There have been other changes on the offensive coaching staff this year besides that one, and it may be that injuries - particularly to Ray Rice, who had an injury early in the season but supposedly was recovered - played a bigger role than we, as fans, were told. Certainly that happens. And we had injuries along the line, losing our LG (Kelechi Osemele, for those keeping score at home) for the season after he struggled with injury early on. Some local experts have opined that partly it was a problem of too many cooks in the kitchen, with more offensive assistants/coaches than most teams have. For instance, we had an OL coach, a running backs coach, and a run game coordinator. Too much, right? Sure looks like it to me. That, however, is also at least partly on the OC. Dok, you are correct that being a HC is different from being an OC, but I am mindful (as you pointed out) that as a HC, Caldwell's resume is not that impressive. Be that as it may, he seems like a decent guy, and I wish him & the Lions nothing but success. |

Re: Sports: NFL
As a Packers fan, I'm kind of relieved that the Lions weren't able to get Whisenhunt, considering his skill in developing quarterbacks. I think he might have been just what Stafford needed to make the jump. Who knows, Caldwell could be the answer, I just don't think that Caldwell is of the same caliber as Whisenhunt.
The other interesting coaching competition for me to watch as an NFC North fan has been the Vikings. There's been a lot of media speculation about Zimmer, at least among the Twin Cities media, but nothing concrete so far. |

Re: Sports: NFL
Yay! Championship Sunday is here!
Time for some picks. Niners at Hawks. Seahawks haven't looked to great offensively lately, not sure what that is all about. The Niners will shut down Lynch and force the Hawks to throw. San Fran seems to be playing real well right now and is the more balanced team. The Seahawks defense keeps it close, but not close enough. Niners 24-18 New England Brady's vs. Denver Manning's It's down right silly how much of this game is pumped as a showdown between Brady and Manning. It's almost as if there are no other players in the game. One ESPN column went so far as to say "what if" Brady had played for the Colts and Manning for the Pats... Broncos ride home field and emotion to an early lead, Pats respond and take the lead going into halftime. Pats will use a more balanced attack than in recent weeks which will keep the Broncos D guessing. The game goes back and forth in the 2nd half with the teams trading scores and leads. Manning gets the ball with around 5 minutes left and a chance to ice the game. On a critical 3rd down play he spots Welker. The ball is not perfectly thrown, but very catchable. Welker drops it and the Broncs are forced to punt with less than 2 minutes. Brady drives the Pats down the field for the winning score with Julian Edelman making 2 tough 3rd down catches. Re: Sports: NFL
They were my preseason Superbowl picks, so might as well stick with them here:

Re: Sports: NFL
Broncos win but don't cover the spread. (-4.5) The game will also be lower scoring than the odds say;(o/u 56-57) I take the under. Broncos 27 Pats 24
The hawks win and cover (-3.5) but more points than we expect;(o/u 40)I take the over. Seahawks 27 Niners 17 If I was making a 3 game parlay, I would take pats and the points, hawks to cover, and the over on the NFC game. Last edited by Rÿchean; January 19th, 2014 at 03:33 PM. Re: Sports: NFL
Well that was sad, but hey, I didn't even think they'd be in that position when the year started, so I'm not too depressed. Plus there is always next year when those young guys have another year under the patriots system.

Re: Sports: NFL
Ugghhh.
Ugly ending to the Pats season. Not much to say other than the Broncos were just better. They got the ideal situation with that game. At home and almost 60 degrees in January. They could not have asked for anything better. "A good teacher is like a candle: it consumes itself to light the way for others." -Anonymous |

Re: Sports: NFL
The Seattle defense feels like a worse matchup for the Broncos, but that 49ers offense absolutely terrifies me.

Re: Sports: NFL
Horrible possession call, Bowman clearly had it all the way. Plus, Bowman's hurt now.
