The ban hammer only works if the IP is linked with an active account. There is no way for us to tell if this person is a member or not. It may be possible to keep this particular IP from accessing the site but if buddy resets his IP, he is free to access the site again.

I think that the offenders ISP is the only one who can pursue this issue.

Remember, it would horrible and almost criminal to sell this address to spammers, use it to sign up for something embarrassing and/or questionable, hack it, or commit any other cruel pranks using it.

So, do not do so under any circumstance.

It's not "softlayer"s fault. They're just a server company. Someone is either using one as a proxy or client and attempting to hack you through it. (Unsuccessfully)

Exactly. When I look back on that comment, it looks like I am encouraging those things, but I actually posted it because I've seen that happen on other websites.
