OUTER SPACE TERRAIN RULES

Outer Space Terrain rules include rules for a new terrain type called Cosmos spaces. Outer Space Terrain rules should be used with the Cosmic Space Mat and other Outer Space battlefields, as specified in their map threads.

Cosmos Spaces

Cosmos spaces are 0 height.

When a non-flying figure enters a Cosmos Space during their normal movement they can only move in a straight line and must continue moving in this manner until one of the following is true:

• all of their available movement is used,
• they are adjacent to a space of a different terrain type, or
• they cannot legally occupy the next space.

Exposure Damage

At the end of each round, roll one unblockable attack die for exposure damage against each figure you control occupying a Cosmos space that has at least one Wound and that is not a Construct, Destructible Object, or Event Hero. If the figure has Super Strength, it receives a wound on a blank instead of a skull.

- Give a brief preview. The second Annihilation Wave is heading towards Earth's Solar System! A team of Guardians, including two members from Earth itself, are sent out to the edge of that system in an attempt to redirect that wave. Will they be able to force the Wave to pivot in a new direction, or will Earth soon be under the threat of invasion?

Tactical Game Impact of the Movement Rules: I made a small tweak to the movement rules (see above, change in red), requiring a figure to only be adjacent to a different terrain type to be able to change directions. As such a figure floating past an asteroid can reach out and use that solid body to pull themselves up onto it or push off in a new direction rather than requiring a figure to move onto the new terrain first before they can chance directions. It played much better this way as I was ricocheting off asteroids with my Invaders and it felt both fun and accurate.

When Annihilus lost the Cosmic Control Rod, I made sure to put it down out in space rather than on firm ground, that way anyone who went for it would not only be at low ground but also open to exposure damage. Then later Annihulus had only 1 life left and didn't think he could risk floating in open space, so he moved closer to the action on an Asteroid and that decision came back to bite him.

Exposure Damage to Team 2: 0/1 W to Thing, 1/1 W to Groot
Who won and how many wounds did they have? Rocket II w/1W and Groot w/3W's saved Earth from being invaded!

Recap: Iron Man did nothing for me here but die rather unspectacular, however Thing made up for that by rolling all skulls on his first attack of the game for a quick 3W on Annihilus, then scored another 3W hit with his second attack. Annihilus took out Thing though and regained his precious CCR. Rocket & Groot were back to back on an Asteroid fighting off a horde of Invaders that had surrounded them and it looked like it might have been anyone's game. Annihulus couldn't risk staying out in space though (he had 1 life left) and needed to be in a range of 4 to use the CCR, so he also moved onto the Asteroid with the rest thinking the Invaders solid defense would be a good screen. Oh how wrong he was, Rocket popped off an Invader sitting on HG with him, allowing Groot to move up to HG and attack Annihulus, which he did and took him down. That was the end as mopping up the remaining Invaders wasn't hard to do once Annihilus was gone. Rocket never got a chance to drop any of the bombs on the board, Annihilus and the Invaders always opted to use normal attacks on the other units first to deny him the free moves, and Annihulus figured he could use the CCR to give Rocket auto-wounds. Also no Invaders were ever respawned.
- Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes, with that one change to how the movement works.

Army Test 2

Give a brief preview. Red Skull has assembled a new team to help him out with his latest scheme, which involves taking over a communications satellite in low earth orbit. The X-Men are tipped off to his plans and send out a small team to stop that from happening. Both Red Skull and Jean Grey will be trying to toss wounded figures off the satellite and into space in an effort to maximize the exposure damage impact. Alternately they can both try to reposition their own allies if needed. Catwoman will try to lay out a line of Caltrops to serve as a wall that prevents access to Red Skull, while Weather Wizard will try to prevent ranged attacks. Map: Orbital Communications Satellite



Units: Red Skull (C3G), Catwoman II, Weather Wizard, Deathstroke (800) vs. Cyclopes, Jean Grey, Fantomex, Shadowcat II (800)

Tactical Game Impact of the Movement Rules: Jean Grey was the last one to leave the start zone, so Catwoman started throwing Caltrops out into space along the only two paths out. Before this plan worked though, the Cosmic Cube went flying and was placed in front of the Caltrops such that Jean could move out and safely end her turn on the Cube and not drift into the Caltrops. It was fun trying to figure out ways to use the space movement to your advantage and then ways to counter those moves. I turned the hex matt 90 degrees when making this map and it was more interesting that way. Non-flying figures leaving the SZ had to move out at an angle, which played a factor into how you moved your army out and into battle.

Exposure Damage to Team 2: Jean Grey 0/1 W.
Who won and how many wounds did they have? Deathstroke w/2W won.

Recap: Shadowcat carried Cyclopes up first, and then he blasted Weather Wizard while moving Fantomex up 4 spaces. From there Fantomex could move on to the middle of the Satelite and grabbed HG, from which he destroyed Weather Wizard. Red Skull only transferred one W from Weather Wizard to Cyclopes before losing the Cube and never regaining it. He did take out Cyclopes, but Fantomex was on a tear and took Red Skull out next. Catwoman grabbed the Cube, but never used it, then she was taken out by Fantomex too. The dice cooled off for Fantomex though and Deathstroke was able to use some caculated defense to take him down. He then took out Jean, and the final show down ran entirely too long with Shadowcat standing toe to toe with Deathstroke for a long ass time. Eventually she missed some phase rolls though and Deathstroke won the game. Having all OM's on him and healing back 3W's every round made it just too difficult for the X-men to take him out. The tossing people into space when wounded idea never came into play, which might have been why I kept forgetting about it. Both the Cube and Jean were non-factors in regards to figure placement in this one. Fantomex was just doing too much damage attacking from HG so he became the focus. The Space Mines Caltrop idea was utilized, but never resulted in any wounds or the stopping of figure movement.
-Does it pass, Yes or No? Yes, I did keep forgetting about rolling for the Exposure damage but I went back and made sure it was accounted for. I'm sure the more I play with the rules the easier it will to remember.
