Sertorius & Typhon2222's Customs — ABYSSAL IMPALER rev. 3/20
Sertorius and I have recently taken the plunge into custom units! So here they be: our collective efforts so far.
Let it be known that the creative work you'll find here is overwhelmingly his. Same with all the labor involved in making the cards. My contribution has been mostly limited to feedback and proofreading, and some photography (for the card pictures). Our aims:
We've also added notes in those cases when a figure's base needs to be trimmed/rebased in order to fit on a single or double hex. (Trimming is really easy: just get a good pair of shears, and use this template to guide your cutting. If rebasing, we recommend using our own Base Stickers pattern.) Otherwise, however, you can assume the figures will fit on a single hex as is, no modification required. We'd love any feedback! ______________________________________________________________________ The Trolls. A form of bonding modelled on that of the Wyrmlings allows them to act as a team (and extends to include the Feral Troll and Ice Troll Berserker). Their king, Lugnash Bonegnaw, employs his shield as a weapon, bashing enemies with it in order to reduce their defense. The Troll Skullcleaver prefers to focus his murderous energy on mowing through clumps of low-defense squads, while the Troll Slasher wields dual razored hands, allowing him to attack twice. The fast-moving Troll Hunter rounds out the war band; he can wield his sword in close combat if pressed, but is also quick with the bow when opponents threaten other Trolls. Along with the Feral Troll to make short work of wounded heroes, and the Ice Troll Berserker's sheer mobility, they can boast a troll for every role. Except tanking. That remains their great weak spot. They go down quickly if swarmed, and must rely on selective engagement and careful pacing if their regeneration is to keep them alive. LUGNASH BONEGNAW War Troll (D&D Legendary Evils) TROLL SKULLCLEAVER Skalmad the Troll King (D&D Dangerous Delves) TROLL SLASHER Bladerager Troll (D&D Dangerous Delves) TROLL HUNTER War Troll (D&D War Drums) ______________________________________________________________________ Khophawet, younger brother of Khosumet and battle leader of the Anubians. He doesn't replace his older sibling; he supplements him. His Relentless Assault Aura inspires his Anubians, while his Deferred Fury evens out their luck a bit: if they roll poorly for their Unleashed Fury, then Khophawet steps in to take a turn as well, picking up the slack and positioning himself to lend them his aura. KHOPHAWET Werewolf (Reaper Legendary Encounters) ______________________________________________________________________ Introducing the Predator faction. We've created a common squad (the Ticalla Centipedes) and a bunch of heroes to complement the Fyorlag Spiders/Wyvern/Sujoah. Mantises and Owlbears and Worms, oh my! Nature red in tooth and claw. Jungle fun for everyone. TICALLA CENTIPEDES Giant Centipede (D&D Dungeons of Dread) TICALLA MANTIS Fiendish Giant Praying Mantis (D&D Aberrations) OWLBEAR BRAWLER Owlbear Rager (D&D Blood War) / single hex if trimmed DEVOURER WORM Great Worm (Reaper Legendary Encounters) WYVERN WHELP Wyvern (D&D Dungeons of Dread) / single hex if trimmed ______________________________________________________________________ The Slaad hail from Limbo, an outer plane of existence, and are essentially physical manifestations of the swirling chaos of Limbo. BLACK SLAAD STALKER Black Slaad (D&D Savage Encounters) / single hex if trimmed GRAY SLAAD SORCERERS Gray Slaad (D&D Savage Encounters) BLUE SLAAD HUNTERS Chraal (D&D Angelfire) BLUE SLAAD RAVAGER Blue Slaad (D&D Giants of Legend) DESIGN NOTES:
Spoiler Alert!
Heed the arrival of the Knossian Minotaurs! Hailing from the sea-swept cliffs and shaded porticoes of Knossos, Crete, these half-men, half-bull warriors range from the refined and graceful Labryds to the ferocious, half-wild Brute. The smaller but powerfully-built Chargers, and Meinos, the mighty minotaur Lord of Knossos, round out the group. MEINOS Goristro (D&D Legendary Evils) / double hex if trimmed KNOSSIAN BRUTE Feral Minotaur (D&D Angelfire) KNOSSIAN LABRYDS Savage Minotaur (D&D Savage Encounters) / single hex if trimmed KNOSSIAN CHARGERS Minotaur Wrangler (D&D Lords of Madness) DESIGN NOTES:
Spoiler Alert!
Pens Sertorius: From yawning fissures on the plains of Valhalla issue a new species of Moltarn: the Magma Guards! Heat radiates from these shimmering monstrosities as they hurl flaming boulders and smash nearby enemies with their molten fists. The Obsidian Guards, a reclusive and often-ignored group, rejoice in their new Magma brethren and find new-found resolve. The Moltarn ranks find new direction with the arrival of Aestubelua (Latin, roughly "seething beast"), a fiery queen who can drive both Magma and Obsidian Guards to victory by turning land to molten lava at will. It is whispered that the arrival of these new Moltarns signals a coming volcanic cataclysm. Will Valhalla soon groan as volcanoes and sulfurous vents thrust their way into the once-serene landscapes? AESTUBELUA Magma Hurler (D&D War of the Dragon Queen) MAGMA GUARDS Rockfire Dreadnought (D&D Savage Encounters) / single hex if trimmed ______________________________________________________________________ Can you have too many Wyrmlings? We say no. COPPER WYRMLING Small Copper Dragon (D&D War of the Dragon Queen) GREEN WYRMLING Bronze Wyrmling (D&D Giants of Legend) DESIGN NOTES:
Spoiler Alert!
Larval Flayers, to bond with the Mind Flayer Mastermind and other Mind Flayer custom heroes. Now available for purchase online at Auggie's! LARVAL FLAYERS Darkmantle (D&D Night Below) DESIGN NOTES:
Spoiler Alert!
The March of the Ents! Three treant heroes and two bonding squads to accompany them. This army allows for great flexibility in drafting, and should offer lots of strategic options. ALDWOOD Treant (D&D Giants of Legend) / double hex if trimmed MURKWOOD Blackroot Treant (D&D Against the Giants) / double hex if trimmed GNARLED GROVETENDER (CHCG24 approved) Wizened Elder Watcher (D&D War of the Dragon Queen) STUMP WARRIORS Wood Woad (D&D Deathknell) SYLVAN STALKERS Black Woods Dryad (D&D Desert of Desolation) ______________________________________________________________________ The mushrooms! One of our kookier concepts. These reclusive and peaceful fungi rely on numbers and reproduction to survive. May prove difficult to fine-tune, but much fun will be had finding out. THE CIRCLE ELDER Deathcap (D&D Demonweb) MYCONID CIRCLE WARDENS Myconid Guard (D&D Aberrations) ______________________________________________________________________ Here come the goatmen! Hot to trot after their herd leader, these guys were developed as a thematic swarmish army especially suited for rough hilly terrain. HERD CHIEF BAABAS Champion of Baphomet (D&D Dungeons of Dread) / single hex if trimmed IBIXIAN RIDGE RAIDERS Ibixian (D&D Deathknell) DESIGN NOTES:
Spoiler Alert!
The Lakaien (German for "lackeys") were developed to fill some perceived gaps in the vampire family. Being a common squad, they provide much-needed manpower: now it's possible to form a complete and unified army around the Esenwein clan. They also reduce the vampires' order marker nightmares, and give Sonya, Iskra, and the Rechets more to do. LAKAIEN OF CLAN ESENWEIN Changeling Rogue (D&D Unhallowed) ______________________________________________________________________ Tired of the Greenscales and their generic bonding, we decided to give every one of the game's dragons a draconic humanoid common squad of his own, with thematically appropriate abilities. Here are our first four. BLACKSPAWN SLAYERS Blackspawn Exterminator (D&D War of the Dragon Queen) GREENSPAWN DEFENDERS Greenspawn Zealot (D&D Night Below) REDSPAWN FLAMECASTERS Redspawn Arcaniss (D&D Unhallowed) IMPERIAL DRAGONGUARDS Troglodyte Captain (D&D Underdark) ______________________________________________________________________ We wanted a partially-bonding army of Beholders, with all the numerous special powers and kookiness they bring. Since WotC recently released the Beholder Collector's Set, four of these five are now easily available. And you haven't lived until you've seen these awesome sculpts floating over a Heroscape map! Have fun with these iconic bad boys. XANTRIPH the Beholder Beholder Ultimate Tyrant (D&D Legendary Evils) / single hex if trimmed ORMATHULAK the Beholder Beholder Eye Tyrant (D&D Dangerous Delves / Beholder Collector's Set) / single hex if trimmed DROKALRAXA the Beholder Ghost Beholder (D&D Beholder Collector's Set) / single hex if trimmed GZEMIXILAK the Beholder Eye of Shadow (D&D Beholder Collector's Set) / single hex if trimmed IXINIPHONTH the Beholder Beholder Eye of Frost (D&D Beholder Collector's Set) / single hex if trimmed ______________________________________________________________________ The Zhentarim. The sculpts are unified by their distinctive armor and purple capes. We strove to make the uncommon heroes as integral to the package as the unique heroes and common squads. MANSHOON OF ZHENTIL Manshoon (D&D Lords of Madness) ORGAUTH OF ZHENTIL Zhent Cavalry (D&D Lords of Madness) / single hex if trimmed ZHENTARIM OFFICER Zhent Champion (D&D Lords of Madness) ZHENTARIM SOLDIERS Zhent Soldier (D&D Lords of Madness) ______________________________________________________________________ The first of a future faction, with ability to bond with iconic classic figures too, such as Sir Hawthorne. BLACKGUARD REAVERS Axe Soldier (D&D War Drums) ______________________________________________________________________ A thematic demonic hero who reverse-bonds with the Mezzodemon Warmongers. He echoes them in his spikes and copperish color scheme, and his chitonous regeneration. His Chthonic Impetus will also help other demon squads to come. ABYSSAL IMPALER Warbound Impaler (D&D War Drums) ______________________________________________________________________ Toss that lame Werewolf Lord back in the bag, and try these guys in concert! With one unique Bane to deal with heroes and a couple of common Dires for even more flexibility, these guys open up new strategic options for the poor Wolves of Badru. Both have specials which help keep the Wolves alive if their Pounces fail, but they only work against targets engaged with the heroes. The Bane Wolf is also two hexes: less flexible in moving, but the flip side is that he can more easily engage multiple enemies at a time. THE BANE WOLF OF BADRU Dire Wolf (D&D Dungeons of Dread) / double hex if trimmed DIRE WOLF OF BADRU (CHCG24 approved) Dire Wolf (D&D Giants of Legend) ______________________________________________________________________ The Reaper King and his skeleton army. The Reaper King has no offensive power of his own, but can control a wide variety of various skeleton units. THE REAPER KING Aspect of Nerull (D&D Deathknell) CRYPT REAPERS Skeletal Reaper (D&D Blood War) EQUICEPH BONECHARGERS Skeletal Equiceph (D&D Underdark) GNOLL SKULLCLEAVERS Gnoll Skeleton (D&D Aberrations) SKELETON ARCHERS Skeleton Archers (Reaper Legendary Encounters) SKELETON PIKEMEN Skeleton Spearmen (Reaper Legendary Encounters) SKELETON SLASHERS Skeleton Swordsmen (Reaper Legendary Encounters) Last edited by Typhon2222; March 20th, 2012 at 08:03 PM. Re: Sertorius and Typhon2222's Customs
Hmm, your abilities' wordings are a little vague, and without stats I'm going to have a really hard time testing them to see if your pricing is right.
Edit: Now my snarkiness doesn't make any sense. I guess I'll have to come up with something constructive to say. Last edited by Killometer; April 15th, 2011 at 11:43 PM. |

Killo, thanks for the feedback!

When would he use his normal attack? When engaged, and doesn't want to to kill himself with his own Fireball! But you're right, it should be a bit higher. Why/how is Reverse Bonding tricky? Quote:

Caught your responses right before I went to bed...

He looks like he could probably be 3/2 or 2/3 without changing his price (it's mostly wrapped up in his special abilities). Quote:

Re: Sertorius and Typhon2222's Customs
@Killometer
I don't know how to use the multi-reply thing yet, but: * All name issues fixed on the beholders now. * Reworded the Beholder Bonding to avoid the endless loop (pics to be updated soon). * About Manshoon - his special ability is rather strong I guess (cf Zelrig), and I imagined the purpose of Voice of Bane would be to get one more squad member lured into Fireball's range. For that reason I'd like to keep him squishy in the stats, as all archmages should be! I welcome the idea that raising him to 3/2 would not affect pricing that much, though. Hmm.. Should Fireball be Attack 3 instead? If I had my way I'd like it to be stronger than Heirloom's, at any rate (he IS the lord of the Zhentarim and friend of Beholders, after all). * About reverse bonding -- since the Zhentarim Soldiers and the Zhentarim Officers have no bonding abilities of their own, we are avoiding any accidental looping with Orgauth, right? Or am I reading that wrong. Bonding loops isn't something I ever really considered, I'm embarrassed to admit. Thanks for the critiques! |

Re: Sertorius and Typhon2222's Customs
Thanks to Killo's astute eye, we've corrected the following:
Xantriph the Beholder: clarified Beholder Bonding; corrected Field of Antimagic. Ormathulak: clarified Beholder Bonding; corrected Field of Antimagic. Drokalraxa: clarified Beholder Bonding. Gzemixilak: corrected Field of Antimagic. Ixiniphonth: corrected Field of Antimagic. Manshoon of Zhentil: reworded Voice of Bane. Abyssal Impaler: corrected "Cthonic" to "Chthonic". All relevant cards in first post have been updated accordingly. Last edited by Typhon2222; April 16th, 2011 at 03:34 PM. |

Re: Sertorius and Typhon2222's Customs
Added three new units. Would love your feedback. We want the Crypt Reapers and Equiceph Bonechargers to be roughly equal in power as well as price. Do you think they are?
The Reaper King and his skeleton army. Modeled on Kato Katsuro, the Reaper King can control a wide variety of various skeleton units. We are designing three Horde squads, three Thrall squads, and numerous Minion heroes with him in mind. Horde squads will have four figures in each, cost 40 points, and be very weak. Thrall squads will have three figures in each, cost 80 points, and be considerably stronger. Here's the King, with the first two of the Thralls. REAPER KING Uses the Aspect of Nerull from the D&D Miniatures line (Deathknell). CRYPT REAPERS Uses the Skeletal Reaper from the D&D Miniatures line (Blood War). EQUICEPH BONECHARGERS Uses the Skeletal Equiceph from the D&D Miniatures line (Underdark). Last edited by Typhon2222; April 22nd, 2011 at 11:16 AM. |

Re: Sertorius and Typhon2222's Customs
Added another unique hero.
We don't much like the Werewolf Lord, so decided to give the Wolves of Badru another bonding hero — one whose abilities actually relate to theirs. He opens up new strategic options for the Wolves of Badru. PACK LEADER OF BADRU Uses the Dire Wolf from the D&D Miniatures line (Dungeons of Dread).
