Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
Kinda agree with Mr N. This trope is something you see across all sorts of superpower media. Green Lanterns, Iron Man, etc.... all have used this at some point. Kryptonians feel pretty arbitrary. I'd almost rather keep it factional and be a cool bonus upgrade for the DBZ guys rather than just throw something else in to try to get it to at least 3 choices.
I absolutely love the idea, but I guess I wish there was a bit more of a minigame involved rather than just a d20 rolloff, so there's some semblance of skill involved. Not sure I personally would want to draft something that has like a 45% chance of doing 4 unblockables to me (Don't check my math there) Spit balling real quick (not official wording): Start the Beam struggle with 12(?) combat dice in a pool (Or 14 if you're a challenger). Each player secretly chooses 0-12 dice in their pool, and then rolls them at the same time. Whoever rolls more skulls wins that round and moves the Struggle marker one space towards the opponents' side. After 6 rounds, the player with the Struggle marker furthest from them wins the struggle. If the Struggle Marker moves to a final space on the Beam Struggle Card, the player with the Struggle marker furthest from them immediately wins the struggle. Roll 4 unblockable dice against the losing figure. This way there's a bit of mind games/push your luck mechanics going on. You can't blow all of your dice on the first round since you'll roll 0 dice the rest of the rounds and will almost assuredly lose then, and you still have the random chance of actually rolling the skulls. Obviously wordier and more complex, but it sounds like a more fun mini game than the d20 rolling, to me. Is the intent of my wording clear? (To me it is but want to make sure I'm conveying the same thing here). |

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
I understand Nobody's point more now and do agree actually.
I also think there's some merit to LP's suggested wording. |

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
I’m cool cutting out Kryptonians. I agree that if the list gets too long, it loses some elegance. Kaiju I can go either way with, so whatever people prefer there. I just want Challengers included.
Balance-wise, I personally view this as more of a fun theme thing than anything strictly competitive. My thought is, there has to be a back-and-forth for this to feel like a beam struggle. If you know you’re going to win, it doesn’t feel right - and I recognize that doesn’t make for a very good competitive design! In my practice games, I originally had the Challenger boost at +4, and that was too much of an easy win for the Challenger. I’m not entirely opposed to LP’s minigame suggestion, but that also feels like too much to me. Beam struggles aren’t really a strategic thing in-universe, so I don’t really like making it into a mind game. I do like your wording tweaks, though. |

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
I haven't seen the show at all, but in other instances of this trope, there's plenty of "pushing" which I think the secret dice pool represent. Try to goad them into pushing, and them finish them with a bigger push. Something like that.
Basically like I said I'd probably just never draft this if there's a chance it'll bite me in the butt. If we turned it into a mini-game then you could get a bit more skilled at it on top of the Challenger bonus. But if we want to stick to a simple d20 roll-off, I think this would be better served as a scenario or optional rule for DBZ games. |

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
That’s not really how bean struggles are portrayed in DBZ. Like, DBZ isn’t a well written show by any means. It involves huge unearned power ups, constant retcons, and bizarre situations/characters. Beam struggles are won because the heroes refuse to give up even when outmatched, not because of tactics or anything besides straight up power level. Goku is canonically a complete idiot.
And I think there has to be a chance to lose for this to be thematic. You already have a big chance to win as-is (it’s a 10% boost on the opponent for every roll, which adds up!). And we test it to make sure that stays true, it’s going to be a balance between making it worth drafting and making it a fun back and forth, and that’s the feedback I think the initial and public testing should target. Don’t forget that on a win, Goku or Godzilla both ignore a special attack and inflict 4 unblockables on the attacker - that’s a huge swing and a very powerful boost to powerful designs. No matter what mechanics you add to it, no matter how reliable the win, that’s going to be a nightmare to balance. |

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
I'm good either way. Kryptonians just sprang to mind because they all reliably shoot beams out of their eyes. No worries if they're cut, though.
yea C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
I guess bottom line is that a d20 rolloff, even with a +2, just is kinda boring. But if you're set, you're set. I've said my piece and don't need to keep bogging you down!

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
I think it's a mini-game either way. My worry is it'll go back and forth forever before moving to one side, so if it's starting to feel that way, I'd increase the boost beyond +2 at that point (in initial testing).

Re: The Book of Beam Struggle Story (vote for initial)
I removed Kryptonians and cleaned up the wording a bit.
The beam struggle potentially going on forever is definitely something I want to watch out for. That's part of the reason I limited it to twice per game. |
