Vampire Assualt - map and scenario

After five long years, our world continues to crumble under the weight of unrelenting warfare. Utgar, the evil Valkyrie General, has summoned every sort of dark and vile creature to aid in his single-minded pursuit of power. Though we dare no speak it, few among us doubt it: Utgar is winning this war.

Unexpected news reached us from our spy deep in the Utgar forces. Sudema, who has befriended the Esenweins and gained what the creatures of Utgar can call trust, brought us a tale of betrayal and in-fighting amongst the Utgar forces.

Cyprien had struck a deal with a Hive Lord of the Marro, Su-Bak-Na we believe, to allow a hive to be installed in the infested swamps outlying his manor house. A new player, another hive lord with apparently more clout than Su-Bak, has arrived and rejected the agreement. It appears this new hive lord does not want to share this new ground with the like of the vampires.

The battle is immanent. Our hope is Sudema makes it out alive..uh..you know. Either way, Utgar will feel the blow and perhaps give us a chance to move on the offensive.

The Map:
My original inspiration for this map was the raised graveyard. I saw a similar model on the boards and as soon as I find it again, I'll make an edit crediting the original. My son really wanted to use our new swamp and that's how I came up wit the Utgar vs. Utgar idea.

The map is definitely not a castle defense game. The castle is mostle there because it looks cool. Plus, with the pieces we have, the undead on the board have no ranged attacks! (not counting Sudema of course).

The Marro obviously start in the swamp. They initially have access to the tunnel behind the graveyard but the vampires must have forgotten about it ages ago. The vamps and shades start in the castle and the zombies in the grave yard.

Our Marro forces way out number our undead, but with all those squads to eat, the vamps may just pull this one out. I'll let you know after we play. It's possible we may add a victory condition that Cyprien wins if he lives and kills the hive and the hive lords.

I must ask is the terain on the grave yard from marvel legends or is it painted? Awesome map.

Blackrock is surprisingly tart
A truly exquisite map! If you can give us build plans or something, that'd be cool Is each group its own army? Seems like Sudema and her zombies are at a disadvantage, unless they have a different objective for winning.

Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate that we get a chance to share our maps like this. When I finish the build design I’m going to upload it under the name “Betrayal!”

The graveyard is using the tiles from the Marvel set. The board is laid out on a 4X6 table.

EDIT: The map used 4 MS, 1 SoTM, 2 Castles, 4 Roads and pieces from 2 lava, 1 TT and various expansions for height.

I’ve got two players available almost all the time (me and my son) so this was designed for two armies: Marro vs Undead. 2 or 4 players would work but still it should be two teams. We’ve been able to play a few rounds but the game got interrupted a couple of times plus my son realized he wasn’t playing the Marro to their full potential so he suggested we start again later.

Basically what happened was he started marching both the hive lords towards the castle. I left the vamps alone and started moving the zombies up on the graveyard road. After the hive lords were closer to the castle and out of the way, the zombies went over the wall and started wading through the marro squadies towards the hive (there are a few spots where the water tiles can cushion the fall – slow, but hey, they’re zombies). This is where my son kinda blew it. I don’t think he realized what 4 squads of renewable zombies meant and he tried to use Su-Bak-Na to counter them. I’m thinking played correctly the stingers should have been more than enough.

I also noticed that the undead army can really use its speed to balance out the point differential. Just like in the game above, let the marros go after that tasty castle and as soon as the big hitters get close, fly out over the water to get at the much weaker squads.

A 4 player game could add another cool element: the double cross. Some number of turns in (10+), if Sudema is still alive, that player could call in an allied strike. Maybe the airborne elite or some ninjas coming in behind the hive for an assassination attempt.
