My TC-27 Entry... M.E.C.A. (Mobile Elevated Combat Arena)


Heres a 32 image tribute to my latest creation M.E.C.A. The Mobile Elevated Combat Arena for the Iron Golem.

MECA broke down into all 14 pieces, 4 gatlin barrels, 1 gatlin turret/batery pack, 6 legs, 2 clear ladders, and the main body.


Main Body Top part one.....

The arena platform is 19 hex's and has a large Vydar symbol that lights up. This portion of MECA was made with sculpty and an acrylic water kit. I simply photoshoped a Vydar symbol onto a 19 hex grid and printed it out in scale with the Heroscape tiles. I then placed a sheet of rolled out sculpty on a cookie sheet, placed my template over the clay and carefully cut out the pattern with an xacto knife, removed the excess clay and put the pan right into the oven. Once baked and cooled the piece was painted and drybrushed. To prevent the Acrylic water from bonding to anything not transparent, I taped renolds wrap down on one side of the Vydar symbol, flipped it over, placed it in a box on a level surface, arranged some geard and a wire coil just for kicks, and finally mixed and poured just enuff acrylic water to fill the opening of the piece and thinly coat the top of the sculpty portion as well. Any spill over the outside of the sculpty could be trimed off later.

Legs....

To make the legs I used a rolled out strip of sculpty and stamped it with a paint on laytex mold of the Bat-Wing's wing. The other portion of the leg's was a wooden yard-stick purchased for 50 cents at wal-mart, cut down into 5 inch segments. All six segments were then stacked and then taped into a bundle so I could drill three holes into them. Their texturing was achieved by gluing sand to them before they were painted and dry-brushed.

Main Body Top part two....

The rest of the main body was made by making a box out of foam-core. After placement of the lights and a few other random pieces for the inside the completed platform was glued downto the top of the box. Thus completing the top and inside of the main body.

Main Body Bottom...

The bottom of the main body was made by making a three tier Hex Pryamid of foam-core. The center dome portion of the bottom is actually the top of a rubbing alcohol bottle. I cut off the top of the bottle level then placed a piece of tape over it and flipped it over. From the inside I placed the battery pack reciever plug onto the tape and filled the inside with enuff hot glue to secure the reciever plug. Once the glue cooled, the tape was removed leaving a flat bottom with the reciever plug open. Next the central dome was placed over, centered, and outlined onto the hex pryamid. After that the circle outline was cut out of the pryamid. Texturing was the same as before, glue, sand, followed by paint. Finally the center dome was put into place and secured.

Glowing Drums...

The four glowing drums on the bottom were made by greasing the inside of a prescription pill bottle with cooking spray, and filling it with hot glue. Once cooled I drilled a screw into the dried glue and used a pair of pliers to help pull it out of the pill bottle. A little dishsoap to clean the cooking spray off and then on to the details. I glued a little round leftover model piece in the center divit and screwed three tiny screws into the top. Then I wraped a band of masking tape around the side. Carefully using a drill I bored a hole inside it from the bottom to place a LED light inside it. Finally paint, dry-brush, remove the tape, add power, and voilla.

Once the drums were made, I positioned and attached them. Once all the LED's were wired to the power-pak reciever plug the bottom was glued to the bottom of the platform box.


The battery pack came from a Zoids Model. I attached the gatlin guns from a Gundam Heavy Arms model to the sides of it.

I wanted HS units to be able to climb up to the battle platform, so I attached chains to the side of the platform and made transparent ladders out of plexiglass. Thus simulating a unit climbing the chain to the platform.



The ladders also support MECA and hold it up in the air without its legs at an elevation of 20 hex's.



















Sides....

With the top and bottom of main body finished the sides were detailed by first adding the leg joints. I used a segment of a cardboard tube with a pop bottle cap glued to each end and a slit in the side for the legs to plug into. After that I used my box of random parts from zoids/gundam models to fill in the gaps. Once satisfied a coat of paint to bring it all together.
