1984 and Ender's Game are both such good books.

I don't read much, but when I do, I prefer these types of books. Not too complicated for a 13 year old, but very interesting. Quote:

Finished The Gathering Storm. Very good book. Now I'm finally getting around to reading The Name of the Wind. No opinion yet, but I've heard that it starts slow.

Re: Books: What are you currently reading?
I'm reading (or rather, listening to a reading of) Jerusalem's Lot, the short story on which the movie 'Salem's Lot was based.
It's written from the perspective of a series of letters and diary entries, which is a style I really enjoy. It's almost Lovecraftian in the way of ancient evil, secret cults, and cursed lineage. EDIT: Turns out I was more on point than I knew... The climax of the story involves the attempt of a beast to punch through into our world accompanied by chants of "Yog-Soggoth!" Good times. But I'm amazed at the difference between the short story and the movie. There's almost no connection whatsoever except a cursury reference to nosferatu. Re: Books: What are you currently reading?
Ugh. Avoid The Somnambulist by Jonahan Barnes. The freak show aspect is mildly interesting, but the character motivations are nonexistant and the characters themselves are murky and unclear. The storytelling is uneven and goes from taking itself seriously to dealing with serious things in comic-bizarre fashion (the Deus Ex Machina conclusion actually refers to itself as Deus Ex Machina).
~Aldin, who notes that it is readable - but at least partly because you're looking for the satisfying conclusion that pulls it all together - a conclusion that never happens He either fears his fate too much or his desserts are small That dares not put it to the touch to gain or lose it all ~James Graham |
