Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
Today for Tabletop Day I went to a FLGS and played:
Boss Monster Abyss Tesla vs Edison - really cool and thematic game with a lot of historical stuff going on. Mostly a stock market game, though the upcoming expansion that a couple friends are getting, will add more to the inventive side of things. Hand of fate is moving and the finger points to you ...Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man TUTORIAL FOR RE-BASING FIGURES 3hrs 43mins 32secs = 1242nd of 8808 overall - 1988 Honolulu Marathon Last edited by Hahma; May 1st, 2016 at 12:43 PM. |

We had a group day today & I played Revolution!, & Once Upon A Time: The Story Telling Card Game for the first time today. Older games that I hadn't come across before. Revolution! was really cool in mechanics but the winner beat by almost 100 points. He had played it before where as myself & the other player were noobs. Not that I'm sure I could've done too much different. Once Upon A Time was interesting & is open very much to interpretation. I had good cards for a good story line & an ending that could be tied nicely to any point in the story we wove. I just didn't have the opportunity to interrupt as non of my cards matched the story the others wanted to tell & I didn't get an actual interrupt card in my hand. Not a bad game though. We also played Cosmic Encounters, Monster Mansion & Pixel Glory. I took my twins & neighbour's kids with me today. They played Love Letter Adventure Time variant, KoT, Smallworld, Exploding Kittens & Ticket To Ride. A good day had by all. Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
King of Tokyo is the best dice game ever. I do like the power up expansion sometimes (it does make the game a little longer) and I do not like King of New York for the same reasons as A3n. Too much going on for what is supposed to be a quick dice game.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
I just played my first couple games of Zombicide: Black Plague. The mechanics of the game are fairly simple and straight forward. I had a blast playing it. I played it solo on the tutorial level. First time with two characters, second time with 3. First time I got murdered, and the second time was insanely fun.

I'd heard that King of New York was an improvement on The Dicetower. Seems like you guys disagree, though. So what are the major mechanical differences? What does New York do differently that you didn't like as much? C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
Over the week-end, I've gotten the opportunity to play a few games. So far, I've played two games of Seasons (my first time playing at the magician level), and then I played three games of Lanterns: The Harvest Festival with my wife and nine year-old daughter. My daughter picked it up very quickly and ended up winning two out of three games. This was our first time playing it, and I like it as a light, quick, gateway tile-laying game.
I also picked up a copy of FUSE, and I'm planning to get it to the table soon. Reading the rules, it reminds me of Escape: Curse of the temple, but it looks to be much faster to set up and play. |

I'd forgotten that the Magician level of Seasons was even a thing. How'd it play?

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
It went well. I like Seasons, and I love to draft, but I'm still relatively new to the game, despite owning it for several years. Magician level is just the next step up from beginner (apprentice). It uses the basic power cards, but drafting instead of set starting hands. I've only played a few times, but there has always been a gap between plays, so we always go back to apprentice level. This is all as opposed to archmage, which drafts from the entire card pool.

New York takes the Tokyo game and adds a bunch of stuff: different sections of New York you can hang out in, buildings to destroy, military that shoots at you. It all sounds really cool but this is what I don't like: First, it takes a while to setup all the buildings in each section. One of the great things about the Tokyo game is that it sets up so quickly. Also, instead of attacking each other, mostly the monsters just attack the buildings and the military. In fact, there's definite incentive for not being in the same section of New York that other monsters are in. Less attacking means more disinterest from me. What I like about Tokyo is the tension between attacking, healing, getting powers, and getting points. In New York, it seems lopsided toward getting points. I hope that helps you! |

As for the Power Up expansion, I'm still leaning towards at least trying it. But the nice part is that if I get Tokyo, that remains an option (and I can do it or not do it down the line) and if I buy it before trying it and don't like it, I can always take it back out. C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

KoT is one of those...anybody can play and have fun games. My son has played it with sleep over friends and with is Grand Pa and it was a blast on all fronts. Oh and BGG has some additional Monster that you can play with. the 50' woman is cool. A3n pointed me to that one I believe. Would I want it to be everything I love...sure...but that's just not realistic so I'm going to focus on finding things that will make me unhappy and work on fixing those. |
