funrun's Custom Armies *REVISED Black Knights of Wessex*
Please comment on anything below and check out my other customs threads in my signature.
"Black Knights of Wessex" I wanted to find a good use for the extra Knights of Weston leftover from the Knights & Swog Rider pack after painting Sir Hawthorne and Nerak replicas. Sir Hawthorne seemed like he needed a squad to follow him and make him more viable in an Utgar army, so I now have these guys created as a custom army. Discussion about the repainted figures is in my funrun's HS Fig Repaints thread. When Sir Hawthorne betrayed his brother Sir Denrick, these ex-Knights of Weston rallied behind Sir Hawthorne and wanted to be known as ex-Westons, as in "of Wess-ex" (with Wessex being an actual region in historical medieval England.) The Black Knights of Wessex feel so guilty about the betrayal of their fellow knights that they can never quite muster their usual attack strength when attacking other units who fight for the same general, Jandar, yet the other Utgar Champions thrive on the Knights' evil tendencies. These guys bond with Utgar Champions: Tornak, Nerak, Ornak, Grimnak, and Hawthorne and aren't as good at attacking anyone who follows the general they betrayed, which helps tie into the backstabbing storyline. Sweet combo army idea: 1. you put order marker 1 on Ornak and bond 2 heroes. 2. put order 2 on your support units so they can be wherever they need to be ("support units" being orcs that bond with other orcs.) 3. then you put order 3 on black knights to bond with Ornak to adjust where you want him to be for the next round, then move the black knights. |

I really like these knights. However, I would have it "any Knights who follow Jandar." Otherwise, they would feel guilty attacking Hawthorne.

Nice squad, FR! I really like them, simple and very thematic. Nice repaints, too.
I think you could possibly drop them to 80 or 75 points. Probably more like 80, though. Edit* just noticed the target images were missing. smallboxgames.com |

They sure should feel guilty about attacking Hawthorne, that's why I worded it as I did.
Thanks for letting me know about the hit zones jj, I got it added now. |

Funrun, that is a fantastic custom! It looks like it ought to be a Hasbro unit! Color me impressed. Great work.

I have made figures similar to these, though they had copper swords and finish as well as red shields. But I really like yours.

nice custom. it fits with Sir Hawthorne very well. both he and these knights are the only humans to follow Utgar so far. i like the bonding with any Utgar Champion as opposed to the Knights of Weston that bond with Human Champions. it gives a sub-human feel to them since the are evil enough to follow Utgar.
and like Hawthorne's "Stab in the Back", their "Backstabber's Guilt" is one of the few special powers that is a weakness instead of a strength. other than Hawthorne, i think so far Obsidian Guards is the only army card from Hasbro with an SP that is a pure weakness. comparing their points to the points of Knights of Weston, maybe 80 or 85 would be better. +1 move and especially +1 attack is significant but they do have an SP weakness and there are only 3 of them as compared to 4 Knights of Weston for just 70 points. but i don't do customs (not yet anyway) so i'm no expert on deciding point values. |

Both Denrick and Hawthorne aren't knights. They are human champions. The only figs that they would loose an attack die to would be the Knights of Weston (and most likely the upcoming Knights Templar).
I like the Utgar Champion Bonding ability but, not too keen on the Backstabber's Guilt ability. While it does an adequate job of representing their guilt, it doesn't do anything when they attack Denrick. I would guess that they would also feel a little guilty attacking their former leader. Having said that, I offer a rewording suggestion for Backstabber's Guilt... Backstabber's Guilt Black Knights of Wessex roll one less attack die when attacking a Knight. **************************** ...and a suggestion for a different ability that coveys their guilt of betraying their order and includes Denrick (and everybody else). Traitorous Melancoly Before attacking you must roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 1, the Black Knights of Wessex may not attack. If you roll a 2-6, subtract 2 from the Attack value on this card. If you roll a 20, the Black Knights of Wessex may attack one additional time. If you control Sir Hawthorne, add one to your die roll. The idea is that they sometimes have second thoughts about betraying their order and can't find the will to attack or they enter into a rage (kind of a link to Sir Hawthorne's Blind Rage SA). If you also control Sir Hawthorne (keeping with the theme), he bolsters their resolve, eliminating the chance that they won't attack and increasing the chance of an extra attack. I would also lower their move to 4 (they are wearing a lot of armor) and make the point cost 70 - 80. Kumiko is not impressed with your sculpt, either.
