I'd recommend not having an abscess under any tooth, but particularly the 2nd to last molar.

I went to the dentist yesterday because I had a filling that breaking off. A special light tool put on my tooth showed it had minor cracks and the x-ray showed a big abscess under the roots, into the jaw.

It had been aching off and on for about a year, but mostly after I'd eat some meat that felt like a little got caught between the back two teeth. It would ache for a few days and be done. I don't eat a lot of meat, especially since my daughters turned vegetarian, so it didn't come up as often as for others who eat meat regularly, particularly chicken.

So anyway the dentist said that for whatever reason that may have irritated the abscess but then it would release pressure and not hurt for awhile. But basically, an abscess is a gap/hole that gets filled with bad stuff.

So I told him to pull that mother.

Lots of shots and a lot of him using every tool in his toobox later, nearly an hour working on it, he had it out. Had to come out in pieces since it was cracked. Then he had to scrape and clean out the hole in my jaw, that had ick oozing out of it after getting the tooth out.

Then he packed 1cc (usually only uses 1/2cc) of this gritty protein stuff to help act as a scaffold for my bone to grow back together. This material will make it so there will be a better foundation later when he drills a hole in it to glue a metal peg in there to anchor a new fake tooth. After the protein stuff, he put some medicated gauze over it and 4 stitches.

Go back in a couple weeks to get stitches out and x-rays. Then 8 weeks later for more x-rays and 12 weeks again to see how the bone is growing. All told, it may be an 8 month process.

Ih, and to add insult to injury, last night I was eating some Moose Tracks ice cream and felt something hard that wasn't chocolate or whatever. I pull out the crown that I had covering my root canal on the right side of my mouth. It was also the second to last molar on the bottom. So now I have an appointment next Tuesday to get that cemented back on.

As Bats would say, "oye!"

Soft foods and Tylenol for awhile, and antibiotics and some steroids just for kicks
