Re: Official Wizards Feedback Thread - Take 2

I believe that the idea of the DnD set is to have a lower cost master set to draw new players into the game and get them buying boosters at $12+ a pop (Ka-Ching). The $40 barrier was probably too high for drawing players in, I suspect that the DnD set will be nearer to $25.

Edit: I can't stop laughing about Hogg's label "DnDBS"

I've been assuming that as well, since the DnD set has the same number of figures as the Marvel set and the box seems to be the exact same size as the Marvel set, which is different from the traditional MS box. It definitely seems to be following the Marvel model.

I'm figuring on seeing the Marvel pricing too, except that MSRP for Marvelscape was $29.99, not $25. It would be interesting if WotC set the D&D set lower, which they certainly could given the lower development costs of this set and the lack of licensing fees; it would be a rough indicator of how much those fees ended up getting passed on to the consumer.

As for the $39.99 MSRP of a master set being a barrier to new players, I'm not sure about that one. I know Heroscape was designed for the mass market (as opposed to the hobby market, which seems to easily accomodate games with $60+ starting costs), but are other games that much cheaper than Heroscape? I'm not too familiar with the average costs of mass market board games, but I would've thought they'd be in the $30-$40 range anyway.

Re: Official Wizards Feedback Thread - Take 2

I, for one, held off on buying it for years because although it looked pretty cool, all shiny on that Walmart shelf, 40 bucks seemed like a lot to drop without having a reasonably good assurance that it really was cool. Once I saw the game actually being played, I was sold instantly, and shortly thereafter went out and bought one of each master set. Of course I'm sorry now that I missed out on four years of playing the game, but such is life.

Fair enough - maybe it's because I live in one of the most expensive cities in the country, but $40 doesn't seem like too much for a master set. Heck, I've had lunches that cost more than that.

I didn't think it was too expensive after I saw my nephew get it for Chistmas of '05. I played a game with my nephew and brother in-law and then was hooked and bought a couple master sets at $40 each, then was on the expansion hunts.

However when Meijer had a clearance of master sets for like $10, then the $40/each seemed steep. Fortunately I snagged up 12 of those $10 master sets and after selling for cheap to fellow scapers back then and giving a couple as gifts, I ended up with 6 total for $120 (40, 40, 10, 10, 10, 10), for an average of $20/set. Not bad.

Depending on the price and economy (mine ), we'll see if or when I'll get the DnD set.

Re: Official Wizards Feedback Thread - Take 2

What I find humorous is that the initial 40$ investment is NOTHING compared to the overall long-term investement that you'll make once you're hooked.

Me, I look at the long-term aspect of games. I bought Space Hulk for 100$ and laughed on the way to the bank - I knew that 100$ would be a one-time shot. I've easily spent 10 times that on expansions, terrain, master sets and the whole 9, not to mention the vast expenditure on trades via shipping.

Most family board games, like Monopoly, Clue, and Scrabble, are only $10-$20 a piece, so the $40 adventure into a much more complicated board game (by comparison) is a big step from the perspective of the casual gamer entering into more serious board gaming.

It'd be like any one of us buying a $30 dvd based solely on the box art. Sure, to a film aficionado that film is a classic of some less well known genre and worth every penny, but to those of us who just go to the movies for a good time - it's something we would be awfully hesitant to buy.

Speak for yourself - I'm that film aficianado who would buy that $30 Criterion DVD. (Actually, that would be cheap for a Criterion DVD.) I guess that's why I don't see the $40 master set as a big deal.

Then you're the exception that proves the rule.

Seriously though, nearly anyone other than serious movie buffs would balk at Criterion prices - yes, it's the best version of a film money can buy without owning a movie theater, but outside of those already steeped in that culture, it would be a hard pill to swallow.

Thanks for keeping the USPS afloat

I agree that $10-20 is the mass market board game price, which is why I think that the DnD set is intended to try to crack into that range and get people hooked and spending 10 times that on expansions...that's what I ended up doing after I got hooked. So come join us all you nameless, Walmart shopping masses
