They've been using Heroscape tiles as bases for at least a year now.

They are also smaller and incompatible with Heroscape, too.

I just got my email from Marvel and came to post my observation that Ultron is standing on Heroscape tiles, but Balantai beat me to the punch. Curses! Scooped again!

@ MS - What do you mean that they've been using HS tiles for a year but they are smaller than HS? So you mean they are not actually HS tiles?

They have been using them for a while now. Someone else posted a thread about it a year ago.

They are just like the HS tiles except that they are smaller and have pegs on top so the figures can stand on it.

They shrank them by a 5% or so, just enough to keep them from working with existing HS stuff.

Yeah, it makes no sense at all to do so but that is what they did. The cost savings on a 5% reduction of plastic for the figures base would have easily been eclipsed by Heroscape fans who decided getting the cool 3 hex tile was enough of a bonus to splurge on the huge figure they may have otherwise gone without. The Iron Man one in particular would have been a nice figure to pick up as you could use him as a Sentinel or Master Mold figure.

Or they wanted the spacing to more closely match the distance between their characters' feet...

Since the hexes were unusable, I never convinced myself to buy any of them, so I really don't know how well the figures stand of them. Pretty sure you could put the foot pegs wherever needed to make it work for the different figure stances on a 5% bigger base though.

Oh, and that is an interesting find T-spinny. Looks like what came out of the ring in the movie, just not sure what it is suppose to be.

The distance between the pegs isn't appreciable. It had to be intentional, though whether they did it to prevent us from using them, or they needed to distinguish the different products, is unknown. I think the latter is more probable.
