Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

My buddy Brian came over last night to try the intro game of Star Wars Legion. He has all the same stuff I do, and more, but hasn't had the time to even assemble it yet, but that will come in time. But in the meantime, I have enough to play the intro vanilla learning game and will get back to painting more after 2 more Infinity models are done.

Another fun little intro learning game of Star Wars Legion. I played the Empire this time. Vader waltzed forward, taking some damage but deflecting some back at some Rebels as well. He engaged Luke in the obligatory confrontation and nearly took him out, as Luke had been already wounded by the passing speeder bikes. Luke hit back to get Vader his 7th of 8 wounds.

Based on the command cards played in this shortened 4 round game, the Empire was going to have initiative next round. So Brian had the lone survivor (the leader) of his forward squad, move and backstab Vader.

It will be nice to play the full size game of 800 points each, and on the full 6x3 table with a good bit of terrain and the full rules. This intro game only scratches the surface.

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

A guy I've gamed with a couple times in Chicago, and who turned me on to The Walking Dead All Out War, was kind enough to offer me some of his old Star Wars models/toys for me to use in Star Wars Legion. They aren't the exact scale, a little bit smaller (curse you FFG for making Legion 35mm scale ), but the Tie Fighter was broken anyway, so the intent is to make these terrain pieces for Legion.

I actually picked up these things from my buddy Chris today at lunch, as he sees Josh in Chicago more than me and was the middle man for this transaction. I had also went in on that big terrain order over the weekend with Chris, where I got the Warsenal Comanche starter set and other stuff. So I also picked that up along with the Star Wars stuff. When looking through the box, there is a set of 3 big acrylic templates that I ordered, and they packaged them with a nice piece of MDF in between 2 of the templates and the 3rd. It's about 4x8 inches (roughly) and will make a perfect base to build upon for the crashed Tie Fighter. I might add a thin layer of pink foamboard that I will carve out for the cockpit and bottom of the wing to sink into a little bit, and then texture, and some grass and foliage.

For the broken off Wing, I'm thinking about having it laying on an angle on a foamboard rock formation. I want it to be at a low enough angle so that it can be walked up on from the lower end and the figures can sit on it to fight.

For the pod, I'll similarly carve out a piece of foamboard to have the pod sunk into. I'll weather the pod up and call it a day.

The Landspeeder will likely just stay as is and can be placed anywhere to just add as an obstacle.

Any of those could also be used as locations to put objective markers that troops have to try to gain control of.

The Dewbacks are kind of an odd thing to try to incorporate, but maybe build a corral of sorts to have them just hanging out in there during a battle that goes on around them.

The same guy (Josh) that game me the other stuff.

I have seen all the Star Wars movies except for Solo (so far), but am not a fanboy so to speak. I never read the comics or books, and I never watched any animated series' or played any of the video games. So I didn't know what the Dewbacks were, until Josh told me. I'm sure I had seen them if they were in a movie, but it was so long ago, that I completely forgot or wasn't paying that much attention.

My friend Brian, that played the intro vanilla game of Legion with me on Tuesday night, explained a some of the history of how the Empire wasn't bad in the beginning and then they went bad etc.

I'm learning more as I go The main reason I got into this game system, is for one, I didn't have one like this one with mass battles and large vehicles and such. Though Halo Ground Command is similar in that regard, it's at a much smaller miniature scale. Also, I know that a Star Wars themed miniatures game like this will get played more among the people in my group, than some other games that don't have the SW popularity.

So now I only have a few more Infinity models to paint for the immediate future, with one of them being almost done, and then I can get back to painting my Legion stuff. Want to get the Fleet Troopers and Snowtroopers painted over the next couple weeks before my group's next all day, as that's when I plan to bring it back there and hopefully have a bigger game. Maybe not the full 800 points, but maybe 600 and some real terrain besides the barricades.

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Had a pretty productive evening last night and morning today.

Last night, I had finished my Nomad Grenzer for Infinity, though varnished it this morning. I had been working on it off and on during the week and am glad to wrap him up and move on to the next one. Speaking of which, this morning I was able to get a decent start on my Nomad Reverend Healer. She's pretty badass for game purposes and a neat model. Still have a bit of work to do, but I'm happy with the start I got.

Last night, I started messing with the escape pod that Josh gave me. I filled in the deep holes where screws were in for assembly, and built up around it with greenstuff to give it the look of an impact. I also glued on some sand. This morning I was able to prime it, along with the 2nd set of barricades for Legion.

The 3 screw holes aren't perfectly smooth on the surface (used greenstuff and tried to get it as smooth as I could), but no big deal, as I'll weather it a bit to help blend in.

Those look great. That gunner is so cool. The lady looks like she came out of assassins creed universe. I love it. Your pod is going to look fantastic.

Thanks Trex!

Here's the fluff about the Reverend Healer (Assassins Creed woman )

"Don’t let the name fool you, their full title is Reverend Healer-Killer. The true purpose of these women is to heal the Sphere of the Evil within by extirpating it altogether. The Observance see it as their duty as representatives of Our Lady of Mercy to create a corps of adepts trained in field medicine to help those innocents caught in the crossfire of the battle against the great Evil that is ALEPH. But, in accordance with the hiketeia, the honor code that binds Reverends to each other—even beyond death—and to those under their aegis through a blood debt, none may disregard the sacred call to arms against the enemy of Humanity. The title of Reverend is only bestowed upon dyed-in-the-wool warriors, fighters whose commitment to the cause can only be compared to their ruthlessness. According to the twisted, fanatical worldview of the Observance, its Healers are not called upon to be a symbol of life, but of cleansing death. Their task is not only to keep their Reverend sisters alive for the fray, but to join them in the fight. Healers are expected to be the surgeon wherever the malignant tumor is found, to be the scalpel to the Moira’s sword. For this reason, the menders of the Observance are trained as assault commandos and specialized assassins. Set upon the battlefield, they are not a welcome sight to anyone: they conduct themselves with a cruel, blunt precision even their allies find terrifying. The uncanny, psychopathic detachment in their actions stands in stark contrast with the name of these so-called Reverend Healers."

The Grenzer fluff:

Grenzers, Grenz Security Team

"Named in deference to the old Krajisnici, or Granicari, Croation mercenaries who fought for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Grenz Security Team specializes in completing objectives beyond the capabilities of conventional security forces. Super-spies and elite miscreants, in other words. They are not exactly policemen, but a special corps that act as a kind of border patrol. Like the Grenzers of yore, they are hunters with a free rein to act and whose authority is never questioned. They are given carte blanche because they get the job done. The D Unit, the Rashomon Sting, the Stronach Incident, the Szabo Agent, the Sigil Job...Ever heard of them? Of course you haven't. No one has, because those events never took place. Each one was a crisis averted by this team. Because the Grenzers do their job well: they keep Tunguska safe."

Got a little work on the pod just a bit ago. Lightened it up, added some color here and there, base coated the crater and surrounding dirt, and did a wash over the whole pod. Tomorrow I'll work on the Reverend Healer more and likely finish up the pod.

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Had some free time last night and didn't feel like working on such a detailed model as the Nomad Reverend Healer for Infinity, so I messed around with the Star Wars pod terrain piece, as it was pretty much ready to go after building up the base with greenstuff and sand texture Friday night and priming it yesterday morning.

The scale is a little smallish, but I think it's great, and I'm not one that gets all bent out of shape if terrain pieces aren't perfectly to scale. Heck, the deserty buildings I got at Adepticon are more for 28mm than 35mm, and so are some MDF kits I've recently purchased. I try to make as much use of terrain as I can with different systems, as it saves money and time.
