Table Recommendations
I tried the search engine but I couldn't find what I was looking for.
I'm in the market for a folding table to set up Heroscape on. I have some room but not alot. So what size table should I be looking for if I want to build the battlefields shown in the master sets? I also would want enough room for at least two people to sit comfortably (or reasonably so) and have the unit/army cards and other supplies on it. I was thinking at least 48 inches by 30 inches and was hoping I could get away with something not much bigger than that. I'm also considering getting two tables and putting them side by side if needed to get the right size. I think the battlefield can stay together as long as the tables are together. Am I right? Thanks for the help. Location: FL - Dade City |

Heroscape is a two-edged sword.
If your table is small, then you can only fit two people and a small-to-medium map, which means you probably only have about 1-2 people to 'Scape with. On the plus side, you probably don't need that much storage for your Heroscape stuff, so your garage can comfortably fit your car and your HS stuff. Plus your bank account is pretty fat at this point. You buy a large kitchen table. Now you can fit a couple of small-to-medium maps or a large map, plus your Heroscape network has probably increased to 4-5 other people. You find yourself buying a few plastic bins and tackle boxes at your favorite retail store and decide to downsize your car to a Honda Insight or Toyota Prius. Your saving is dwindling, but that's ok because you've started to work a second job as a pizza delivery boy. Soon the large kitchen table is replaced by two 6x12 monstrosities. You spend every waking moment building ginormous battlefield for your huge network of Heroscape buddies. You can no longer see the breaker panel on the wall of your garage because your wall of plastic bins, housing every last piece of terrain has been bricked up to cover it. Now, because of your new tables, Wall-O'-Plastic Bins, and the general need to fill your garage with HS addicts, you have shunned your car and now force it to spend the cold nights parked outside while you have all the fun. As for your savings, HA! You keep the account open, but only with the $5 required to maintain it. You have visited every last payday loan place to take out the max of $500 per loan, just so you can feed your frenzy. The worst thing is, the dice gods hate you and your record is 5-67. People tell you that you need to seek professional help and not from Hasbro. These are the confessions of a Heroscape addict... |

However, on the positive side... rolling all skulls with Maul... seeing your opponent whiff his defense dice for DeathWalker 9000... Frenzying 4 times on your first round's first order marker... rolling 20 with Runa twice... saving 2 elves from death... possessing your opponents Tor Kul Na and using him to take out his Q9... killing Cyprien and Sonya in one stroke... isn't all of that worth the collection calls and divorce threats?
Oh, and for advice about tables... just hang around the Hasbro booth during the last few minutes of GenCon. Environmentalists make great compost. |

Depends. At my house we have three different tables we use. We have a card table that is about 30"x30" and it works well for small games while not taking up house space. Usually only two play, but we've had three and sometimes four. The armies are usually really small by the time you get four people playing though. Then we have a medium fold-up picnic table that is about 60"x30" and it works well for long battlefields. Battles here are bigger, but because of the rectangular shape, they work best for two people. We have played four, but the two players on the long sides of the table get destroyed by the players on the ends. It works alright for two teams though. Then we have the big dining table. It's an oval and is about 42"x72" This is the fun table. Games get set up here and stay for days. Battles are epic and many people can play. The shape allows for a fairly fair battle in a free-for-all, but can be played in teams as well. Eating though, gets relocated to the living room.
I think shape can be just as important as size. Obviously a square or circular table will be better suited for group play, while a rectangular table makes a more interesting one on one battle. It also depends on how much stuff you have. We have two RotV, two castles, and one of each of the other terrain sets and it fills the big table nicely. It's also enough to make some truly extreme maps on the medium table, but is rarely all used on the small table. I would say 4-6 square feet per master set is sufficient. Jugger It's like football with swords or LARPing without the geeky stuff. In other words, it's awesomely perfect! |

I've got a couple of tables, so they're the ones I can comment on most competently.
The 30" x 30" card table I've got can be plenty of room for almost any map straight out of the RotV rule book, though I would recommend a couple of TV trays for cards and dice rolling. The 29" x 72" table I have folds in half for easy storage (takes up about as much room as that 30" square card table) and has a handle for easy portability. It's big enough to support two maps with room for cards and dice as long as we're not talking large to epic maps. Both tables can be bought at Target for pretty reasonable prices (under $50). And because they're cheaper tables you can buy more of them if you feel you need more space. Other than those I have a coffee table that I've laid a large piece of plywood over. I cheaply upholstered the board with a large sheet and a staple gun (though I did a good job if I do say so myself). That will hold two large maps with a little room for cards and dice, but mostly it's just what I do all my little HeroScape projects on. For stuff I know a bit less about, I'd have to say a ping-pong table would be the next best thing. It's got lots of room for maps, cards, dice, snacks, and whatever else you'd want to put on it as long as you're not trying to cover the whole thing. They also fold up so that they don't take up quite so much room when not in use, though I'd recommend you make sure the two halves are the same level when it's setup to avoid having crooked maps. |

I have a cover that we built for our pool table. It is an 8' by 4' and we hae had the entire tabe covered in a masive battle field. it may be a bit extreme if you are not looking to make massive maps but it works great for what we do.
Also if you can find the top to a 6 person card table it is the perfect size for close and bloody games. These are great to ba able to throw onto another table. |

I use three tables, which works for hosting gatherings of up to about eight people. Two of the tables are 48" x 24" and one is a standard card table (33" square). Each will hold any of the Hasbro maps with room to put cards and things. It takes all of the tables (I use C-clamps to hold them together so they don't shift apart) to hold two of the larger maps we seem to be getting in the Battlefields of Valhalla thread. These as Costco tables available at Wal-Mart and other stores. I think you can get an idea of them from this photo.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I'm going to shoot for a 3 foot by 3 foot and/or a 4 foot by 2 foot. With a couple of available tray tables on the side if needed it should be more than sufficient.
How does a $40 box set turn into a $400 - $500 spending binge? At least my Mom helped defray some of the costs (she wants to play, she's very "cool" for her mid 50s). She had to have the castle & forest sets, who am I to argue? So far I've been impressed with the helpfulness on this board. Hopefully I'll have more to contribute in the future. If you have a pool table it works wonders I fit a Mole hills map and the last battlefield from the Swarm of the Marro book.
