Re: Thoughts on Organ Donation

This is just my opinion and I respect everybody's views on the matter, but I'm a card carrying organ donor and proud of it. If I can save somebody's life after I'm dead than why wouldn't I?

I think that example would be pretty rare if it happened at all, but what if the person you saved was evil and after you saved them they were so grateful they turned over a new leaf and did nothing but good. You may even be saving someone who finds the cure for cancer.

Re: Thoughts on Organ Donation

A while ago in the UK there was some debate around switching the default option. That is, you would be considered an organ donor unless you explicitly opt out of the system. I thought this was a great idea, but as far as I know it never went anywhere.

Re: Thoughts on Organ Donation

I'd be game for that too, since most people don't do it simply because they don't even think about it. It's just as easy to refuse, it's just that you would sign the back of your card to say I don't want to be a donor instead of "I do".

Now through May 28th, the Louisville region is in desperate need of platelets - call the Red Cross if you are interested in donating!

Re: Thoughts on Organ Donation

Unless someone is Jewish or has other religious predispositions, it's a great thing to do. Even if you are religious, perhaps it's the last 'good deed' that you can do.

Unfortunately, with my luck, someone would get my kidney and their dice rolls from that point forward would be all blanks...

Anyhow, I have a good friend that is alive today due to an organ donation, so the way I see it, there's no real down side. I'm an organ donor (or rather, will be posthumously) but if my daughters or wife needed something, they could hack it out of me that night.

I was famous, once...

It's a bit trickier than that in the UK. There is no universal ID scheme. (Random aside: it's odd that everyone accepts what's already in place so easily---in the UK there's massive oppostion to introducing a universal ID scheme whereas in the US, which is much more inclined to rank "individualism" over "socialism" (interpreted broadly) there is no dissent to the carrying and renewing of driving licences.) To be an organ donor in the UK you have to fill in a separate organ donation card and carry that around. Not tricky, but neither is it something you can just do without making an effort.

(Disclaimer: information in this post is five years old; things might have changed.)

Re: Thoughts on Organ Donation

Yeah, it's just on the back of at least KY driver's license's. I'm not sure if all states do that or what, but the practice is common I know.

It's on the back of VT ones too.

This wouldn't work as a fix for the UK though because people don't tend to carry their licences around. Photo licences were only introduced a few years ago and they don't need renewing until you are aged 70 (I got myself a British photo licence for the sole reason of buying booze in the US).

Re: Thoughts on Organ Donation

I want to sign up for organ donation. If I'm dead, I don't be needing my organs.

BTW, is it possible to sign up for organ donation when you get your permit that allows you to drive with a parent?

Dude, you got me all wrong! I am not upset that you would donate but the prospect that some one might harvest my organs against my will just ticks me off. Modern Medicine has done wonderfull things for the human race although some ghastly and disturbing practices are being furthered as well. The pregnant man is one that comes to mind. Yes he is very happy but I feel that what he has done to himself is very unnatural and wrong.

Re: Thoughts on Organ Donation

Frankenstein* complex much?

I don't see how a transgendered person choosing to try and change his/her gender is related to organ donation. Two completely different things.

*I'm not comparing transgendered people to the frankenstein monster. If someone wants to change their gender and it makes them happy, good for them.

The idea of removing part of it after I have died, and grafting it onto another person just creeps me the hell out...
But what if someone dies in a fire and their remains are nothing but ashes? Since their physical body is destroyed, would they have less of a soul or something? What about amputees?

See, my problem is this. Who said anything about having your organs donated against your will? This isn't even being brought up. It's a boogeyman scare tactic. No one is "harvesting" (a very biased word in this situation) organs illegally or against peoples will. This just isn't happening nor is anyone saying it should.

Even if this isn't happening I am never going to feel obliged or guilted into donating my organs. They are mine and I'm going to pass on with all of them. I do believe that my soul and my body are connected and that peice mealing them out removes peices of your soul. I'm staying intact and if you wish to spread the love then groovey.

Oh yeah, biased smiased...
