OK, to a certain degree I agree with Liam (please punch me in the face). Pre-planned teams do allow players to maximize team synergy. Remove that synergy, and you've got two armies doing two things, and maybe they help each other and maybe they don't. That's true, and I won't say it's not.

But I don't care. I like the idea of random teams because I think it will make the day more fun and generally interactive. You will have to sit down with your new partner before every match and figure out what strengths and weaknesses you face that next battle. You'll have to change your strategy every game to compensate or augment your allies, and to take advantage of lacks of synergy in your opponents. You'll have to match your forces against your most likely target, and that will change every round.

Of course, you could get saddled with some incompetent boob who brings your average down, and that would suck. I would not like to be sitting down and realize that my partner's army is almost pre-built to lose, and I'm going to be pulling his weight.

But I still don't care. I like random partners because it sounds fun, and I'll get to play with three times as many people that day.

Looking at how Velenne organized this, it seems that deciding if Marvel will be used needs to be done first, as that affects most of the other decisions.

Should there be a new thread for this tournament with, dare I say, a poll?

And Liam, it's all jokes with Imax, I'm sure. I mean Velenne tried to run me over with his truck in the parking lot after the last tournament, and I'm almost sure that was a joke.

As crazy as this may sound, why does it necessarily have to be a tournament? Why can't it just be a very large gathering of Heroscape fans that want to get in some games?

I realize that the logistics of it all would be impossible, but it would be nice to just get in a few (or many) Heroscape games with fans who love the game. Maybe set up a few larger maps, some Marvel maps, some tournament maps, some whatever maps and people just play. No record keeping, just playing and having fun.

Not complaining, just wishful thinking more than anything...almost a mini Heroscape Con...

I remember that for awhile there we were having almost monthly gathering at someplace or another to do just that UPC. Many times it was at someone's house! I'd certainly like to get back to that! But the tournament schedule was something that was created on top of the gatherings.

UPC, I'd love to see a tournament held on one long serpent-like map that could handle 20 games at once.

As for no tourney...I wouldn't mind it, but the prize table sure is fun.

And as for my votes...

Well I suggested the random partner idea so I won't back off of that now.

I say no Marvel unless it's an all Marvel tourney.

Points wise I'd say 300 per army with teams maxed at 600.

I agree, I miss "Scape" night / day that we used to have approx. once a month or so, is what I enjoy more then tourney's. I know that for the last several months, my schedule has been VERY packed, whether it is work, kids, family, and yes, occasional WoW (not as much as I would like), it has stretched me to the max, just to keep up with the events posts for DFW, much less trying to get in some game time on a weekend, or even weekday evening.

I hope someone does takes point on coordinating the weekend get togeathers, I know I would try my best to hit them, but with the holidays right around the corner, and currently the busiest I have ever been with work, I am not sure that I would be able to make it, but would try REALLY hard, or at least catch the kids so lilwis can get some gaming in.

About 70% of the time I can meet up on Saturdays. Sundays are a day reserved for football. Mondays and Tuesdays are out due to Cub Scouts and PTA. Most evenings during the week I go to bed around 9:30pm so I don't drive far during the week....but all that said....I make every effort to go to Friday and Saturday events. And I will continue to do so.

I think what we should do is come up with a tentative monthly get together at some place of group agreement. Just pick a weekend (like the 1st weekend of every month) and a location. For my money Gen X Comics is the place to go. They are certainly friendly to us, they sell tons of cool games, and they are fairly central for everyone.

I have been thinking through some possible tournament variants trying to come up with something new and a bit different.

A draft game has long been thought of as not possible in a tournament setting. So I might be a little ambitious in my thoughts, but this is something I think has some merit and would be fun.

A two pack draft tournament.

Each player brings the figures and cards from either two expansion packs or a single master set.(SOTM or ROTV) Single flag bearers or promo figures would count as an expansion. (so one player might bring ROTV and the other player might bring Heroes of Bleakwood and Gruts)

Both players layout what they brought and then they draft to the selected point amount (say 400-450) by normal draft rules.

This would add game time because of the draft but the pool would be small and the decisions much quicker. So maybe 15 minutes draft time and 45 minutes game time. If the points values are kept smallish it could work. We could use small sand timers for drafting, but really with few units to choose from it should go pretty quick.

- you play a different army each time
- introduces draft strategy to a tournament setting
- swarm armies will be very hard to come by
- you could end up losing to the figures you brought.

Just the beginning stages of thought but something that I think could be refined enough to give it a go.

It would be possible that the player bring the same things or that one or both players are not able to draft to the full point total. That would only add strategy to the draft.

A must read for all 'Scapers!

R˙chean, I've been considering formats that allow some degree of drafting as well. One idea I had was to have each player bring, say, 1000 points of units to the table then draft from their own pool a 500 point army. You don't get to draft from the figs your opponent brought (no draft to deny) but you do get to counter draft your army in response to his choices. This would also allow you to bring some more specialist units to the table (like Saylind or Deadeye, for instance) that you might not otherwise include in a fixed tournament army.

And non-tournament game days are great. Most of our events here in Seattle are regular game days. We only run tournaments every four to six months.
