Getting the correct balance of strategy and luck is one of the keys to deliver a fun playing experience. In shifting realms, we use the story cards to add surprise and an element of luck of the draw. There is also luck in which task cards you receive.

The combat is easy. You sacrifice a soldier to remove an opponent's soldier. Simplifying the combat allows you to plan more about which actions to use and how to use them.

We wanted our first game to be mostly strategy, with a touch of luck.

It is a fun exercise to rate games 0-10 in both luck and strategy. For example, Chess would be a 10 for strategy and 0 for luck. When you design a game, knowing where you want your ratings to land is important. Also, knowing exactly which elements create luck can help you too, if you want to increase or decrease the amount of luck.
What would you rate Shifting Realms and is that the rating you were shooting for this time?
Bonus question:
What would you rate Heroscape?

Thank you.

Really. Thank you.
You have created something really special.

I was just on kickstarter wanting to watch the new game play video and noticed that the video on there wouldn't work on my computer almost as if the link was gone. Just giving you a heads up craig. PS: I'll be backing too, just have to wait for my wife not to notice me throwing more money at kickstarter

Shifting Realms is a 9 for strategy and a 1 for luck. It is the rating we were shooting for. Early designs had more luck, we slowly took the luck away.
Heroscape, 7 for strategy and a 3 for luck. Games with more luck can have swings of power. One bad roll where you really needed to take out a wounded hero or losing the initiative roll...

Great! The game looks good, Craig. I think getting some promotional videos up there will help. KS does love minis, if you can find a way to get a few in the box, too.

Best of luck to you and your brother, next time.

I wrote a lengthy post in the category of wanting to help you guys on your kickstarter page, but Dad scaper has some golden stuff here. The guys on kickstarter do love their minis and are willing to pay the extra coin for them. Glad to see you guys coming back in June.

Re: Shifting Realms by Craig & Jeff Van Ness

I'd really like to see some work go into the graphic design. The card layouts look really dated to me, even though the artwork itself is good.

Remember, people can't actually experience the game itself with a Kickstarter, so visuals mean a lot. This is the same reason people keep mentioning minis, but the reality is that a graphic design overhaul would make this game LOOK worlds better at a fraction of the cost of minis production.

Looking for a way to get casual players involved in Heroscape? Do your opponents lack the interest or knowledge to build/draft their own armies? If so, check out Project 500!

If you did both it would be huge. People would get much more excited about it and start throwing money. Also, Stretch goals are big with people too, it gets them excited, gets them talking, gets them telling other people.

Re: Shifting Realms by Craig & Jeff Van Ness

I am sad that this did not get funded, but I will pledge again in June. I have a lot of great memories of playing Epic Duels, Risk 2210, and expecially Heroscape and can't wait to get my hands on the next board game from the genius Craig Van Ness. Best of luck to Shifting Realms and whatever else you release in the future.
