense and consistently high movement (plus being a little cheaper), but the need to gang up on one target might compensate for the Kozuke's weakness to range and Samurai synergies. I'll try to run some tests to see how they feel in comparison to the Kozuke once they're ready for Testing again.

That's a good point RE Kozuke. I think we can balance it though. There's room for more than one shock troop.

For sure. My concern mostly stems from the fact that we're treading a similar ground to the Kozuke's main niche, and they have very deep flaws baked into their design (3 defense is the big one, but there's also them being slower than the other Samurai until they can engage).

There's definitely room to balance it, but I wouldn't want to see the Ukushisa be a clearly superior choice to the Kozuke in most situations that they'd be drafted in. It's just something to keep in mind as we continue to test.

It's certainly worth watching, I'd kind of forgotten about the Kozuke. For what it's worth though, the Kozuke get synergies whilst the Ukushisa barely get anything. On top of that it's a lot harder for the Ukushisa to get to the same attack and will have to be clumped together. The Kozuke have a bit more freedom. Just on paper, if the Ukushisa's defense goes up to 5, I can see them being a bit higher.

The Kozukes are an apt comparison, and definitely a potentially problematic one. I suspect the pack nature is going to make them play differently, though. While they have stronger defense, their desire to clump up makes them more vulnerable to specials as well as less likely to claim height. Also, losing figures is more hurtful than for Kozuke, as it not only lowers the number of attacks but their strength as well.
