Classic X-Men is a fairly strong counter to Mastermind with Jean Grey and Cyclops. That doesn't mean you can't try it, but be aware that results may not be typical.

I think it may be best to build armies to play against Mastermind, IMO.

I've found that even when the d20 has not been great, the Wrecking Crew is still solid at 800 points when played effectively. It is not hard to set up Bulldozer for a 2 auto skull attack, Piledriver can really put a hurting on non-SS figures with a quickness, and all of them have enough defense & life to hang in their a while. Once the d20 does go off, look out. The F4 can be a bit swingy because of the d20 but I still find they are a great army to test against. Just make a note of it in the test results if the d20 is particularly bad and you only can activate Reed 3 times in a row. When the d20 is at least average or better, they have so many different tools at their disposal that it can really put another army to the test.

Knocked out a couple games with Mastermind today. I steered clear of using other units in reevaluation (much as I wanted to play Mastermind+Indigo-1+War Machine+Ms. Marvel), and, as expected, I still found him really strong:

Psychic Camouflage: Extremely Useful.

Pretty simple play here. Stewart took his pod to one of the heights on the map and used Cable’s rang and Mastermind’s Psychic Camo to force the other army to come to them. Valkyrie was the first target and she was eventually destroyed, but by that time it was too late for the Kree. Cable/Mastermind hit hard and fast.

Cable had a few big rolls and Army One won Initiative in the first four rounds, so luck was certainly not with the Kree, but it was just never close.

R5T2: Mastermind unwounded, Cable with 1/5 wounds, Green Lantern with 1/4 wound and 2/3 markers.

Hoo boy was this bad. Archangel moved in first for the Mutants and was almost immediately KO’d. All it took was 2 attacks from Cable at the end of the first round to end him. After that, Deadpool made it in and dealt a wound to Valkyrie, but was killed before he could do any more. Blink tried to move with Deadpool and and use her Javelin to break up the pod, but Stewart’s Shield Strike prevented her from doing any damage. Iceman also fell in a single attack, leaving Professor X alone. He was able to deal a wound to Mastermind, but couldn’t withstand the onslaught of Mastermind/Cable.

R3T6: Mastermind with 1/4 wounds, Cable unwounded, Valkyrie with 2/7 wounds (one from Lava Field), GL unwounded with 1/3 markers.

What do you think of making Psychic Camoflauge only work on Mastermind, not adjacent figures?

He certainly wouldn't be broken with pods that way. It would... change the design quite a lot. I think he would still have some use as a Mutant OM flex, though.

Alternatively, we could change it to work only with 1-2 figures and/or only against normal attacks.

As the one playing the Kree side, I wanted to emphasize this point. Mastermind's ability, when protected by Valkyrie, made me feel like the game was lost before it started.

Hmm, to my memory he does only use it for himself in the comics, but then again I haven't read much with him in it. However, as TB said, that'd be a very drastic change for the design.

I think my favorite tweak would be to switch it so that it only blocks non-adjacent normal attacks; same idea, but much less powerful. My .
