“We have the advantage,” Cyclops declared. “Now, we need to move to higher ground and finish this job once and for all! Let’s move!”

X-Men Turn 2a: Professor Mindlinks Angel

“Angel, take me up to that position in front of the ruin,” Professor X requested. “This will allow everyone else to advance, and I’ll be able to protect them with my Psychic Defense.”

“Yes, sir!”

X-Men Turn 2b: Professor X Mindlinks Jean Grey

Jean Grey follows Xavier and takes a position to his left. “Good, I can reach Mr. Fantastic from here.”

Telekinesis vs Mister Fantastic = 6+1 = fails

“It’s good to have a backup attack.”

Normal attack (4+1 dice) vs Mr. Fantastic (6 dice) = 3 skulls vs 2 shields = 1 wound.

FF Turn 2a: Mister Fantastic

“Great! I’m back in Jean’s Psionic Grip range.”

Jean Grey Psionic Grip vs Mr. Fantastic = 13+1 = holds

“She doesn’t have a grip on you,” Reed said to the Invisible Woman.

FF Turn 2b: Invisible Woman

“With Beast out of the way, I can protect us both with my Force Field!” The Invisible Woman positions herself in front of Mr. Fantastic. “I need to take out Jean Grey!”

Normal attack (4 dice) vs Jean Grey (5 dice) = 0 skulls

“You didn’t even need to use your Psychic Defense this time,” Jean said to Professor X.

X-Men Turn 3a: Professor X Mindlinks Jean Grey

“Since I only need clear sight and not a target to use Telekinesis, I can try to pull her over here.” Editor’s Note: I believe I’m interpreting this correctly.

Telekinesis vs Invisible Woman = 5+1 = 6 = fails

“Well, I can’t attack her, but I can still see Mr. Fantastic.”

Normal attack (4+1 dice) vs. Mr. Fantastic (5 dice) = 3 skulls vs 1 shield + 1 Force Field = 2 shields = 1 wound

“One more to go.”

X-Men Turn 3b: Professor X Mindlinks Cyclops

“I could move up to align myself for my Optic Blast, but I think it would be tactically better to remain here and try to finish off Mr. Fantastic.”

Normal attack (4 dice) vs Mr. Fantastic (6+1 dice) = 3 skulls vs 2 shields + 1 FF = 3 shields = 0 wounds.

Mr. Fantastic groaned from the damage he had taken. “Listen,” he finally said to the Invisible Woman, “I’m going to take a gamble and place two turns on me. I’ll give you the third turn in case I don’t make it.”

FF Turn 1a: Mr. Fantastic

“Well, here goes nothing…”

Jean Grey Psychic Grip vs Mr. Fantastic = 19+1 = holds Mr. Fantastic in place

“Go ahead. I’m too weak.”

FF Turn 1b: Invisible Woman

The Invisible Woman simply nodded solemly.

No Psychic Grip roll, since Invisible Woman will stay in place.

Normal attack (4 dice) vs Jean Grey (5 dice) = 4 skulls vs Professor blocks with Psychic Defense

“It’s useless!!!” The Invisible Woman was in tears.

“Don’t give up yet.” Mr. Fantastic said tenderly.

X-Men Turn 1a: Professor X Mindlinks Jean Grey

“I’ve got to pull those two apart.”

Telekinesis vs Jean Grey = 17+1 = works.
Damage = 19 = 1 wound

Jean flicks the Invisible Woman to the far left side of the battlefield. “Now I have a clear shot.”

Normal attack (4+1 dice) vs Mr. Fantastic (6 dice) = 3 skulls vs 2 shields = 1 wound = KO

“I love you!” were Mr. Fantastic’s final words.

X-Men Turn 1b: Professor X Mindlinks Cyclops

When Cyclops saw the love between Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, he was reminded of his love for Jean. He wondered if they would ever die together on the battlefield. But he regained his military discipline, and pushed for a final attack. He advanced up the road to place himself between Jean and the Invisible Woman, because his Optic Blast was his only effective weapon at range.

“I really hate to do this…”

Optic Blast (5 dice) vs Invisible Woman (5 dice) = 4 skulls vs 1 shield + 1 FF = 2 shields = 2 wounds = a final kiss goodbye

“General Sherman was right,” Cyclops sobbed to himself. Then he turned to Jean and started to say, “I love you,” but simply couldn’t.

Editor’s note for the curious: the leftmost glyph was the Glyph of Loot (HA!) and the rightmost was the Glyph of Smilex

Nobody said a word as the four remaining survivors headed towards the edge of the battlefield. Professor X finally broke the silence.

“Angel, when we get back, I’m going to talk to Mr. Helm personally and request his terms for our surrender.”

“What?” Angel asked incredulously. “We’ve beaten them twice already. We’ve shown we can take them on.”

“I didn’t say we were actually going to surrender. I just want to find out what his terms are. I want to know why; after C3G and Helmiverse have both been able to share Superman, Batman, and Robin; they’ve declared war on us over the Fantastic Four.

“Besides, are you certain, after all we’ve been through today, that we can continue to beat them?”

Angel frowned. “No. I don’t ever want to have to go through this again.”

“Exactly.”

“HA! HA!” a booming voice cackled from behind.

“What was that?” Angel asked. As he turned Professor X around to have a look, he heard Jean scream and Cyclops whisper, “Oh, no!”

“Everyone,” Professor X said as saw the source of the laughter, “I think we owe Mr. Helm an apology. We’ve both been set up.”

“HA! HA! HA! HA!”

I think we can all use a break at this point; so I'm pausing at this point to set up the next, and final phase, of this project. This has been part of the plan from the beginning.

The surviving members of the X-Men were herded down a long, winding path. Doctor Doom pushed Professor’s X along in his wheelchair, Angel and Cyclops wore metal leashes attached to chains held by the Silver Surfer, and Grimnak kept Jean Grey at a distance on her own leash, which was attached to the dinosaur’s collar. Jean couldn’t use her Telekinesis on Grimnak, and she could be chomped if she tried to escape.

Angel kept quiet, not wanting to draw attention to the fact that Doctor Doom didn’t clip his wings. Cyclops followed his military instincts and surveyed his surroundings. Grimnak periodically yanked Jean’s chain simply out of spite. Professor X sat glumly as Doctor Doom laughed from behind.

“I must say,” Doctor Doom began, “it was so much fun watching you customs kids romp around like that. The way you battle, you’d think you were one of us official figures.”

“What do you want from us?”

“As you’ve been able to prove yourselves worthy in battle, you will be my very own army. I’ll use you to take down Heroscape once and for all!”

“But you’re part of Heroscape as well. Isn’t that a bit self-defeating?”

“Are you that stupid? Oh sure, Hasbro gave us a Master Set, but they tossed in a smidgeon of ugly terrain. They put us in a tiny box with tons of unutilized space. They didn’t even see fit to assign us to any Valkyrie General!

“No wonder we were treated like crap. People didn’t want to buy us, and those who did simply didn’t consider us worthy enough to be used with the regular game. And while we were promised reinforcements, they never arrived! Ticalla Jungle came out after the transition to Wizards of the Coast. Even Aquilla’s Alliance. But they left the molds for our reinforcements lying in a corner to collect dust! The way we’ve been treated, it’s like being asked to sit at the kiddie table on Thanksgiving Day!”

“Then why harass the customs community? We’re no threat to you.”

Doctor Doom grimaced. “I really thought you were a smarter strategist than that. Ok, time for school – Rule #1: Never battle yourself if you can get others to do the job for you. That’s why I’m using you. Besides, if you fail me, who’s going to care? I’ll just grab another set. If I run out of those, I’ll head towards the Star Wars customs. Then the Star Trek customs. Then the Pokemon. I’ll toss every one of you worthless puppets after them until the entire line – both Heroscape and Customs -- is wiped off the face of the earth!

“But taking down Heroscape proper isn’t going to be enough. Despite disappearing from Wal-Mart and Toys R Us, the game is still getting developed. But even if that were to finally stop -- and it will -- then the Heroscapers.com community will follow the C3G example and keep the game alive. That is why I consider you my enemy and my biggest threat.

“So there’s a Rule #2: The best way to take down an enemy is to get them to fight amongst themselves. If I want to take down Heroscape, I can’t just take out the production channel. I have to take down the customs creation channel. So I’m also going to take down Heroscapers.com. If that website gets pulled and replaced by a Viagra ad, then there’s nowhere for Heroscape to go but to shrivel and die.

“That part of my plan has already been put into operation.”

“And what is that?” Professor X asked wearlily, tiring of this diatribe.

“Simple. I convinced Wizards of the Coast to shoehorn their own Dungeons and Dragons line into the game. That really got the Heroscapers’ community griping. And then, I followed it with my most devious scheme ever.”

Doctor Doom leaned forward and breathed into Professor X’s ear, “I was able to convince Wizards of the Coast to change the size of the bases!”

“That was you?” Cyclops asked angrily.

Doctor Doom laughed. “Brilliant, wasn’t it? Now there’s arguing, and some are even threatening to quit the game altogether.”

“So,” Professor X added, playing along, “then there’s really no need for you to send us into battle. Heroscapers.com will die, then the game, and there will be no more Heroscape. You win.”

“No, using you is about payback for the way we’ve been neglected. They will regret abandoning us.”

Jean Grey sensed a peculiar sensation in her mind that she experienced before in training. As Doctor Doom was getting angrier, his Mind Link was weakening. If she could just get him angrier, the Mind Link might be broken.

“Hey, Doctor!” Jean called.

“Shut up, woman! Shouldn’t you be barefoot in the kitchen getting me a beer?”

“I was just thinking – there is one thing that makes us customs superior to you!”

“Yeah? And what would that be?”

“We don’t have a Basic Stats Side!!!”

Doctor Doom flew into a rage, and shoved Professor X’s wheelchair away from him and down the pathway as he screamed. That broke the Mind Link, and Jean Grey immediately went into action. She may not be able to use her Telekinesis on Grimnak, but she can use it on that nearby boulder. With all the concentration she could muster, she locked onto the boulder, and sent it flying towards Grimnak; knocking him off his T-Rex. She then sent another boulder smashing onto the chain, setting her free. She ran towards Cyclops.

“Jean!” Cyclops exclaimed. The Silver Surfer tried to fire a Cosmic Blast, but Jean dodged the attack and used her Telekinesis to knock him backwards. She used her Telekinesis to hurl two more boulders crashing into the chains, setting Cyclops and Angel free, then used her Telekinesis to send the Silver Surfer tumbling off into the distance.

“YOU FOOLS!!!” Doctor Doom screamed.

Angel flew immediately to Professor X’s aid. “Are you all right?”

“Yes, I’ll be fine.”

“We need to get out of here.”

Cyclops and Jean ran up to meet Professor X and Angel. “I agree with Angel,” Cyclops said. “We need to get out of here and regroup.”

“That might be a bad idea,” Professor X reasoned. “Doctor Doom will also be able to regroup. We have a roughly even shot against them. We may never get this opportunity again.”

Cyclops immediately scanned his surroundings, looking for the most advantageous positions. “Funny, this place seems familiar to me.”

Professor X looked around. “You’re right, Cyclops. I know this place as well. Yes, this is the Trollsfords Swamps battleground from the Rise of the Valkyrie Master Set.”

“Yes, and that means we can rescue Sgt. Drake Alexander.”

“No,” Professor X replied, covering his mouth and nose with his handkerchief. “Look at the glyphs. This isn’t ‘A Desperate Recue Attempt.’ It’s…”

Cyclops completed the sentence, “’A TOXIC MIST!’ We’ve got to move NOW!”

Toxic Mist: At the end of every round, the deadly gas is one level higher. The gas cannot rise above level 5. At the end of each round, all figures in the gas take 1 wound.
