I've noticed a "harsh edge" to some posts since day one, and recently found myself leaning that way with all the new members. My linking and helpfulness is just an attempt to take that edge away, as well as contribute more meaningfully to the community, since I'll often go on a comedy spree.

Good post, Hedge Knight.
I know that I post perhaps more than my share of humorous (to me) or light comments; but I seriously try not to post them in inappropriate places. For example, I don't think I've ever posted a joke in one of the Book threads. If discussions are going along, I try to contribute at the level they are maintaining. When they get silly, well, I'll probably get silly too. |

If a user isn't going to bother reading an FAQ, why would they bother reading a thread called "Questions N00bs Ask"?
In my experience, an online community is always going to have its share of new and/or casual users that are not consistently contributing to the community. That's just how the internet works - especially in a forum situation. Users who have been there a while and have gotten comfortable with the way things are have two choices. They can either lash out at the new users and drive away them away and eventually dwindle and die out, or they can tolerate and embrace new users (even if it means repeating yourself) and maybe instill in them the desire to start contributing themselves. |

I've seen it happen plenty of times here--helpful links and corrective input from established members "redeeming" a new member whose initial flurry of posts were meaningless and annoying. And I'm confident that is what will continue to happen, along with the occasional thread of old-timers griping about having to do it. Cav, Nether, Aldin, Rev, and Necroblade are out in front in helping the community grow into a fun, open, quality place. Thanks to you, especially, and thanks too to everyone else who takes the time to patiently teach newer members how we do things here. |

Apparently a bit of impatience crept into my response to Barbell Man recently, but I've apologized outside the forum for my part in the misunderstanding and hope he sticks around as I think he'll be a great contributor to the site.
